A brief history on Thorn and The Last Word - 1

TYPE: Journal entry 1
DESCRIPTION: Hive studies

AUTHOR: T-W ASSOCIATIONS: Rey, Ikora; Hive

I love searching lore, though I often get lost in the minutia. I find that most often it is the details that are most important. The old saying, “the devil is in the details” is something I have always believed in. It can drive my mentor crazy, how often I can focus on the smallest of details and let the big picture pass me by. But these details are breadcrumbs leading us in our quest to find knowledge. I visited Ikora today, she gave me my first research project. As a newer Warlock guardian I had not expected much, but she surprised me. I had expected to spend the next 6 months looking at fossils of Ahamkara on Venus; a fairly typical first assignment for Warlocks, but Ikora had different plans for me. She asked me to start a journal and to document what I find. She asked me to re-read my entries as I go to try and take the small details and come to a larger conclusion. I think she is trying to help me look at the bigger picture, not lose focus. This will be my first journal entry. I hope to heavily document what I find over the next few months. Now, onto my assignment, the Hive. Ikora has asked me to study the Hive and to try and understand how the Hive channel the power of the Darkness. The Hive have always interested me, so I was pleased Ikora asked me to devote myself to this research. There are so many questions about the Hive, almost as many as there are about the Vex. The Fallen and Cabal are straight forward, nothing interesting there, just quagmires of politics and power struggles. Titans can figure that stuff out, not really my cup of tea. But the Hive, their sorcery, and their devotion to the Darkness are extremely interesting. I think I surprised Ikora with my initial response, and I think she was a little worried about my initial thoughts on the Hive. If the Guardians are the embodiment of Life infused with Light; the Hive are the antithesis, Death infused with Darkness. We strive to beat back the Darkness, they strive to beat back the Light. In the end, we really aren’t that different. But how did they control Darkness? Guardians know so little about how or why the Traveller chose us to be the bearers of Light; how were the Hive chosen for their role with the Darkness? Even the Vex worship the Darkness like the Hive, yet they are not able to channel the powers of the Darkness in the same way. But to try and understand the Hive and their control over Darkness might be looking at things from too high a level. I need the details. I need something closer to our known understanding for scientific research. I need a control of sorts. We, as Guardians, harness the power of Light. At times, we even infuse our armor with that power. Our very approach to Light is one of defense. And the Hive, as our antithesis, approach the infusion of their Darkness at the opposite end, offense. While the Hives ability to harvest Darkness may be beyond our current understanding, there are examples through our history of the Hive infusing human objects with Hive sorcery. There are even whispers of Guardians harnessing weapons that originated from the Hive. But there is only one known occurrence of a Guardian themselves being infused with Darkness. These breadcrumbs are where I shall begin. /end journal entry TYPE: Journal entry 2

ASSOCIATIONS: Banshee-44; Master Rahool; Rey, Ikora; The Speaker On Weapons I approached the gunsmith today and asked him for some information on weapons infused with Darkness; for an Exo there was a surprising amount of emotion on his face. He asked my business and I told him that Ikora wanted me to look into the Hive, but he didn’t seem to believe me. He sent me to Ikora for what he called “a permission slip from your mommy”. I approached Ikora about it and she also seemed troubled with the approach I was taking to my research. I gave her my reasoning, but she asked me to drop it. Ikora should know better, never tell a Warlock to drop anything, it only makes them more curious. I travelled to the Cryptarch and he immediately banished me, telling me to take care the kinds of questions I asked. Obviously, I need to go to the top. I went to see the Speaker, what follows is an audio recording. TYPE: Audio Recording DESCRIPTION: Conversation

PARTIES: The Speaker; T-W

ASSOCIATIONS: Yor, Dredgen;

//AUDIO FOLLOWS... Speaker - Greetings Guardian. T-W - Greetings Speaker. Ikora Rey has given me a subject to study as part of my first research project. Speaker - Excellent, how can I be of assistance? T-W - I am not getting much help from Banshee-44 or Master Rahool. Speaker - How strange, and what subject could you be researching that neither our Gunsmith nor Cryptarch could assist you with? T-W - I am looking into weapons infused with Hive sorcery. //RECORDING PAUSED// At this point, I could tell the Speaker was NOT happy, even with his face hidden behind his helmet. I hit a nerve that I did not know existed. //RECORDING COMMENCING// Speaker - And for what reason are you interested in these abominations? T-W - I understand how humans make weapons, and I understand how we infuse our Light into armor, so I figured the processes for infusing Darkness into them… Speaker - Only one Guardian has ever asked me about these weapons, and I will say to you what I wish I had said to him…I cannot help you. //AUDIO RECORDING END//// With that, our conversation ended. A breadcrumb. I already know of the Guardian the Speaker spoke of, all of us do. If you ever stepped foot into the Crucible then his legend was something you could not avoid. Dredgen Yor, the Guardian that killed two of the greatest Guardians ever to have lived. Link to other Chapters
