Dev Open House - Welcome! My name is Jon Weisnewski and I work on the gameplay design team

Hello! Very happy to be part of the first Dev Open House event. My name is Jon, but to a lot of people here at Bungie I am Newsk. Through the development of Destiny I worked on the gameplay design team on a variety of things: weapons, abilities, perks, exotics, controller tuning for the various systems, rumble, feedback, damage, etc, etc. The thing I am most proud of that I worked on during Destiny development is probably the PS Vita remote play control scheme. After we shipped Destiny I transitioned into working primarily on the weapons, and now my world is a tornado of guns, stats, and perks. The most recent bundle of joy I dropped into your lap was the 1.1.1 weapon balance updates which finally released a few days ago. I'll be poking around the threads to answer questions, and will also watch this one for anything that comes up. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, and most importantly thanks for playing!   • Hey Newsk, thanks for working hard to bring me really fun gunplay. My question is regarding to the fusion rifle burst cone widening recently implemented In 1.1.1. My favorite gun in destiny (pocket infinity) I believe has been hit very hard in this change. The second and third volley fired in full auto spreads to a very harsh degree making mid range combat extremely difficult. I understand that all fusion rifles received the changes and they needed the changes due to crucible abuse. I know it is specific to ask about a single weapon, but was it intentional for this particular exotic weapon to be affected like this? And have you thought about possibly decreasing the spread on the 2nd and 3rd volley or maybe even just the 3rd volley to mitigate the high spread Thanks for answering!

    • I made this into a new thread but I am going to post here for you to look at. I understand why you didn't up the light on VOG armor. The legendary weapons would have been nice to upgrade to current lvl like exotics. Considering they are probably worth more than exotics in my opinion. Make that you need to sacrifice a fully upgraded current legendary weapon into the raid gear. Also Iron Banner is the raid for crucible. The gear is equivalent to raid but the primary's are not, they don't have any element dmg like raid. You definitely work harder for IB gear than Raid. Just wanted to know if this is being looked at and what your thoughts are?

      • Does bungie understand that they have broken the PvE due to weapon nerfs that satisfy PvP? I was playing VoG on hard and when the three people got teleported on atheon, 1 died, and the other that was trying to kill the oracles dumped a full mag from the epilogue (which was maxed out) into an oracle and the oracle did not die. We died instead. Do you call this weapon balancing? The suros took a 14.5 percent nerf! Did bungie mess up that bad when they created the suros to start with? My vex mythoclast dances like super good advice and is ineffective at killing anything. Was that my intended reward for struggling and carrying noobs through so many VoG hard raids that I cannot even count? The pulse rifle buff was needed but has the bungie team actually tried to use a red death on a level 30 cabal? It still does not kill anything! Does bungie even care that they have broken the PvE side of the game in favoritism of pleasing a few ex call of duty players who will leave destiny as soon as a November comes around that call of duty is hot again? Aside from my rant I have one serious question for bungie..... Do you think that nerfing PvE weapons based on PvP feedback is the right move and do you think your PvP players will stay dedicated to the franchise after you lose all of your hardcore dedicated PvE players?

          • You guys are doing awesome up in Bungie headquarters. Most people don't realise how hard developing a game thats not too hard or not too easy. Just one adjustment that should be made; make the Strangers Rifle a lv20 weapon, if the Strangers Rifle was a lv20 weapon it would have [b]a lot[/b] more use in PVE but its only useful in PVP at the moment. Adjustments should be made... [spoiler]thanks for the awesome game[/spoiler]

            • Add some new perks for armor. Also these can not be abused in pvp for balanced reasons. 1. Toughness, adds 2 armor stat which is increased health. 2. Lifeline, recover quicker by shaving off 15% of the regen timer. 3. Flak jacket, reduce explosive damage by 3%. A lot of mobs are aoe type so this can help out. 4. Radiant armor, adds a small over shield that is based on 10% of overall health. Can only activate against minions of darkness. 5. Vanquisher, adds extra damage melee damage based on strength stat. It makes the stat in this game more relevant rather than cooldown reducer. Maxed out str gets double damage and so on for the other stat perk. 6. Inner light, adds extra damage on supers based on intellect stat. 7. Military bearing, adds extra damage on grenades based on discipline. These are some things that could be added into the game for armor, but also for the class armor because they are a little mundane, with all due respect. Anyways hope you take some of this suggestions on improving the game. Remember feedback from your community is key to expanding this game as it has vast potential to (no pun intended) become legend.

                • Just by reading the majority of these comments..i could understand if no one at bungie ever wants to code anything for anyone again. Some of the comments and questions here about his expertise are good and im sad that they arent being answered but at the same time there im embarrassed that most of the comments reflect spoiled brats that are attacking a guy trying share insight and what he put into the games dev process..go outside people..

                  • Can you guys make primary and secondary weapon swapping by pressing down left of right thumb sticks instead of going into the menu? This would help out a lot during a fire fight :-)

I can speak for all of us when I say we are kind of sick of seeing players who just started playing getting the exotics we have been trying to get since September.
