I'm just curious what is the deal with the pre-order boycott?

Someone could literal write a wall of text as to why. No more releasing broken games to just patch up later is my favorite reason among countless others. Plus if you got to preorder a game just to get custom skin or a gun that's completely useless then I got stuff I want sell you since your so easy Normally if I want the game I'll buy it the day after release IF all looks good plus I'm all digital some people say then can't sell them in which I never did in the first place I gift them to my brother or nephew when finished

    • I've actually NEVER pre ordered a game, because all I want is to experience the core game, not to mess around with extras. if I want more, I'll buy any DLC the game has IF it's reasonably priced. all of us, as a consumer base, and most importantly as gamers need to be more aware of what the bigger companies are doing. if you make them think that they will get away with it, THEY WILL TRY TO GET AWAY WITH IT. you give them an inch, and they'll take a mile.

        • look, it's going to go both ways with this. If you know the developer and you trust and like them then pre-ordering is fine. If you don't like the day one dlc or exclusive stuff then no. Majority of the time day one dlc doesn't affect anything. Yeah there might be some cool weapons but they turn out to be crap later on in the game.

        • The only reason I sometimes pre order is the fact at 'game' in the uk we get 10% extra on traid in value on old games, kind of scam you in to doing it, but if there a game I will 100% be buying (arkham knight) I may as well

        • While it might have been admissible at one point, pre-order culture has become a flat out anti-consumerist trend. Let me ask you this: What good does it do for you to pre-order? Is it because you're worried about not getting it ahead of time? Most games these days are digital downloads. The major releases that people normally get physical copies of are usually packed into every retail store in the country. Maybe it's because of that exclusive content that you want to get? Fair enough, but doesn't that amount to the developer basically holding that content hostage? Hell, sometimes it doesn't matter if you pre-order or not. I got Fallout: New Vegas a day after it came out at walmart and I still got a code for the preorder content. Maybe you want to show your loyalty to your favorite game company? Very noble of you, I'm sure they'll write you thank you note some day. Well, whatever. If you want to tell companies that don't personally care about you that you're willing to shell out your hard earned cash (or your parent's cash for that matter) in the vague hope that they'll pat you on the head, fine, but don't feel too confused when companies start publishing increasingly half finished games and yearly rehashes. It's not necessarily that the developers themselves don't have your interests in mind; I have no doubt that many in the industry are honest hard working folks that take pride in what they sell. Unfortunately, pretty much every AAA publisher is run by people that don't understand or give a shit about the satisfaction of customers. They send ass backwards mandates to developers in order to nickle and dime the customer in every conceivable way because they were told by market researches that also don't care about their customers. In the past couple of years, certain developers have flat out lied to consumers. Products are released with day one patches that still don't make the product fully functional. Games are hyped with screenshots that are doctored. Even "Gameplay demos" can't be trusted anymore. Does this mean that you can't buy any AAA games anymore? No, but it means that you should be well aware that the majority of the video game industry is not your friend and you should not trust it.

          • I don't pre order, haven't for years now. I stopped paying for things before they are released due to the amount of shit that gets released. Games not working properly and needing multiple patches to get to play, Uplay servers going down on day one of a games launch, bugs needed patched out, games not being as advertised (Aliens Colonial Marines) and various other issues. It's better if I wait a few days and see what is being said and then decide if i'm going to buy or not. If things are smooth, go ahead and buy. If things aren't smooth, avoid it. Take Dragon Age Inquisition. A hell of a lot of threads appeared on various websites about it not working properly. My son got a copy for his Xbox One and it wouldn't play until the second patch, kept crashing and multiple other issues between crashes. I didn't buy that for 6 months. So, no. I don't pre order and I never will, nor do I buy season passes.

          • I only preorder if I know for certain I'm going to get the game day 1. Even then, I usually only do it two, maybe three weeks before release. I would never preorder a game that is due in six months. There's too many variables that could cause delays.

Listen to Crackerjack. Basically, the more you people pre-order... the more content you have to look forward too being withheld. Take all those pre-order incentives and just imagine them ripping content out of the game to sell it later as DLC. People who like to research a product first, before buying. End up having to pay for that content. People who throw money away like it wasn't theirs to being with... continually get rewarded for being stupid with money. They literally are conditioning you people to be stupid consumers. And you people keep buying into it. And the rest of us... have to suffer the consequences of your inability to wait, which translates into MORE DLC. And not just any DLC. DLC that was quite literally ripped from the game just to nickle and dime you for it later. When it finally reaches a point that you only get half a game because you didn't pre-order it... I hope you all wake up before it gets to that point. You're leaving us with 2 options, when you support pre-ordering. Either be a stupid consumer and spend money on products that don't exist yet. Or be a stupid consumer and spend money on products that should have been included already with the base game. And in the case of Witcher 3. Here is what happened. Console Pre-orders were larger than PC pre-orders. So what did they do.... They designed it for consoles first. I'm sorry but, it's better to design for PC first then port to Console. Not the other way around. It's a equivalent of trying to take a 320p image and upscale it. When you should be taking a 1080p image and downscaling it instead. In the first case, You get shit quality through and through. In the other case. You'll actually get better quality for both.

                  • I'm not sure. However the point in pre-ordering from a business standpoint is to get an idea of the demand for their product, to avoid under, or overproducing their product. You can pre-order tons of things, it's not limited to video games. I guess the boycott is just the apprehensive nature of gamers as they've been for a long time.

                  • Because of a few buggy games being released lately, (*coughs*, Assassins Creed: Unity, *coughs*) some people have got it into their heads that the pre-order thing is being abused by the game industry. The argument runs like this: Publisher: We've got enough pre-orders to make a disgustingly obscene profit on this game. Is it ready? Game dev: No, it's a bit buggy and needs a bit more work. Publisher: We don't care about a few bugs, get it out the door 'as is', fix it later if IGN bitches about it, and move on to the next one. Game dev: But... Publisher: You're fired! You there! Yes you! You're the new head of development. Get the game out the door! Now! New game dev: Yes sir! It might be true, but at the end of the day publishers are answerable to their shareholders and you can't keep tweaking a game forever. It's a sad fact that if a game gets delayed people get annoyed. If a game is released on time with a few bugs, people get annoyed. If a game is perfect in every way, some people get annoyed. Phew! Back to my tea and cornflakes...
