All I hear from players is how OP Thorn is and how big of a nerf it needs. I agree, but disagree as well. I hate Thorn, and am angered when killed by it. It needs lower range, maybe less impact or a slower ROF, and the DOT damage needs either less damage, ticks, or the inability to kill, just weaken. However, Nerfing Thorn is not the solution.
Some say we don't need to nerf Thorn, but buff everything else to compete with it. This isn't the solution either because this will cause Destiny to become a short Time to Kill game, as opposed to the long TTK model it is trying to establish. This model is tarnished with shortcut weapons and their perks. That, fellow guardians, is where our problems lie.
Bungie screwed up PVP in Destiny. Most of the time it isn't enjoyable for many, and when playing with others, all I hear is how annoyed they are with the various methods of being killed. Not because we suck we prevail quite well on average. It's because we all feel that the person who killed us did not earn their kills, but rather used the most exploitative design elements in the game. I also see YouTubers making content against the Crucible and what's wrong with it, sometimes even quitting PVP all together. So, why does Crucible suck so much for so many individuals? Because it's unbalanced.
The Crucible is a game type with 4 major issues.
1. The servers cause massive lag, booting, and delayed respawns. All of which hinder the flow of play.
2. The weapons are unbalanced. Some namely, like Thorn, TLW, and others, but more so as a whole. In a long TTK game, shotguns,, should either not be one hit kills, have horrible accuracy,, and have severely restricted range. No primary weapon should kill in 2 shots, no matter how difficult it is to accomplish. Each weapon class should have strengths and weaknesses, but all be on the same playing field. You should have the freedom to choose a weapon that suits your play style, but still has it's own limitations and strengths. This is nonexistent. Weapons are all over the place due to stats and perks that cheat their way through the weapon class' design.
3. The maps are unbalanced and need more symmetry or less vantage points on one side.
4. The classes and mechanics are unbalanced. Blinking and sliding to avoid being in a player's line of sight to 1 hit kill them, one super having more range and less risk than another, one melee reaching farther, but still doing the same amount of damage as another, and magnetized grenades and one hit kill grenade scenarios, are just a few ways some classes are handicapped, leaving the victim unable to counter the attacker.
These are the issues. We need to fix more than just one weapon. Fixing Thorn only creates a new gun to hate for being OP.. The Crucible is entirely unbalanced. If we want to enjoy it, it needs to be tuned, nerfed, buffed, whatever you want to call it, entirely. I feel like the developers just say "this would be a cool gun/super/ability" and throw it in the game throwing balance to the wind. Just cool looking crap everywhere. Meanwhile, gameplay suffers. If we want to enjoy and commend the Crucible for being an exemplary model of how FPS PVP should be, Bungie needs to reinvent and re-tune it completely to make it actually balanced. Simple as that.
TLDR; Thorn isn't the thing that is ruining PVP. The Crucible in its entirety is so heavily flawed and unbalanced, that it needs to be remade as a whole.

Thorn needs less range, and the dot shouldn't be able to kill you; keep you on low health-Yes. Kill you-No. It Would still be good, but not op like it obviously is.

Although I agree with your post...You have to realize that Bungie DID NOT create this game with the hardcore competitive FPS community in mind. They created the Crucible to have fun. The main focal point in Destiny is PVE not PVP. (Prime example of why we don't have Private match options) This isn't COD where the only thing they really care about is the PVP experience; every single weapon, armor, and super have to be balanced in PVE and PVP. The only way that Crucible would be truly balanced is if outside the classes it was a level playing field. Instead of having the freedom of using every weapon / armor in the game there should be a entire other class of gear that you ONLY used in Crucible. Bungie is not going to "Reinvent and re-tune" Crucible. The only way to truly achieve balance would be to separate PVE and PVP all together. Then when Iron Banner comes around you could use what ever weapons and armor you wanted, and power would really matter and make the event even more special....but broken. Again. I feel that Bungie did not create Crucible with competitive players in mind, They wanted everyone to feel like an overpowered bad ass. If you don't take Crucible so serious and try to have fun it really becomes a blast to play.

Edited by Vilhelmus II: 7/11/2015 8:57:10 PMGo back to pre buff, no one used it back then, reload was terribly slow, it had high recoil, and only carried 6 rounds. I was the only one using it back then.
Well not really, but it was considered one of the worst exotics.
-
By buffing all weapons to compete with it lowers the skill level. It simply becomes a first to shot first to win game, no skilled envolved.
-
I'm garbage in PvP but with Thorn I have a fighting chance. I'm sure I could play more and improve, yes I know "Git Gud Skrub". I started playing to get enough marks for Deadshot Luna and once I do I'll just carry my butt back to PvE lol.
-
Cut its effective range in half and its fixed
-
Yeah no variety makes pvp absolutely bland
-
Good post man. I agree but I wouldn't mind if bungie destroyed thorn completely I hate that nooby gun
-
A guy with thorn out gunned my machine gun by hiding and popping out of cover and two shotting me in the head... If that's not the DEFINITIONS of OP, than idk what is. At this point I don't even care if they nerf the damn thing to oblivion or even remove it from the game because I'm tired of that damn gun.
-
Agreed
-
I hope nothing happens to thorn but if something's i say give it less range
-
-
I hope bungie does none of the things you suggested. Cause then destiny will be bland and boring.

Edited by ChronoSIayer: 7/1/2015 3:50:29 PMWell man you don't know much i guess..if you buff anything else.. knowing that handcannons have highest impact..What do you want then? -Ar with 30magazine that kills with 3 headshots (10 possible kills/magazine) -pulse rifle one shot -scout rifles 2 head shots death machines Just talking about primaries..with an impact buff if tou get heavy with g'horn just jump and shot in middle of the map..you will kill all the opponent team. -I get along with points 1/2/3..fully disprect point 4;classes are fine since day one, they don't need any change, good balance IMHO. As now it needs a nerf..it's umbalanced. But mostly fix thorn's glitch and last round snipers ;) Thoughts of a TLW pvp wielder since november (when i got it i felt in love with it way before HC buff)
-
It's OP
-
this actually makes sense
-
OP was not a fgt today bump
-
All weapons shouldn't be on the same playing field. A sidearm shouldn't cause the same amount of damage as an assault rifle. You say shotguns should have severely restricted range, so you obviously don't know how far they can actually kill someone from
-
Thorn isn't the problem in PvP. I am.
-
Destiny , seemes to be striking towards faster pvp games now . If you go up against a TLW . It feels like a cod fight! It shouldnt!!! ? Ttk , time to kill is insane for a game we have shields and armor for . Inscrease shield or health could fix the op gun problem . Just a thought
-
Edited by Erijian: 7/1/2015 11:18:03 PMDestiny PvP should be somewhat like Halo's. Start by increasing how much Health everyone has in the Crucible, increase Super/Grenade/Melee damage in compensation for the HP boost, and balance from there.
-
They need to take the perks off all guns goin into pvp.
-
I can agree with this 100%
-
Yep, I agree with the one hit kills on a game which does indeed seem to want long ttk.
