A Case for Matchmaking

TL;DR is at the bottom. I'm going to preface this by first stating the obvious: Bungie has said before that they intentionally left universal matchmaking out, and they seem pretty married to the idea. I understand their intent, and I see where they are coming from. But, there's a problem with the lack of matchmaking in endgame content. I, for example, have some issues with this policy. I have only 1 friend who even owns Destiny, and they don't play enough to be able to run endgame successfully. I also don't have all day to play, so when I have an hour to burn I don't have time to spend 30 minutes on /r/fireteams or lfg. As a result, I've been able to run 1--yes, count it, 1--raid. No nightfall. And now, I'm stuck running the lowest level of Prison of Elders, dooming me to never hit the cap with my current gear. I'll just be frank for a moment--this is poor design. For hardcore gamers, it works great. For people in dedicated and active clans, it works great. But for the rest of us, endgame content is simply locked out. For me, I have law school in the way. Others have demanding jobs, some have kids, and a number of them have both. Our free time is already at a minimum, so why insert an artificial barrier that just burns more of it? I don't want to spend half of my time finding teammates when a matchmaking system could do just as well. On /r/fireteams or lfg I'm simply going to play with a stranger anyway, so what exactly is the point of its exclusion? I know a lot of you read this and think, "it's not that hard you whiner, just take a few minutes to find a team like everyone else." You're right. I could do that. Just like in RPG games, they could leave out the map and make you do it on pen and paper yourself (used to be that way, actually). Bungie could remove matchmaking from Crucible, have everyone go on lfg instead, and still have a game that plays perfectly fine. Destiny could even not tell your saved up currency amounts or reputation levels, and make you keep track of your Destiny checkbook by hand. People would find a way to play the game regardless. But with today's hardware allowing for the convenience of quick in-game matchmaking, why is it not used? If I'm playing with strangers either way, I'd rather just start the game mode and go right into the action. Just because people have found a way to make it work doesn't make it the best solution. Bungie, I know you love the concept of Destiny gamers banding together and becoming a massive community-focuses game. I do too. However, forcing people to turn to 3rd-party matchmakers isn't the solution. All you do is stop a segment (maybe small, maybe large, I'm not sure) of your fans from enjoying the entirety of the experience you've worked so hard to create. If nothing else, do a trial run for a month to see how it goes. You might be surprised by the results. TL;DR: Expand matchmaking to everything to help out the folks with limited time to play Destiny. If we want our own team pre-made, we'll form a fireteam beforehand. If not, the computer will do it for us.

        • /Agree! Thanks for posting. I spend more time grouping for endgame content then playing it some days... It's a silly premise Destiny operates on and every MMO I've played in the past that started with the same bad approach eventually admitted they were wrong and added matchmaking for everything. Time for Bungie to learn from others past mistakes.

            • Optional matchmaking 100% should be available for all modes.

              • Nah. The DLC has been out for only a few days. I don't understand why you feel the need to hit max level NOW. There's plenty of time to get it done. Casual gamers were not the demographic for this game. Most players have logged 600+ hours. Destiny was meant to grind. That's why the activities take forever, there are numerous bounties, and you're able to make three characters to do them all over and over again. (Yes, I know that's not the only reason you can have three characters). There are plenty of other games out there that can bend to your needs. Destiny and their developers have changed a lot to help casuals but they aren't just going to hand everything out or add matchmaking to playlists that were MEANT for a hand picked fire team. Just saying.

                  • Right on. Was so excited for trials, PoE, and ascending my gear, but was only met with disappointment when I found out I couldn't either of those activities AND would have to wait till iron banner to ascend. Bump

                    • Totally and completely agreed. I´m even thinking about start a movement, or something like that to plead for matchmaking ! I have family, kids, job and a life. And yes, I do play Video games. Matchmaking shouldn´t be mandatory, but it must be optional, I want to play a game, not find a date on match.com, please bungie ! I am on the verge of dropping Destiny, which I love despite its various flaws because of this no matchmaking nonsense. I don´t want to spend precious gaming minutes on LFG or trying to invite everyone in the tower for a raid. Bungie, if you want long term players, understand us !

                      • Bump. I work, I got no time to run around the tower begging strangers to go to Trials of Osiris or Prison of Elders with me, not only this is incredibly time consuming and humiliating, it's a slap in face from Bungie who already have matchmaking engine working for strikes and weekly heroic but refuse to implement it for other stuff. Code is there, it's a simple addition. I guess I'm not going to see Etheric light any time soon because doing my own matchmaking on 3rd sites is not my idea of how this game should work. If this game is for hardcore gamers with tons of destiny-playing friends and tons of time - so be it, screw the rest of us.

                        • Totally agree, I wrote a post on this a few days back...same boat as you....only have an hour or so most times to play the game... Honestly....using a 3rd party site is exactly the same as matchmaking....you still don't know the people you are expecting to play with

                          • Sorry, gaming is a luxury is not a most. The game is not tailored for casuals and if you are so busy why not wait untill you are done with law school or at least be on vacation. Games are for people with time and money to spare, dont get me wrong you dont have to be rich but you have to be confortable.

                            • If you're not a hardcore player there's actually no reason for you to need to hit level cap. That's how it's designed.
