Skolas, A Beginner's Guide

Guardians, Edit 2: this guide is still relevant despite recent changes to the Skolas encounter. In fact, one could argue it is even more relevant. I may make additional changes to this to ensure it reflects the update to Skolas. On another note, one comment embedded links for me to update this post and link to the relevant sections. I will update this in due course. EDIT: This post is split up into multiple posts. Unfortunately, I'd have to link them together, which I have no way to do on my iPad, so this will have to suffice for now. Please note that there are four posts: introduction; before you enter; the fight and the strategy. Please be mindful to keep them to the top, if you are going to comment. Thanks! There are a lot of strategies around about how to bring down Skolas on the level 35 Prison of Elders - Skolas' Revenge. Generally, people haven't found it too difficult using the "burn him down before everything spawns and kills us" method. Admittedly, I did this in the first week with three Gjallahorns and it worked like a charm. Sadly, however, many of us do not have Gjallahorns (or, during the arc and void burn weeks, high impact snipers or Fourth Horsemen in order to burn him down fast enough; and frankly, some of us aren't Titans, so that method may not work). If you're a beginner to Skolas, and need a few tips/strategies, this post may be of some help. To others, this may not be of any help at all, but I'm not posting it for your sake. This is a beginner level guide. ABOUT ME Before I begin, I want to briefly tell you my experience with Destiny. I've been playing Destiny since September 2014. In that time, I've accumulated about 1400 hours played time, 100+ Crota hard mode completions (mostly as swordbearer), 150+ Crota normal completions, 50+ VOG Hard completions, and have now completed Skolas several times. I play mostly with a small team of friends and family, but I am always there to lend a hand to anyone that wants it. I'm a New Zealand-born Australian resident, and am currently studying Masters degree. THE BASICS Skolas essentially has three different mechanics, split up into "phases" of the fight: 1. The breaking of the bonds between him and the servitors; 2. The essence and immune (de)buffs; 3. Defusing the mines. Skolas himself has two different damage kinds: 1. His Scorch Cannon; and 2. The ground slam (occurs when you get within 1-2 metres - damage from this can be avoided by double jumping or standing on a higher ledge to where he is). There are many types of enemies (or "adds" or "mobs") that you'll encounter, and all are Tier 1 (red bar), assuming Heroic or Epic modifier is not on: 1. Shanks; 2. Captains (both shotgun and sword; swords will one hit you, no matter what burn); 3. Vandals (both kinds); and 4. Dregs.

THE FIGHT Now that we have the preparatory work out of the way, I will attempt to breakdown the mechanics in considerable detail. This may be missing a few bits of information, but it should be clear enough. After this, I will explain the strategy we use. 1. The Weakening and Breaking of the Bonds This part is relatively straight forward. In order to deal damage to Skolas, you must first weaken the bonds between him and the Servitors. To do so, you must kill one of the servitors. They are big white-blue servitors, with no other significant features. The first Servitor will spawn on the far left, out the front of a door. It may shoot at you as you approach it, though this seldom occurs and you won't take too much damage, even though void burn may be on. After killing the Servitor, you will have 20 seconds to deal as much damage to Skolas as you can. There will be a timer in the bottom left corner of your screen, that shows how long is remaining. If you deal enough damage, you will break the chains between Skolas and the Servitors, and you will no longer need to kill them. This occurs when Skolas is at approximately 70-80% of his total health. If you do not deal enough damage, you will have to kill another Servitor and continue dealing damage to Skolas. Rinse and repeat until the chains are broken. If you scare the Servitors, they will attempt to float away. If you do not kill them, they will float to the middle of the map, and hide amongst the plane parts. Another will not spawn on the side that that Servitor relates to until that one is dead. 2. The Essence In my experience, this is the most difficult mechanic of this fight. It has caused more wipes in my team than any other mechanic. Timing must be pretty precise, and controlling the changing of the essence is a difficult task, given that the adds are strong and Skolas is a bit of a douche. Once you have broken the chains between Skolas and the Servitors, Skolas will taint a player's essence. You will know if you have the essence, as your screen turns a greenish colour, it may become difficult to see, and you will have a timer in the bottom left corner of your screen, counting down from roughly 25-30 seconds. In order to remove the essence, one of the other players on your team must take it from you. Once another player has taken it from you, you will receive an "immune" debuff that will countdown in the bottom left corner of your screen from 40 seconds. Once this is gone, you will be able to take the essence from another player. Despite the immune debuff, Skolas may still taint you again. Only one player at any one time may have the essence, so in order to receive the essence whilst immune, one or both of your team mates must have died with the essence on one of them. This mechanic therefore requires you to pass it between players every 25 seconds or so, for the remainder of the fight. If you grab the essence off someone who has only had it for a second or two, they will not receive the immune debuff. TIP: if you are immune, and standing next to the person with the essence (so that it comes up and says "you are immune", meaning you can't take the essence), you CANNOT reload. You will either have to empty your clip, or move away from the person. 3. The Bombs If you've done most other Prison of Elders before, you will be very familiar with the task that requires you to defuse the mines as they pop up. You will have thirty seconds to defuse each. It takes approximately 7-8 seconds for one person to defuse it, and half of that time for two people to defuse each bomb. Defusing the bombs in Skolas comes in two waves of three bombs: one when Skolas reaches approximately 50% of his health; and another when Skolas reaches about 25% of his health. There are three spawn points: 1. On the far left, bottom platform. Far left corner, behind a pole, next to a door that Shanks escape from. 2. On the far right, upper platform. This platform has two panel sheets, one either end of the platform, protecting it from some enemy fire. 3. On top of a broken plane, in the middle (towards the far right platform), protected by one long panel sheet on one side, and two smaller ones on another. Defuse these before the time runs out, or you wipe. THE STRATEGY Here is where I'll describe the strategy that my team and I use. Keep in mind that this strategy works for us, but it should be altered to suit your play style. I'll attempt to do this is a series of dot points, to avoid walls of text (think we have enough of that already, haha). 1. Get prepared. Ensure you have reloaded your heavy and special and have full ammunition to burn down Skolas. 2. Enter the arena, run all of the way left, to where the Servitor is. Everyone should run that way. You will see the Servitor as you approach. Get one person to take this down with their special (if shotgun) or heavy. 3. When the Servitor is dead, everyone needs to burn Skolas. If you are using a sniper, take consistent head shots at him. If using a shotgun, shoot him with your heavy weapon. You may or may not break the chains by the time the 20 seconds is up. 4. Regardless of whether you have or have not broken the chains, as soon as the 20 seconds are up, everyone needs to run left. You will run up stairs, to the top platform, and jump off the end. You need to run from there to the platform on the opposite side. 5. If you have not broken the chains, kill the Servitor as soon as you see it. Do NOT wait for Skolas to get over to you, because the Servitor may have floated away by then, and could be in the middle, which can be difficult to get to and may cause one or more people to die. Do not worry about Skolas for now. 6. At this point, adds will be spawning or will have spawned. Kill as many as you can. This is where a machine gun comes in handy, as it may melt the adds. If you are sniping, do not snipe the adds. If you are using a shotgun, ensure that you keep an eye out on either end of the platform. Adds tend to jump up on the platform, making them easy picking for a shotgun. When clearing adds, prioritise them to be killed in the following order, from most important to least: sniper vandals, shotgun captains, other vandals, sword captains (unless they're close, then they take priority over all others), dregs, and shanks. If it is arc burn, prioritise in the following order: all vandals, shanks, dregs, sword captains, and shotgun captains. If solar burn, shotgun captains take priority over all others. 6.5. If you had broken the chains earlier, one of your players will have been tainted. You NEED them to notify your team leader when they are at approximately 7-10 seconds remaining. Your team leader should nominate themselves or the other player to take the essence. This order of swapping the essence should be the same order for the rest of the fight, assuming all players are alive. I always nominate the hunter to go second, unless they have it initially. It will become clear why soon. 7. Once Skolas gets close to your team, and because the splash damage of his cannon does so much damage, you will need to rotate. You should have killed a few adds by this point, so it shouldn't be difficult to rotate and stay alive. In order to rotate, you will need to run to the left. Always rotate left, unless there are too many adds blocking your way or if you will run into Skolas. You may still run left if he is on your left, as long as you will not cross within 1-2 metres of him. Keep running left, until you get back to the door that you come through initially. Ensure that the players with shotguns always have it equipped when rotating, as sword Captains can one hit players (and they spawn mostly on the path from the far right platform to the far left platform) and there may be adds chasing you. 7.5. There is a reason why you always rotate left: the "whirlpool effect", we call it. It applies mostly to Skolas, but it may also apply to adds. This essentially means that Skolas will always stay in the middle, making him easy picking for your sniper(s). You're essentially running circles around him, taking him down slowly, and maintaining distance between you and him.

BEFORE YOU ENTER Everything you have on your guardian can help you bring down Skolas and the adds that will invariably swarm you. A well-timed heavy ammo synthesis can be the difference between killing Skolas and wiping the entire team. So, here's a rundown of things you'll need. 1. Your best primary weapon, prioritised for burns (hence exotic primaries are sub-optimal). You'll want at least a 331 primary. I used Word of Crota (365) for void burn, Fatebringer (365) for arc burn, and Vision of Confluence (365) for solar burn. Other solid weapons are the Fang of Ir'yut (I hope I'm spelling that correctly), Praedyth's Timepiece, and Oversoul Edict, along with any primary weapons obtained from Skolas himself or Trials of Osiris (adept weapons) (note: the non-elemental versions are sub-optimal). It is also important to note that, whilst some of your encounters will be within range for a quick spray with an auto rifle, all auto rifles, since the patch, are not preferred, as most of your encounters will be medium-long range. Additionally, the exotic primaries that do deal elemental damage are only relevant if you will not be using exotics for other slots (especially since they both suck in PVE). 2. Your best special weapon, again, prioritised for burns. Exotics may be used in these slots, and some can be very effective. In my experience, a team of two shotguns and one sniper is best, whilst one shotgun and two snipers is fantastic, if your shotgunner is proficient, efficient and effective. Fusion rifles are subpar and do not make the cut, unless it is the exotic arc fusion rifle (the name of which currently escapes me). If using a shotgun, ensure it is at least 331, with both a good rate of fire and solid impact. Range is necessary. Medium-high reload speed is also a benefit. Hard Luck Charm, Found Verdict, Swordbreaker, the new Dead Orbit shotgun, Party Crasher, etc. are all good examples of solid shotguns. Invective is also great for solar burn, as the regenerate ammo perk can save you having to synth for special. Felwinter's Lie is not a good shotgun for this, despite its range and enormous impact. If using a sniper, a 365 is preferred, with high impact. LDR 5001, Efrideet's Spear, Black Hammer, etc, are all great snipers. Both exotic snipers are great. Queenbreaker's Bow is not. You may also decide that stability and rate of fire are better in the circumstances, in which case, most of the new snipers are great, along with Praedyth's Revenge (365, not 300). 3. Your best heavy weapon. This is honestly the most important decision you will have to make, but you may easily swap these around mid-fight, to take advantage of certain situations. For instance, for the void burn this week, I swapped between Truth initially, to burn all 8 rounds on the first bond weakening of Skolas, and Corrective Measure (365) for the rest of the fight. You do not need to have either of these to do void burn Skolas, but this was what I chose to run with. For machine guns, there are a multitude of weapons you can choose. You do, however, want something that can deal full damage across half of the map (Corrective Measure should be the absolute minimum range you choose), whilst remaining stable (hence, a Sawtooth Oscillator and many of the new machine guns may not be any good; as a baseline, look towards Jolder's Hammer, Corrective Measure, Against All Odds and the BTRD for good stability). High impact is not necessary, but may be incidental on your choice of machine gun. You will be using your machine gun for both add clearing and shooting at Skolas. Ensure that the weapon you choose has Field Scout or equivalent. If you use a sniper in your special slot, optimise machine gun over rocket launcher. For rocket launchers, ensure that the velocity is high (as Skolas teleports) and you optimise for Clown Cartridge, Grenades and Horseshoes and/or Tracking. You may also want to have the perk that gives you three rockets in the chamber, if that play style suits you, but it isn't necessary. You will mostly be using these to deal damage on Skolas, and occasionally for add clearing. Some of the best rocket launchers in the slot can be Gjallahorn (obviously) and Truth for exotics, and legendaries such as Radegast's Fury, Tomorrow's Answer, The Ash Factory. The standard Dead Orbit rocket (the exact one that you buy from the dealer) is fantastic as well. 4. Exotic armour. This one is tricky, and depends on your class, play style and overall situation. There are some necessaries. For instance, a Titan should have Helm of Saint-14. A warlock may pick anything that assists with the solar subclass, but the Claws of Ahamkara or Light Beyond Nemesis can save your life. A hunter must be spec Bladedancer, so the Mask of the Third Man, Lucky Raspberry, Crest of the Alpha Lupi, and Radiant Dance Machines, are all good options. Depending on your class, remember to spec Intellect > Discipline > Strength. Discipline is not that relevant in Skolas, and Strength is even less relevant (only Hunters should care about strength in this fight, particularly because, if you're close enough to melee anything, you're probably dead already). Intellect, however, is absolutely necessary for warlocks and Titans. You WILL be using your super. 5. Subclass setups. These apply no matter what burn it is: For a Hunter: Bladedancer. Optimally, all stealth mechanics should be slotted in. For a Warlock: Sunsinger. The only necessary perks are self-revive and the scorch shield. For a Titan: Defender. Blessing of Light, Bastion and Untouchable are absolutely necessary. All other subclass perks depend on your play style. I prefer to optimise armour and recovery over agility, but the choice is yours. 6. The team. You must have one leader. Someone must be making the calls and telling people when and where to move to. The others MUST follow directions. Nominate this person collectively, so everyone agrees. Nominate the person with the most experience doing it legitimately, or if none of you have experience, the person with the most ability and understanding of general raid and boss mechanics. This fight is NOT like Crota or Atheon (where there are comparatively very few moving parts), but if there is a person with experience in swordbearing and/or relic holding, they will do fine. This is because, typically, those people are the ones that shout marching orders and call when to fire, where to move to and how to move in the best possible ways. Additionally, though it isn't essential, at least one hunter is preferred. Many hunters can be great, but a hunter can cross the map faster than any other class, and can avoid aggression by going invisible. At least one Titan is also preferred, but isn't necessary. A Titan bubble with Helm of Saint-14 can stop close quarters aggression and allow all players to live longer. A Warlock is perfect for surviving the essence. A Warlock with self-revive can take the essence, wait out the full 30 seconds of the de buff, die and not have the immune debuff, allowing them to grab the essence again. It can be the difference between a wipe and not, particularly if the other two players are dead (and therefore the warlock is the only possible target of the tainting). As the tainting lasts 30 seconds, the Warlock will have at least one minute (with about an additional 10 seconds to receive the debuff again) to rotate around the map, get back to their teammates, revive them and continue the fight.
