The challenge of STORYTELLING in Video Games

I was watching (most of) the live feed to promote the upcoming Detiny HoW and couldn't help but zero-in on comments regarding the existence of a story in Destiny. I wanted to start a thread for other people to comment on how best to tell a story in a game and the challenges in doing so. I'll go first: I personally would rig up Destiny such that enemy formations and spawn locations, as well as some of the buildings themselves, would be constantly changing. Each month would come with significant changes to reflect areas where the enemy had been pushed back, buildings reclaimed (or lost) and so forth. This would be combined with cut-scenes and character development. But I accept that this might be too much work; I cant say for sure though, since I have never run a gaming company, haha. But proper cutscenes with proper storytelling is essential. Destiny/Bungie seem to think it is sufficient to hide a story in the inspiration for programming and graphics decisions, but its just not. Its a self-serving cop-out to call that "unexplored territory in the world of storytelling." The bottom line is that the art of "storytelling" has been very well deconstructed. Destiny/Bungie people need to learn about narrative, plot devices, character development, foreshadowing...etc. I personally think that Destiny needs to hire a writer/novelist to help them in this sorely lacking area of the game. The storytelling in the original Deus Ex was so incredibly good, that people have been supporting lacklustre sequels... its an important part of a "good game." Your thoughts?

 • I'm just gonna say most successful game stories are games with no multiplayer. Telltale still do the best stories IMO because they do it episodically they keep you guessing and keep the game fairly simple they're focused and that makes the story all the better, as for the best way to convey story in destiny I feel as though there might have been a good story there once but they cut it up
possibly to make it episodic possibly for money grabbing
This is a game that simply was born to die the best stories are mostly/always from the same companies and that's because some company's can do story and some can't and destiny was a throw together of two that were mediocre at best

 • I agree, the main story was very watered down for marketing reasons, and unfortunately your going to see that in many new or upcoming games. Fascinating story-telling, character development, and unique universes are now but a minority in the gaming industry. I can only hope that if Destiny wants to survive for ten years...it's going have to add a real campaign, not throw some cut scenes after defending Dinklebot for the tenth time. Games need to focus on creativity, not competition...meaning instead of trying to copy and paste something someone already did, create something new. When a game tries to set itself different, and accomplishes that, with new gameplay, and a great story mode...then it might be *gasp* profitable, who would of thought it?
