My fireteam and i earlier today DESTROYED a team in the trails and went flawless. Two of them then messaged me and called us a bunch of try hards. I've been hearing that term since black ops 1 and i don't understand it because i believe its a term only scrubs and noobs use. Try hards? Duh ima try my best to make sure i end up winning. Thats the whole point of competitive multiplayer. Can someone please clarify (definition) what a "try hard" is and justify why it's bad to be one. Thanks.
Edit: so the most common response i'm getting is a "try-hard" is someone who tries way harder than is needed to win. Or someone who takes gaming to serious. Well It's called "competitive multiplayer", which means it will be competitive which also means people are literally competing to win.
I don't see whats wrong with trying your hardest to win and not lose. Even tho you get no prizes. But based off of most of the answers i've received, most of you are basically saying you should never try hard to win, which makes no sense lol. And if you want to win and try your best, its a bad thing.
I think real gamers understand there is no such thing as a "try-hard" or trying to hard when it comes to video games, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer. In a way, competitive multiplayer is like a sport and to an extent it should be taken serious.
If you don't then competitive multiplayer just isn't for you. You might as well call michael jordan or muhammad ali a try hard which makes no sense in my opinion.
People that really call others try-hards always seem to be little whinny kids that just got their ass whooped but hey thats just my opinion. When it comes to video games there is no such thing as a try-hard. It's basically an expression sore losers use to make the person who won feel less accomplished about their victory. But thanks for all your answers!

A “try hard” is someone who is way better than you, the term is only used by the people who angry for getting paired with opponents who are way better than them. My team went and destroyed other teams in crucible, we had 5.0 and 10.0 kd ratios while they had 0.0 and .25 kd ratios. We may have seemed like “try hards” to them. Also there’s nothing wrong with trying hard, and to keep the noobs you just beat from starting a tantrum (sorry noobs), say “Good game” to them afterwards, or “That was fun, have a nice day” and I bet you $10 they won’t call you a try hard as much.

Alright, how about this...1000 Yard Stare, Last Word, Party Crasher, Blink, Hunter Tether, Titan Fist of HavokThorn....when you have about 20% of players using the most manipulative gear in tandem, with every advantage weighted in their favor, then all those other "try hard at hearts" have to get the same gear and play the same way...well, you wind up with some very repetitive games. You limit the game-style to rush-sliding miraculously through a hail of bullets for a one shot, then bouncing 3 times in the air and repeat ad nauseum. Orrrr, just posting in one spot, not moving, getting one shots...I don't know, I get the premise of trying your best to win. But competitive gaming is akin to a sport. In a sport, manipulative advantages are regulated because they generate imbalances within the game. Which is what has happened in the crucible. So I would call a try hard (by that I mean most of you commenting) someone who has forgotten how to have fun, who is insecure in even the slightest self-perceived weakness, who to even engage in a video game, of all things, they must use the most ridiculously advantaged load out. Instead of just, yanno, enjoying themselves. Basically, y'all must have some self-esteem issues. I feel a little bad for you, until I remember that weak-spirited people who behave in such a manner are called bullies, and bullies find anyway possible to exert dominance over anybody "weaker" then them, which in this case means anyone who doesn't want to make an otherwise interesting interesting game into a boring, repetitive circle jerk.

a tryhard is a guy who doesnt give a -blam!- about having fun and only wants to get a hi kd they ruin the crucible

Edited by gbroque: 8/4/2015 2:04:29 AMIf you "try hard" but have fun and don't flip the -blam!- out at every mistake your team makes your not a tryhard. (REDACTED: If anyone has read what used to be written here, forget you read it. It was mean and uncalled for.) Every death is your or the game or just "lucks" fault. You will get the impression you are playing with a drill Sargent. No matter if you win or lose. ESPECIALLY if you lose. If you use certain guns, or perks, you automatically suck and have no skill. (Don't worry you will still have a life though, the same cannot be said for both). PvE takes no skill. Shotguns take no skill. If a super attack takes out your team it's your fault for not killing him. Tryhards will make truly casual players laugh when they go 40-10 and are still raging that they didn't do well that round. However if you have the misfortune (as I do) to be a tryhard at heart, one who strives to not give a -blam!- and just have fun because it's a goddam game, tryhard will make your every into your natural form and rage until you go outside and bloody your knuckles against the side of your house. Tryhards don't understand that being a tryhard has nothing to do with trying you best at a game and everything to do with your attitude. They will view those wielding certain weapons they deem as op or unskilled as tryhards, while oblivious to their own psychological illness. The irony of your question Is that those who sent you rage mail when you kicked their ass are probably the bigger tryhards. I could keep going but I have a delicious looking meal in front of me I wish to prioritize on... Good luck on having fun with the game and not becoming infected with tryhardiness, which is becoming more and more of a thing since trials of Osiris started...

Edited by Tekn0z: 6/1/2015 5:43:39 PM"Try hard" -- When any destiny PvP Streamer (who plays 24/7 and does nothing else but play Destiny) gets his ass kicked in-game, he calls the opposing team or player a "try hard".

It just means you are using the best guns, armor and perks to win. You are trying hard lol. In their minds I suppose they think they lost because of your teams load outs.
-
Try hard is an insult typically used by those that just got rekt by players of higher skill.
-
Simply an excuse for the less competent players
-
You can't play trials and be mad at playing against "tryhards" that game type is catered to competitive play for an in game reward for not losing.. people want to win. Now if you're playing standard control or something and you're running around with thorn and blink shotgunning, then yea.. you're a try hard. I would never message someone calling them a tryhard, but I'll joke with teammates like "man I hope we don't get a bunch of sweaty tryhards" it's just a game anyway.
-
If I were to try a whole new gun or play style, or even mess around with the vestian dynasty or something.. And there is someone slide blink shot gun meleeing me and not using a primary whatsoever, I would call them a try hard. Because I'm not using my competitive set up. Now It's my fault to begin with but still, you'd think they would realize you are messing around.

I never understood how you could be a try hard in life. We only live once, why would I not try my hardest? Would you rather me be lazy and not try at all?
-
MLG serious sh#ts, that are making life miserable for casuals.
-
A tryhard is what dummies say as they think its an insult when its not. Ever played a game where you tried to lose? no? Everyone plays to win, right? so they are trying. Everyone is a tryhard, anyone that says otherwise is getting carried.
-
A tryhard is someone who brags about going flawless on that game's forums.
-
Someone who instead of playing for fun tries insanely hard to ensure success.
-
Someone who tries to hard
-
Try Hard Noun 1. Somebody who tries too hard at a particular subject or objective to ensure progress or success. They're just mad that they lost so they assume you are a Try Hard. Its essentially somebody complaining because they didn't win, don't pay it much attention.
-
it's anyone who kills you as far as i have seen watching others play.
-
a tryhard is someone who puts way too much time and effort into a game. someone who has basicly devoted every ounce of energy to the point where its no longer fun to play against or with them, because the cost of competeing at that level is too much to make it worth it. while it may be fun for you, most people dont like it.
-
You. Jokes. But i think it's when you try hard?
-
Someone who is better than me
-
You're a tryhard
-
Gr8 b8 m8, I r8 8/8, I would w8 to see your f8 m8

Back in the CoD days "try hard"s were people that tried using "tactical" play styles, but they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if the needed to, so they'd get destroyed.
-
try hard is using thorn or last word in a normal crucible game when you know getting kills wont give you shit

People who git gud
