Waking

"Eyes up, Guardian." These were the first words I remember hearing. When I try to think of what was before those words, there's nothing. Just an empty space. I'm not even certain if what I am writing here makes any sense or if it is part of an actual language. As far as I know, this is all gibberish and makes as much sense to someone else as saying "shark carpet hammer bayou disinfect" would to me. Eyes up. It's not a greeting or a request. It's very obviously a command and I do as I'm told, though I don't know why. This strange, floating device speaks to me like it is a person and not a tool. It seems shocked I am alive, but why shouldn't I be? All I know is what I'm told, and I'm told to hide, find a weapon and fight. When I look to my past it is empty, not even a void, but when I look to my future, all I see is war.

  • Yet, I'm alive. Got that I am grateful. I can feel my heart beating and my chest rising. I can feel the wind on my cheek during this few precious moments I take my helmet off. I can move and dance and jump and run. I can squeeze the trigger. Throw a grenade into the face of the monsters. Float on the wind. And I am beautiful. My face is that of unchanging youth. And when I die, I am brought back. Surely these things have value. And yet, I cannot shake this feeling of emptiness, routine and ennui.
