A Defender Titians Guide to Crucible (and a PvE tips or two)

I have no actual figure for this fact, but who needs it anyways, it is obvious to anyone who plays Crucible that the defender Titan is THE least used subclass out of all six. This is not a surprise either given the fact that the grenades are ridiculous (magnetic grenade isn't special, vortex rarely gets kills and last too short, and suppression is an acquired taste); the Ward of Dawn is a big sign that says, "SHOOT ME IN THE FACE! IN THE FAAAAAAAACE! DO IT! SHOOT ME IN THE FACE! FACE FACEFACEFACEFACE! NOW! BULLETS IN THE FACE! WANT EM! NEED EM! GIMMEGIMMEGIMME! AT THE SOUND OF THE BELL IT WILL BE FACESHOOTING O'CLOCK! BONGGGGG! KNOCK KNOCK WHO'S THERE SHOOT ME IN THE FACE! END OF JOKE! I'M GONNA SING A SONG! SHOOT ME AT THE END OF IT! DA DA DA DA DA DA DA! BONG!! ...I NOTICE YOU HAVEN'T SHOT ME IN THE FACE! CURIOUS AS TO WHY! Maybe you're weighing the moral pros and cons but let me assure you that OH MY GOD SHOOT ME IN THE GODDAMNED FACE!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?!" (Boarder Lands Two, Face McShooty Face) If ANY other class has a super, you are the first target and can be destroyed; Defender Titan is the least aggressive of all the subclasses and lacks the same satisfaction as landing a couple kills with FoH, Blade Dancer, Golden Gun, Nova Bomb, and even a Radiance rampage. Given ALL of these negative aspects about the defender class, I am sometimes surprised if I do see a defender Titan! HOWEVER, in spite of all these horrible horrible disadvantages, there is a secret that a few Guardians among us know; the Defender Titan, in the right hands, is a game changer in ever PvP game mode. It is a deadly and infuriating master of Crucible that is unpredictable to the enemy because no one has had the chance to learn how to counter it. This is the purpose of this guide, to help make everybody's hands the "right hands", and generally spread the word about Defender in PvP. General (Class Build): I. Jump- I think the type of jump you use is personal preference, none of them are as OP or critical as blink is for other play styles, but I always go for increased height. Being 20ft above an enemy can be really disorienting for them. II. Codex- A Titan's bubble is dependent on the Titan being alive; As soon as you die it disappears. For this reason high armor is really important. I do not know how many times in game I say "If I was any other class and didn't have high armor I would be dead." High armor is that little bit that helps you survive two shots from Timur's Lash, the final burn of Thorn, the difference between escaping a hunter grenade or or not, and jumping out of the way from Nova Bomb. It is super important. Second to armor is recovery. As a Defender Titan there will be a lot of times when you are peaking in and out of a bubble, if you take damage you need to be able to recover quickly and get back out before your enemy runs away are gets a super. I know a lot of other class builds stress agility, and if you are used to agility, a Defender Titan build might be like getting in cold water, but a dead Guardian is a useless one (Self-revivie Warlocks are a pain, but will be addressed later), and Defender Titans are are survival. III. Columns six and eight- A. Sixth- In column six you can choose Bastion, Relentless, or Gift of the Void. In strikes Gift of the Void all day every day. Grab every orb making perk and punch things into the dirt, a true Titan. This class build makes far more orbs than any Warlock with Obsidian Mind and Bad Juju (upwards of 200 orbs in Omnigul). Your buddies will love you, and make it a game! It is really fun to play strikes and see who can make the most orbs (but heads up the orbs at the summery screen is orbs gathered, not orbs made so keep that in mind). Anyways back to PvP, the Defender Titan play style is highly revoles around the Ward of Dawn, for this reason Bastion is all ways the best choice. You really are not giving up much with Gift of the Void and relentless, but if you feel like every time you pop a bubble it is destroyed (not disappearing from you dying) and do not get the full potential of Bastion, throw on Gift of the Void so your teammates get those extra orbs. However, if this guide is any good by the end you will stop loosing your bubble so often. B. Eighth- In column eight you can choose Untouchable, Iron Harvest, and Illuminated. Again in strikes Iron Harvest with a heavy machine gun is a bubble gum orb machine. In PvP this slot depends on which type of bubble you have. If you have armor of light then untouchable is by far your best choice (will go more into detail later). If however, if you have weapons or blessings then Illuminated is going to be the strongest perk for you to equip (again will explain more later). IV. Melee- generally speaking you want unbreakable. It recharges your shield once you get it and goes really well with weapons. If you happen to be using a slow reloading gun, like a hand cannon with high impact (for example Timur’s lash which is a two hit kill on low armor guardians and with WoL is a two hit kill on all Guardians) or are using a heavy weapon then war machine which gives faster reload is REALLY handy. However, Gift of Light is the go to perk for casual PvE like strikes. V. Grenades- Defender Titians have the Magnetic, Spike, and Suppression grenades to choose from. Generally the weakest of the three is the Spike grenade. A.Spike- Yes this grenade has it's moments, usually at a capture point in Control, but over all it is far less critical to the build than the other two grenades. Give it a try, and if you like it great. Usually this grenade goes best with an aggressive zone capturing Titan with armor of light. But this play style is exactly the one that gets Ward of Dawn a bad name because these Titans get supered by enemies A LOT. All in all it is a much weaker Lightning grenade. B. Magnetic- In my opinion this is the second most useful grenade in a Defender build. When magnetic grenade shines is usually in a rumble build, but in most other game variants, suppression is more important. C. Suppression- It took me a long time to realize to what utility a Defender Titan can use suppression. For a general Defender Titan build it is super important to keep your bubble around. But as is obvious people really really like to super a bubble. For this reason suppression grenade is really important. To give a clearer picture, let me outline the capabilities of suppression. Suppression grenades stop all enemies from using their class jump (including blink! its super funny to watch the guy with a shotgun keep trying to blink into your face but he is just jumping like a bunny that wants to be slaughtered),it stops them from using grenades, and stops them form using supers; it also disorients their screen in purple..slime? Anyways, this is basically what keeps you alive. If you see a Voidwalker Warlock or Striker Titan running straight at your bubble, odds are they are about to destroy it. This is why you throw your grenade, damage them, stop them from supering, and make it hard to escape; they are now sitting ducks for you to kill. "BUT!" you may say, "Radiance Warlocks, Blade Dancers, and Golden Guns destroy my bubble too!" Well suppression grenade stops that! YES. If an enemy is, say radianced, then if you time it, you can throw a grenade at them and they will LOOSE their super. Let me be clear, if they are using it, if it is active, you can cancel it out with a suppression grenade. If they activate it right out side your bubble the activation animation is the perfect time to use it (I will explain the different counters to each subclass super later). Suppression grenades also do a surprising amount of damage and I get more kills on damaged enemies around the corner than one might think. Specific (class build play styles): The Armor of Light Titan- Armor of Light is most strongly suited to solo play. For this reason it shines the most in Rumble, but also has moments in Control. This sort of Titan finds more use in Magnetic grenade because he is usually in his bubble and should only pop out when an enemy is watching him to throw a grenade. As far as play style in Rumble goes, this is one of the strongest subclasses in the game. Titan bubbles charge really fast when you are getting kills, and in rumble there is an enemy around every corner and so if you have the gun skill getting a bubble should not be too difficult. The most important parts about this strategy (and every strategy) is timing and placement. Placement- for an armor of light build high traffic areas are KEY. You are staying near your bubble and you want enemies to come to you. In Control, usually zone capture is the best place to use an Armor of Light bubble but beware. In rumble putting it in doorways is also Very important, you want to block as many paths as possible so that you do not get flanked and you force people to go in your bubble. Timing- you will want to save your bubble for when it is safe. If you are on a rampage at the begging of the game, and it is clear no one else has a super, use it right away. People will come to you in rumble and more often than not are to impatient and greedy to walk away. Shotguns are the weapon to use, I hope this is obvious. If you do run into someone who waits for you to leave, be VERY VERY CAREFUL! Loosing your bubble because you left and got shot in the face is the quickest way to ruin the flow of your match. If someone is waiting for you use a grenade or wait for them. Usually another enemy will have show up and the guy watching you will have to turn his back. NOW is when you leave and hopefully while the two of them fight you can get a the surviver or even both if you have good gun skill... Continued (ran out of characters)

  • Ok I switched up with weapons of light and ran a match of control in the black garden. I set myself up with as much intellect as I could and equipped a scout rifle. It was a pretty one sided match, alot of fun I think I dropped my bubble three times before the match ended. I had the whole team enjoying the bubble love.
