The Confederate Flag

I honestly don't see a reason to make a big fuss over keeping a flag. Of course, it is the CONFEDERATE flag, mainly used during the civil war, so flying that flag over 150 years later could anger people. And of course, some hate groups have adopted it, so that ruins it for the majority of people that aren't in hate groups. But I recommend tapping the link to an article where Charlie Daniels gives his opinion. He brings up some good points.
I'm a "Yankee" btw. And Charlie Daniels is a famous country musician
• Okay... I'm going to say something but I'm not taking a side in this argument... The civil war was not about slavery. It was about the conflict between the federal governments laws interfering with the laws of the states. Slavery is just what the schools focus on when you're young to convince you that the south was bad and to give you a scapegoat. With that being said though, I understand how it has taken on a meaning of something less than southern pride, you know? My opinion on this? It's not my problem.

    • What bothers me is 90% of people have zero clue what the confederate flag looks like. There are three confederate flags and the one that the "Cowboys" represent is linked to racist deeds. I do not discriminate what people think is "heritage" but I feel that people are standing up for the wrong flag if they feel they want to represent the confederate.

    • It should stay its part of our history and flying it is freedom of speech. While I understand lots of people are offended by it, it's the flag owners right to fly it as much as it's the persons right to be offended. Here's how freedom of speech works and how it should work. You have the right to say whatever you want, but you also have the right to be held accountable for what you said and how it affects people.

    • Fighting over the flag doesn't solve the racism problem.

    • Hearing about the debate of the flag always makes me think of that one South Park episode with a similar issue. Granted, that flag did come with images of black people being hanged by a white man, but the arguments from both sides sounded pretty much the same as the ones we have in real life. Anyone else notice this?

    • The confederate flag simply represents the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives due to the south's racism and bigotry. I have no problem if you want to use it; as long as you know you'll be recognized as a white supremacist.

    • There isn't really a difference between the confederate flag and the n azi flag. You can say "the flag doesn't represent racism, it had economic strife, political problems, and it represents my heritage." And these points are true. Both movements had these details within them. But both groups are dead. The flag now is remembered by the worst deeds done by both groups. The confederacy is dead, just get rid of the flag.

      • it needs to go, into a museum display. People still need to learn about it so it shouldn't be destroyed and I have no problem with people having it on their own property but I don't think the confederate flag belongs on statehouse grounds to me that sends a mixed message. My point is that in my opinion a museum is the best place for the confederate flag to go

      • Read more on it. Flag was basically abandoned after the civil war until in 1948 Strom Thurmand and his crew used it as their symbol in the fight against civil rights. Other southern states such as Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama also began to use the flag for that sole reason

Freedom of speech is one, but yeah I do find it really offensive honestly The war was fought for more reasons then slavery, however because of our school system it is seen as a symbol of slavery albeit if it is or isnt, that being said it csn easily be seen as offensive to many

        • Look, to some, the CSA battle flag represents slavery, and oppression. To others, it represents states rights and their heritage. I'm from Texas, and when I see people with their Confederate battle flag on stuff, I don't really care. The problem, is that SCs sate capital flies one. People are getting way to angry about this

        • Those that believe the primary goal of the union during the civil war was to abolish slavery are mistaken, it was a side goal to the main which was preserving the union at all costs. http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/greeley.htm

        • As a black person; its a no brainer why it should go, but some people look at it as souther pride and history. I can see how its removal can be harmful.

        • Honestly i don't care if the flag stays up or not. i think the flag shows both the ideals of the south that should be commended like the fact that those people were willing to fight for their beliefs, but it also represent the darker aspect of southern history primarily slavery, and racism. part of the war had to do with slavery, but the it also had to do with other things that ticked of south. well in any case. Racism will exist even if the flag is up or not. if taking down the flag helps then all means takes it down. jeez I'm rambling ill shut up now. have a good day everyone

          • Heres my opinion. I think the flag was built upon slavery.. the hate of other races.. you get my point. ALTHOUGH, I dont care if its taken down or not. It literally will not stop the true racists of this Earth. They will continue hating the race that they believe shouldnt exist. Racists will racist. *drops mic*

            • There's this thing called history children, it's an important part of it. The Civil War was hardly about slavery, the North and South were so different that the South thought that they should be their own country so they tried to break free, slavery is hardly a percentage of why the war happened at all.

The Confederate Flag should be banned from all public places such as parks and government buildings and museums, but stores and individuals should be allowed to display it as part of their First Amendment right. And I am not a southerner not an I racist. If people want to show off a confederate flag, then others will know that person sucks.

            • A lot of biased views over this. I personally think the flag represents a lot more negativity (because of the history and groups) than a positive look. Just my opinion.

            • Let me go wave my swastika around because It happened in the 1940's and I'm German. You're an idiot. The confederate flag was turned into a SYMBOL of slavery. It's a reminder of the countless lives we lost over identifying another human as a human. Just because it s a flag doesn't mean anything. It's what it stands for that matters. It's also irrelevant since we joined America. It's doesn't stand for anything, but I can see you guys saying "it stood for the doughs independence!" Do tell, why was that a good thing? It's offensive and a ridiculous notion.

              • Either put it in a box, or raise a flag right next to it that says "black power", those are the only two options

              • I don't really care, but maybe they should "retire" it to make everyone happy. The white southerners would think that it was being removed from use because it is sacred, and black people would think they removed it because it is a symbol of racism, and no one would be allowed to use it.

              • The flag is an explicit symbol of white supremacy. It was created by people who killed in defense of slavery and resurrected by people who killed in defense of segregation. If that's the (Lost) cause you want to champion, or the history you want to take pride in, then I guess that's your prerogative.

I'm really not bothered whether they keep the flag or not, I don't see it has having any bearing on anything really. Some serious misdirection has been used to change the debate from gun control and racism to a meaningless flag.
