The Universal Remote is a Primary Slot Shotgun, allowing you to equip a Shotty WITH a Sniper Rifle for maximum killing power up close or at long range. The biggest feature of this weapon is that it actually has a higher "Max Effective Range" for its shots, meaning you will kill opponents at a further distance than you would any other shotgun. I have personally done this myself in which opponents who tried charging me would try to one-hit me, only to be taken down instead as I could kill them at a farther range. In a sense, the Universal Remote is an Anti-Shotty Shotgun.
