Hey, any adice to a guy making a warlock?

I just made a warlock and have him to lvl 9 on sun singer But to be honest, I am struggling with him. He is far too squishy, I am used to titans ( have two above or around 30) But mainly I would like to know some tips or tricks to help out. Any ideas guys and gals? Thanks!

  • I've mained a warlock since the beta. Sunsinger is probably the hardest class to master, but often the most fun to play. However, in order to be effective offensively it requires high discipline so you can spam 10+ nades during a super. Or if you have Claws of Ahamkara you can run high strength and medium discipline/intellect. As for it being "squishy", I can't disagree more. The only thing more bulky than a Sunsinger is defender titan. You haven't unlocked flame shield or radiant skin yet which is what the class is all about. Once you have those you'll be a grenade-spamming, solar tank.

    • Run flame shield, radiant skin, use the perks that give you the most armor and recovery. I run hopf and fusion grenades with the double grenades perk for crucible. I've actually quit using my hunter in favor of my new lock.

    • Errant Vestige posted this. Very helpful.
Don't know if you still need it, but I've been playing a Warlock since the beta. Allow me to give you some tips and tricks and tell you what I run. As a preface, I'll be writing specifically about PvE encounters. If you want some PvP recommendations, I can do that too. Voidwalker - The grenades for Voidwalker are fairly solid, but I would stray away from Scatter grenade. It's definitely the weakest of the three. Vortex grenade is useful for providing Areas of Denial (areas where enemies (melee enemies, specifically) cannot enter due to a duration effect on an AoE) and is my personal favourite choice for PvE. I've heard decent things about Axion Bolt as well, but I haven't had much luck with it. Coupling Axion Bolt with the Bloom talent is recommended. - Stay away from Blink in PvE. It can get you into a lot of trouble or make you miss jumps. It's not necessarily bad, but it's a jump more suited for PvP. I tend to use Focused Burst to help me get away from things when I'm on low health, but that's just preference. - Nova Bomb is an excellent super for clearing huge amounts of enemies, especially when coupled with certain exotics and talents. The Vortex talent provides you with another Area of Denial effect, which is always useful. Shatter is interesting, and from what I've seen of it, it just covers a larger area (which, if you couple that with Bloom, could be excellent). I would say that, of the three, Lance is the weakest of the talents, as all it does is make Nova Bomb easier to aim. - Energy Drain is a very interesting melee, allowing you to charge your grenade quicker by using your melee (which does stack with other perks on armor like Serpent's Tail). The modifying talents are also interesting, and mostly come down to preference. Surge increases weapon and movement speed, which can be helpful in niche situations in PvE, but is probably better suited for PvP. Life Steal can be excellent when paired with Bloom, as it gives you back a chunk of health and clears enemies around you. Soul Rip will charge Nova Bomb quicker, and it's fairly substantial. I would say that, of the three, Surge is the weakest in PvE. - For the talents that modify your Armor, Recovery, and Agility, I use Arcane Spirit and Divine Order to give myself more Armor and Recovery. I value Agility less than both of these stats in PvE, as you're generally not going to be utilizing it to it's full extent. - This middle tier talents is strange. Annihilate increases the explosion size of grenades and Nova Bomb, which has good synergy with Bloom. Angry Magic is fairly useless in my opinion, as compared to both of the others talents, it lacks appeal. The Hunger will increase the duration of Energy Drain, which means your grenade will charge even quicker. Coupling The Hunger with Embrace the Void and Skull of Dire Ahamkara will ensure that your grenade is almost always available. - The last tier of talents. Vortex Mastery is good, and provides more potential for Area of Denial effects, and should be coupled with Vortex for Nova Bomb, Vortex grenade, and Annihilate. Bloom is probably the best PvE perk available to Voidwalkers, and will cause enemies killed by any of your abilities to explode (think: Firefly). Bloom is the most invaluable tool a Voidwalker has, as the subclass is heavily orientated to dealing with crowds. Embrace the Void is okay, but I find it works best in PvP. Exotics: - Apotheosis Veil: an exotic that will mostly only see utility during Crota on hard mode. I don't recommend this exotic. It's okay, but there's much better. It does have a purely Discipline roll, though, which is always nice. - Light Beyond Nemesis: stay away from this helmet in PvE. It's only use is for PvP game modes where revives are enabled. Strength roll is garbage. - Skull of Dire Ahamkara: an interesting exotic that has far more useful application in PvP than PvE, but is still decent overall, ensuring that your grenade will always be up if you spec into Embrace the Void and the Hunger. I wouldn't recommend this, but it's not terrible. Considering this has Intellect as a stat, I would recommend this helmet above Apotheosis Veil. - Obsidian Mind: the Voidwalker PvE exotic, each kill with Nova Bomb will reduce the cooldown of your next Nova Bomb. Use this one if you have it, it is arguably the best exotic in the game for PvE. - Voidfang Vestments: you'll only really see these shine in PvP, where the extra Axion Bolt tracker and grenade cooldown reset on spawn will be more noticeable. For PvE, I wouldn't recommend these at all, especially considering they have a purely Strength stat roll. - Claws of Ahamkara: subclass neutral, this will provide another charge to your Energy Drain, which certainly isn't bad. This exotic sees a lot more utility with Sunsinger's in PvP, though. A decent first exotic, but there's better options. Sunsinger - The grenades for Sunsinger are just as good as the ones for Voidwalker. Again, Solar Grenades provide a great Area of Denial (especially with Gift of the Sun and Sunbreakers). Fusion Grenades are very good as well, and have an extremely high single-target damage potential when used with Radiance. I would stay away from the Firebolt grenades, as they fall under the same category as Axion Bolt; better in PvP than PvE. - The jump comes down to two choices: Focused Burst or Balanced Glide. I use the Balanced Glide now for a good midway between speed and control. - Radiance. The super often called a "crutch" due to the Fireborn talent, its potential for Orb generation and team support is often overlooked due to the widespread use of Fireborn. Song of Flame essentially provides your team with Radiance with lesser effects, allowing them to melee and throw grenades more often, but not quite as often as you. If more people took advantage of this perk during Strikes and Raids, it would be great, but I often find that when I use it, my team doesn't know what it is or don't take advantage of it. Radiant Skin is what I'd recommend most in this tree, providing a substantial decrease to incoming damage. And then we come to Fireborn. Fireborn is great for Nightfalls and some parts of raids (like Vault of Glass' conflux defense), but it shouldn't be relied upon. I find far too many Sunsingers in Raids using Fireborn and holding on to Radiance until they die. Don't do that. Use Radiance to prevent yourself from dying. Take advantage of the grenade spam to save yourself and your team. Generate Orbs. Be supportive. - Scorch, at a glance, is a fairly lackluster melee, simply igniting enemies on hit. This changes with the talents. Brimstone is okay, but it's essentially a watered down Bloom that's only on your melee. Solar Wind is one of the worst talents Warlocks have at their disposal, stay away from it. Flame Shield. Use Flame Shield. It will save your life. - For the Armor, Recovery, and Agility modifiers, I do the same as I do with Voidwalker and max out my Recovery and Armor (Arcane Spirit and Divine Order). - For the middle tier of perks, I can really only recommend Radiant Will. Coupling Radiant Will with Heart of the Praxic Fire and Radiant Skin with Fusion Grenades can result in insane single-target damage. Viking Funeral will see more utility in PvP with Touch of Flame, but for PvE I would stay away from this. Sunburst is okay, but I tend to stay away from talents that only have a chance to happen, as they're unreliable. I believe it will generate two Orbs on proc, but I can't tell you how often it procs. When I used it, it happened about 3/4 times. - The final tier of perks is weird. Touch of Flame is better suited for PvP where it will shine more. Angel of Light is a fairly useless talent overall, and I can't recommend ever using it in PvE. Gift of the Sun is invaluable, providing you with a second grenade which is fantastic. Exotics: - Apotheosis Veil: same as with Voidwalkers, this still only sees utility in the Crota fight. It does, however, have a purely Discipline stat roll, and your Discipline stat does affect how quickly your grenades cool down during Radiance. I would use this helmet out of all the other exotics for Sunsinger. - Light Beyond Nemesis: unless you're doing PvP with revives enabled, don't use this. - Heart of the Praxic Fire: the Sunsinger exotic. Pure Discipline stat roll. Cooldowns reduced further during Radiance. With max Discipline, you can essentially throw continuous grenades, providing excellent Area of Denial potential or high single-target damage. - Voidfang Vestment: this has quirky utility in PvP, as the "spawn with grenade energy" will affect Sunsingers with Gift of the Sun, providing two grenades on each spawn. I wouldn't use this in PvE, though. - Starfire Protocol: provides you with a second Fusion grenade (note: this does not stack with Gift of the Sun, and your grenade stock will max out at 2). It's certainly not bad, and it does have a pure Intellect stat roll which is nice, but Heart of the Praxic is what you really want. - Claws of Ahamkara: 2 charges for Flame Shield. This is invaluable for PvP, where Scorch becomes a one-hit kill during Radiance. For PvE, this is okay (Discipline/Strength roll is decent), but there are better options. - Sunbreakers: increase the duration of Solar Grenade. If you use Solar Grenade, I can recommend these for places like the Abyss in Crota's End, where you can provide insane Area of Denial. An Intellect stat roll is nice, too. Until you get Heart of the Praxic, I would suggest using these.
• Yeah when you're first leveling it up they are a bit squishy but it also helps when you get further in the perk tree because then you can start filling in more of that armor stat to make them withstand more damage

        • I noticed you're rocking the bad juju, gotta love it! Also I main my warlock(as you can probably tell) and once you get him really leveled up you can make him just as bulky as your Titan with defense and recovery. Granted he won't have a defender shield but he can still self res and that's pretty useful in strikes and very useful in the hard raid! Also void walker works awesome with bad juju, nova bombs forever! Happy warlocking :)

          • Okay here we go... Sunsinger good choice to start out with! The sunsingers job is to provide the team with as many orbs as possible try to focus on orb generation
or not lol but just a suggestion
they are good in night fall if you have raidiant skin or self Rez for clutch deaths or to save from a wipe. They are not squishy don't worry as you level him or her up they will get stronger and have more perks and builds to chose from. My advice go for discipline you can pump out a lot more Grenades during radiance. Void walker Do not use the three little nova bombs!!! They suck!!! If you have a lot of discipline and get the energy drain you can get Grenades crazy fast Use nova bombs for taking out a lot of enemys At once Also Deej loves warlocks

              • Pve sunsinger is the best unless you have obsidian mind and bad juju then void walker is equally as good. Pvp void walker is the way to go. I always max out armor and recovery on both subclasses for all my characters so I suggest doing that too.

                    • Just hang in there until you get Flame Shield and Radiant Skin. One you unlock those, your inner Titan should be satisfied. Like everyone else has said, a Defender Titan is the only character tougher than a Sunsinger. If you happen to have Heart of the Praxic Fire, even better. As for a Voidwalker, that will require a slightly more conservative playstyle. You can't tank as much damage, and Nova Bomb can drain about half of your health if you toss it point-blank. I recommend Life Steal, the melee ability that triggers health regeneration on a kill. (Bear in mind, that requires you to actually KILL an enemy with the melee itself to activate the bonus. If the melee doesn't kill the enemy, it basically wastes it. Unlike the Defender's melee, which doesn't activate until you kill the enemy with the punch, even if you hit them multiple times. The Voidwalker's melee will activate as soon as you hit the enemy. If the enemy doesn't die, no Life Steal. Just a wasted melee charge. It sucks.)

Embrace the void guardian. But for real, both classes are amazingly fun to use, people say self res is a crutch but they won't dare say it when you save their ass on a nightfall. Voidwalker obsidian mind+ bad juju has got to be some of the most fun I have had lately and I highly recommend it to everyone. It makes doing strikes so much easier as it clears enemies and rains orbs for your teammates. Also sunsinger can be an insane orb generator as well if you use a good build. In strikes other than nightfalls don't bother with self res and go with the increase damage resistance (forgot the name) and spam some nades for everyone
