Engrams in HoW

I am trying to prepare for House of Wolves but there is something that I don't understand. I have heard that engrams and packages you get pre HoW won't give you HoW gear. Is this true? Because I have been saving a bunch if exotic engrams for the DLC. If you know please leave a comment, Thanks

Engrams awarded prior to House of Wolves will not award House of Wolves gear. Please see the attached screen shot.
