Review of The Last Word

I've seen a lot of conflicting reviews on The Last Word, as well as a lot of people interested in obtaining it, so I thought I might as well shed some light on it. The Last Word is a primary exotic Hand Cannon available prior to the DLC but currently maxing out damage at 331, typical of legendaries and most exotics. It deals kinetic damage; and therefore has no varying effect on arc, solar, or void shielded enemies. It is also automatic, a perk which given from the start. The Last Word is debatable under its starting statistics, acting much like any ordinary legendary Hand Cannon would, but of course with its automatic firing system. The ammo capacity for The Last Word stands at 70, with 8 in the clip. This is a stationary amount, as the gun doesn't feature any upgrades for ammo. This being said, like many Hand Cannons, The Last Word is not meant to dispatch many enemies at once, but rather to use less ammo in killing said enemies. The first tier of perks for the weapon's sights are Soft Ballistics, Smart Drift Control, and Aggressive Ballistics. The first reduces recoil with penalty to impact, the second reduces recoil with penalty to range, and the third increases impact with penalties to recoil and range. It should be said that The Last Word already has very good stability, in fact, the stability can be maxed out with its perks. However, it also has very low range. However, a Hand Cannon is not a Sniper or Scout Rifle, and usually isn't used as such. It has a good impact and reload speed, and of course, a good rate of fire. The next available perk for this weapon is Hip Fire, increased accuracy while firing from the hip. It then receives the next tier, with Single Point Sling, High Caliber Rounds, and Perfect Balance. Single Point Sling allows you to switch weapons faster and move quicker while aiming, High Caliber Rounds overpenetrate targets make the weapon more difficult to handle, and Perfect Balance of course increases the weapon's stability to its max. It then has the appropriately named Last Word perk which deals bonus precision damage when hip firing. So lets talk about how this weapon should be used. The perks on The Last Word suggest it is made for accuracy. Acquiring Perfect Balance leaves it with hardly any recoil. It's also made to be a quick kill, where one doesn't have to aim to hit their mark, and hit it hard. The auto fire also makes up for what it may lack in impact compared to Thorn and Hawkmoon because it fires much more quickly and with greater accuracy. The Last Word is somewhat lacking in ammo capacity, making it better suited to small groups of enemies and one on one encounters. That being said, it is not ideal for PvP situations such as Strikes and Raids, where Thorn certainly would come out on top in the Hand Cannon department. However, The Last Word really comes into its own in the Crucible, where, its quick fire and accuracy can make it deadly even against foes wielding Auto Rifles or the Vex. It is a guaranteed kill with four body shots and or three headshots, and is most formidable in 1v1 encounters. Even in Iron Banner it is a force to be reckoned with, despite the fact that impact matters. As for aesthetic, The Last Word is a golden, somewhat Western style pistol. After pummeling you'll spin it around your finger in a display unique to the gun. So should you get The Last Word? If you receive it from the Nightfall or other activities, it's definitely worth keeping. It may not be amazing at first, but once you level it up with its perks, it's a very good gun. However, it's much more risky when you have to choose if you'll buy a gun from Xur, isn't it? It really all boils down to what you like to play. Anyone with an interest in the Crucible should definitely get their hands on it, as it performs exceptionally well there. However, it isn't a gun to trust throughout Nightfalls and Raids, as you'll spend a lot of time reloading as you try to dispatch tougher foes. So if you play mainly PvE, it may not be your best investment. Overall, The Last Word is a fun, accurate, gun that I enjoy greatly, but it lacks in ammo range. I hope you got through all that reading and you can make the decision on whether it's right for you!
