This is one of my idea's for helping balance the crucible. Its a pretty simple concept. Give people access to four types of shields. Kenetic (default), Arc, Solar, and Void. Weapon's with the same element does bonus damage to the first 2/3rds of a person's health bar (The Shield), and a resistants (maybe 20%?) to any element not the same. It could help out balance crucible games, and give titan's and warlocks some flexibility in the hunter dominated world.
Now how the the weapon smith would come in here, aside from he could sell the base shields, he can roll for element's on weapons with kenetic damage or reset a primary to kenetic. Obviously for some type of cost. The exception being exotics, they will have a locked element for when you unlock them.
This could also be a solution with bungies conundrum of keeping the old weapons. Fear of us keeping the same weapon forever. If we had weapons we could elementalize then we may not wanna keep our fatebringer or predeayths timepiece.
