The Anatomy of Wargear: Hand Cannons

I'm one of those people who like to delve way too deeply into how things like sci-fi guns work. Destiny is of course my latest curiosity, and the one thing that bugs the ever-loving shit out of me is just how the hell an over-sized revolver can hold and fire more than six rounds. Now, now, I know what you're thinking; "Dude, it's just a videogame. Chill the -blam!- out." But let's really think about this. HOW does this work? What are the mechanics and science behind it? Is there an actual in-game reason or is it full blown space magic? Because the game's lore doesn't go over it very well. Let's take a look at Hawkmoon, for example. It's a beautiful, well-crafted piece of kit, right? Like a Desert Eagle and a .44 Magnum had incredibly awesome sex and spawned that thing as a result. For those of you unlucky enough to not wield this thing, one feature is prominent; it holds 13 shots in it's 40.6mm polymer round cylinder. First off, what exactly is a 40.6mm polymer round? Lord knows I've scoured Google and couldn't find a damn thing about it (at least regarding ballistics. I found some weird, unrelated shit that I won't go into.) But here's what I do know; a lot of Hand Cannons in this game use a 40mm-40.6mm polymer round as their source of ammunition. This is the oddest thing about these guns because nobody that I know of has any idea just how the -blam!- this works. On a normal revolver, let's say in this case Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum, we can see just by looking at the cylinder (the part where the bullets go in) has six holes in it, because it can hold and fire six head-exploding-ly powerful .44 magnum rounds. We also know it holds six rounds because Harry himself said it does ("... did I fire six shots or only five?") But we know Destiny's guns don't operate the same way, nor fire the same type of ammo. We know that when you reload a Hand Cannon, a big ass 40mm-ish cylinder is ejected from the magazine, mainly via gravity. If you look closely enough there are no bullets or holes for bullets sticking out of the front of the round. So, what the -blam!- is exiting out of the barrel? And if it's just one big round, why does the cylinder revolve like a regular double-action revolver? My theory is that, being futuristic guns, Hand Cannons don't fire bullets as we know them. Those 40mm polymer rounds? They're batteries. And they fire bolts of energy that have the kinetic properties of a bullet. This is of course my hypothesis and until Bungie comes around and explains just how their guns work (Which they probably won't do), this is what makes the most sense. So what do you all think? Discuss.
