The PVP net code - it's bad

Guys, I know net code for multiplayer games is no small feat. There's a lot going on, multiple connections, etc. So many variables. But you have to do better. It's atrocious. I have probably hundreds of videos now of games made unplayable by awful networking. Players disappearing all over. Dieing by someone across the map a good 5 seconds after I walk away from that spot. I've been gaming since video gaming essentially came to be. I've seen good and bad networking. I'd think in today's world - with broadband being so much more easily attainable that connections would be better. They arent. I had better connections on Counter Strike with a 56k modem. I had a 195ping to a local server and while it wasn't as fluid as when I got cable later that same year, I had fewer crazy issues than I see here. This has to be a priority at some point, right? I know moving to dedicated servers would cost a fortune. It would also offer an incredibly stable/consistent experience. But while that's probably a long way off, can you please optimize the code you have? Can it ONLY pair me with people who have lower than a certain ping? I will wait longer to have a better experience. Having a host with a crap connection dominate a game because he's warping all over is no fun. I will wait 5min to pair up people in my region. Even 10min. Additionally - all of the "bugs" I hear and see in the raids - I bet 95% of them are from bad connection quality. So fix it in pvp and it likely fixes the raids. Help me Bungie Wan kenobi. You're my only hope.

        • So true...this day and age it is sad to see network stability of a game so absolutely piss poor. Here we are after the first DLC and still have problems, how about bungie stops working on new content and just fixes the issues that they have. I am tired of getting kicked out of crucible all the time because of random errors (weasel, etc) I am tired of running around a corner and then some how dying as if the other guy shot through a wall. I am tired of having to shoot extra times because the other guy won't die. I am tired of getting killed by someone after they have died (ie they drop and I see a rocket/grenade coming form their corpse). This is not my internet, this is not my router, as none of this happens on any other game. Fix your shit bungie before it is too late and everyone else leaves.....

          • Just want to say I agree and lousy netcode in console gaming is something I've been banging my head against for years. I too remember playing back in the olden days. My favorite was Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I believe we had a 28.8 modem at the time and later a 56k. As long as you squared away the issues on your end and you connected to a server you pinged best to, the game played great. This was pretty much the case with most shooters of that era. You didn't tax your connection and you tried to find the lowest ping. The End. Now you fast forward to what should be a better infrastructure, faster communication and yet we have far worse online gaming than in the past. There's really only been one console game that I would say got it perfect - and that was Warhawk on PS3. Not only did it show you your number based ping (not this bar system garbage) but it tended to be accurate AND it had a server browser. So you could pick servers you pinged well to and actually get a match that played like it. Yes, people from across the world would still join the server you were on, but even when they did, the high pinger generally had to overcome it, not you. Now, it's increasingly become a system of favoring the weakest of connections, and that baffles me. I understand wanting to be all inclusive, but by degrading the experience of people who actually take the time to streamline their network setup, test their connections and mitigate issues on their end? Makes absolutely no sense. I think Crucible is the best thing about Destiny, but it isn't worth playing when it's hampered by the lowest quality connections. No doubt that PvE is made glitchier by those same poor connections.

            • The sad part is that it is getting worse... The beta connections were smoother than they are now. There are a lot more people on right now because of HoW but this is still no excuse for every game I enter going full red bar and the person with the worst lag has the highest score. It is crazy how much of an advantage someone with a bad connection has. All this stacks on top of the exotics and broken shotguns. I wish we could return to the time with a normal time to kill with fewer 2 shot kill weapons (looking at you Thorn).

              • This is why I am done playing for a bit. I liked (past tense) ToO and I liked pvp specially Iron banner but yesterday we weren't able to complete a match without someone being kicked. Whether it was on our team or on the enemy team. After going through a total of 6 games and 2 score cards (each game we were winning till one of us got kicked.) I said screw it. Ima take a break till reset. I will eventually get the guns I want. Destiny will be there later. (By the way to those who say get better Internet my 150mps/75 mas should be sufficient....If it's not...There are bigger things to worry about.ĺ

Read the title and nothing else, this is what I have to say....
you must be new
I don't pvp much anymore after all the patches in crucible but when the beta was out every game was laggy (not as bad as release) and still is... that's just for pvp though for some reason. .. I'm always full green when playing pve

                • Basically if you use wifi, a firewall on your router and have less than 5mbps connection then you shouldn't be allowed to enter pvp.

                  • Bungie. Don't even think about not changing all of crucible to be latency based matchmaking. This is BULLSHIT what we have to deal with. The following have been "normal" during iron banner: All players red bar Red bar players taking incredible damage only to live Red bar players not showing up on radar Overall absolute shittiness. Ive lost my cool. I cannot handle this anymore.

                    • Bungie - I've quit out of 5 straight games tonight. In one, a player was running into a wall - shot him 5 times, then saw his name killing others. Last 4 games had more than half the other players warping around like a flip book missing half of its pages. Your matchmaking is ruining a wonderful game...

                      • I guess in 56k modem times everything was feeling better because your computer/console was the only machine using that connection. Today where even washing machines have wireless connections I assume that a lot of people aren't even aware that next to their Playstation/Xbox half a dozen other things are constantly cutting bandwidth and therefor causing lags. Just recently we had horrible lag during Crota until I found out that my Mac was constantly uploading my photo library to the cloud in the background, a new feature that may take days to complete but also renders even the fastest connection nearly useless for everything else especially online gaming.
