HoW kicks single players in the teeth! Capped at level 32 and harder weekly strikes!

I have read and contributed to a number of treads on this subject over the last few days. Bungee have pretty much ignored everybody and seem not to care about our opinions. Thus I feel strongly enough to start my own tread. I have been a loyal Destiny fan since the moment I picked up my pre-ordered copy back in September 2014. However, the recent release of House of Wolves has left me bitterly disappointed. Needless to say I will not be purchasing it nor will I continue to play Destiny in any meaningful way. Since day one, as a single player, I have been panelised by the levelling system. Pre Dark Below I could only reach level 29 due to not being able to obtain raid gear. During the early days I was also excluded from weekly strikes. This made obtaining exotic gear a fair challenge as coins build up very slowly by other means. But I enjoyed the game so continued to play between bouts of other games. The weekly issue was, however, fixed early this year by the advent of matchmaking in weekly strikes and this rekindled my interest in the game allowing me to both participate in the satisfying strikes and improve my characters by obtaining better gear. I could still only reach level 31 due to not being able to obtain raid gear from the newly added raid (Crota’s End). This didn’t seem too bad as I had access to the majority of the rest of the game and the gameplay experience was still very good. Now, instead of only being able to reach one level below the cap, the advent of HoW means I will be left two levels short of the cap due to no matchmaking in PoE beyond level 28. Thus, Bungie are asking me to pay £20 for an add-on that I will never be able to appreciate. Once the story missions are completed I will be left with the same old stuff to do. Further to this weekly strikes will be harder due to the fact that I’m now two levels below the cap and these have been ramped up by two levels of difficulty. Not only can I not realise the new content but existing content is effectively being reduced. Many people have suggested the advent of optional Matchmaking, this would satisfy everyone as those with teams could turn it off and those that need to use it could progress in the game. As this already exists for other high level activities (such as weekly strikes) I can’t see why it could not be easily implemented in other modes. For those who wish to comment I’m aware of the LFG forums. For various reasons these are not viable alternative for many players. The point of this post is that if we buy a game we should have access to its content without the need for third party sites

  • I'm a solo-er, and the jury is still out as to what I'll be able to do in HoW because I haven't really tried doing a lot of the "elder" game content yet (won't say "end"-game because that to me is the level-cap stuff previously, like HM raids, etc.). Been having a blast just playing the story missions, etc. However, while yes it's hard to get to L33 because you need Etheric light, that is supposed to drop in NFs. Now, NFs are level 32, so you get no level penalty for being L32. And because of the level penalty, many people think you get a level advantage if you are L33 and the content is L32, and that is FALSE. The only advantage you have for being L33 over L32 is that your defense value is higher. But if you equip one ascended exotic (since that uses an exotic shard and not etheric light) and all 36 light armor, you get to 32.5. I haven't worked it out, but I would have to guess that the extra defense you get for that half a level of light is probably miniscule--and even at L34 might not be all that noticeable, but I have no idea. So, don't sweat not being L33, IMHO. What I think is perhaps more troubling is that you probably really need ascended WEAPONS more than ascended ARMOR. I posted elsewhere, and found that my fully ascended Patience and Time could not reliably stagger Aksor on the Weekly Heroic, but a fully ascended Ice Breaker could. The difference, of course, is that P&T is a mid-impact sniper--but I've never had problems staggering other bosses prior to HoW in the heroics before, or maybe even the NFs when there wasn't a burn. So, it appears to me the scaling of enemy health has outpaced the damage scaling of the P&T. I have higher impact snipers (LDRs), but no etheric light to ascend them. FYI, I made it to the last room of the new NF this week as a L32, using my Badger w/Firefly, an LDR arc sniper, and Thunderlord MG, but died when I got bum-rushed by the shanks (which I managed to live through), then the captain (which I didn't). I decided to try it "blind" and didn't look up any gameplay vids. Maybe now that I know what's coming, I might be able to do it. You can bet that whatever I get any Etheric Light, armor ISN'T going to be my priority for it.
