20+ years of FPS: the long road to Destiny

I personally love Destiny. I won't claim it's perfect, but it is the latest stage in what I see as an evolution of FPS games over the years. I would start with Wolfenstein on PC, the granddaddy of FPS. Those who are old enough will remember how amazing it was when you'd never seen an FPS before. From moving your character around on the screen, suddenly you WERE the character, looking through their eyes. Doom followed, which gave a greater variety of enemies, weapons and environments. After that my love of FPS moved to consoles with Golden Eye on Nintendo64 giving me my first taste of playing with a controller rather than a keyboard (younger gamers may not be aware, but Wolfenstein and Doom were before the age of the computer mouse, keyboard only), as well as my first taste of PVP, played splitscreen against friends. The first console I bought was the original PlayStation, which introduced dual joysticks. Playing Medal of Honor, rather than just 360 degrees, suddenly I could also look up and down! Revolutionary! While saving for a PlayStation2, I played Halo CE at a friends house and was hooked, and bought an Xbox instead. I loved the gameplay and the sci-fi setting, I couldn't get enough. It was also the birth of my love of multiplayer co-op. Halo2 followed, and shortly before the release of Halo3 I finally had an Internet connection, and I began playing my first online multiplayer. The arrival of Halo3 saw my love for PVP really take off, and also began my love for unlockable items. Striving to get all the armor unlocked gave me a goal and added a whole new dimension to the FPS experience. From there it was Halo: Reach which added custom loadouts, allowing for the first time the ability to set up my character to best suit my gameplay style. From there, disappointed by Halo4, I tried the COD series, playing first MW2, followed by Black Ops 1 & 2, which cemented my addiction to unlocks. I loved the experience of unlocking each new weapon, and then it's attachments, allowing me to expand my customisation options. Destiny to me is the latest and best step in this long evolution, bringing together all my favourite facets of earlier games. I love the sci-fi setting, and the story, although currently very barebones, has great potential, with so many questions I hope will be answered over time. It has the multiplayer co-op I love, and has expanded upon it in a fantastic way, from the challenge of nightfall strikes, to the larger and teamwork focused raids. It has PVP, with the ability to customise my characters to my own play style to the greatest extent I've experienced. And of course it has the 'grind', the constant drive for new items, whether it be armor and weapons, or simply shaders and ships. I certainly don't claim that Destiny is perfect, but I believe it is the latest game in a long line of progressive improvements dating back over decades. While I am not blind to the flaws, I also see a fantastic potential. I applaud Bungie for their daring move into a new frontier for FPS games, and I see the current Destiny as the latest instalment in a chain that will keep improving and expanding on the FPS genre I love. I look forward to the future, and can only imagine the possibilities. Whatever comes, I will be there, weapon at the ready. Bring it on! Edit: Just to clarify, by no means is this supposed to list the pioneers of these or any other features, and I have done no research into any of this. It is merely my recollection of which games stood out in my memory as having something I hadn't experienced before. Also, since this goes back to over 20 years ago, it is entirely possible there are things I have forgotten about or gotten confused. Thanks everyone for your comments, and keep them coming! Edit: Glad to have helped inspire all this nostalgia, so many fond memories, there's obviously a lot of diehard gamers out there.

  • Anyone remember Hexen? It was a sequel to Heretic, and I think the last game that used the Doom engine and .wad files, before Quake came out. The level design in that game was fantastic, my favorite of all FPSs. More of a FPS puzzle game, where you had to go back into areas you've already cleared. Flipping a switch in one area would flood another, allowing you to reach a third area that modified the first and so on. It was a really complex maze to get through.

  • What! No BF1942? BF2 for PC? My friend, you missed out on the prodigy of all FPS games. My fps days started in 01, when I was 12. Before that it was RTS with the old command and conquer series. (1997 baby). By 2001 I started a game called command and conquer: renegade. Played that for years. Also played halo 1 and 2 along the way of course. Then of course battlefield 1942 and the entire battlefield series since. Good times man. Good times. Oh and having jets and 64 player multiplayer maps in battlefield 2 was absolutely revolutionary at the time.

          • We share the same rep, basically, but Wolfenstein never got me that deep into it. I played Popoulus and Syndicate. But Doom - oh my gawd - that rocket launcher effect stole the show. Splat! IDKFA. You know what Im talking about. Then I played Heretic too, which was awesome as a nice spinoff. And I think if you'd mix Heretic with Doom back then, you'd get something a little like Destiny designwise with less gore. Destiny is like that game we made up in the schoolyard and talked about 'what if' throwing elements in from imagination. Almost. Still need spacebattles and sparrowracing :)

          • I remember playing Wolfenstein when it first came out. Was around 10. My friend showed it to me but we couldn't play long as it was his dad's game and he wasn't allowed to play it. Loved Dark Forces when it came out. Remember the original MoH and CoD games too. So many good FPS games I can't remember them all.

I too have put more hours into Destiny than any FPS before it, but that's not because it's anything amazing or groundbreaking. It's the skeleton if what might have once been something amazing by people who were passionate about the project. With their departure, the passion was taken over by the money men and we were left with a boring, monotonous grind for very slightly different gear. If it wasn't for meeting some cool people to play with (and play other games with now too) this game would have been added to the dust pile collection a long time ago as there is maybe a weeks worth of casual content. Destiny is a good game that has the potential to be great one day, but it won't be during the destiny 1 lifecycle and it will never be perfect. Just look at the horrible netcode in PVP!!!!!!

          • I still have a good chuckle when I think about back when Apple tried to patent the "one button mouse" in order to mess with MS and then Microsoft patented the "two button mouse".

Did you ever play Dark Forces on the PC? Star wars setting and the sequel let you have force powers. Those were the early days of space magic.

Wolfstein 3D on MSDOS...miss the time when aim and shoot was only needed to have fun... For me the first love was Pathways Into Darkness and then Marathon. From there Wolfstein and Doom where my vice. And the Halo days where carrying around the concrete block that was the original Xbox and a bulky TV just to frag people at LAN parties. I still have the medical bills of the RSI caused by the duke, but those where awesome days. This is an awesome and refreshing post...

Destiny is definitely a step backwards in fps... no custom matchmaking, forge, tournaments, fewer arenas, fewer game types, fewer modes, no custom settings... there are countless fps games that are 5 years old or older that have some or all of these, including past games made by this developer. This is exactly why destiny barely scored a 6.5 rating. Well that... and the "story".

            • Great post homie. I'm right there with you. Never played Halo, sadly, but maybe one day I'll get around to it. I'd also add PC duke Nukem as a milestone. Out of curiosity, do you invert the y-axis?

              • I love Destiny too. I've never spent as much time on other games as I have on Destiny. I haven't played another game in about 8 months, and I probably won't for a long while. Working full time and being a full time college student, the little time I have for games will be spent with the one I'm most vested in; Destiny. Destiny is an amazing game. I definitely see myself playing for its entire lifespan.

              • All of the titles u played were classics. You did miss out on (these being PC games) Quake 3 MP (dat Railgun no ads headshot..rocket jump in PvP ..best kek) Unreal Tournament GOTY(the original Fusion rifle, and host of other things that became staple in PvP). Dat Reedemer though.. Counterstrike 1.6 ..well shit. Probably the best FPS PvP.. And the later PC titles that were generic but still good. But these were on console sometime later.

              • I have to say.....your first line sums up what is wrong with Destiny. "....its not perfect...." Destiny is awesome. Freaking fcuking amazingly awesome. No other game comes close in so many ways. But it was supposed to be perfect, and if Activision hadn't got involved it would be the only game everyone bought and still playing. And there would be very little hate.
