The Story Of My Awakening

I don’t remember much before the awakening. Scratch that, I don’t remember anything - unless emptiness could be considered something. Some claim to remember fragments of what they were, glimpses into a time past, but not many. I’m told that they are fleeting images, much like a dream. But if that’s the case, how do they know it’s real? Is it a desperate plea for them to try and hold on to some semblance of a better time. A time before all of...this? Truthfully though, it doesn’t matter. That life, what we were - who we were, that time has ended. There is only now: who we are - now, what we are - now. The awakening, that’s what we call it. We were nothing, no - that’s not right - we were in nothing, surrounded by emptiness, but apart from it. We were aware of ourselves, but much like a dream, time had no meaning. Each of us may have been in that abyss for a minute of a millennia - one can not say. Then suddenly we were...something. The darkness that had invaded our bodies, that was seeping into our minds was lifted. We all have our own stories, our own awakenings. It may be short, but this is my story. Out of the dark came a voice, calling to me, coaxing me, guiding me into existence. As the darkness receded and my vision cleared I was instantly overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the light around me. Shutting my eyes I lifted my hands to shield them until they became accustomed to their newfound use and when the pain had subsided and I was able to take in my surroundings, I dropped to one knee. What sprawled before me was breathtaking. The sky was a brilliant shade of blue with patches of pure white clouds filling the expanse. Behind me, a body of water stretching as far as the eye could see - a kaleidoscope of shifting colors whose wonders were hidden beneath. In front of me, the beauty of - destruction. Dropping back to reality I took in my immediate surroundings. It looks as though I were standing in the middle of a large road, but it was a broken mess. Patches of asphalt were visible through meadows of green. Bridges broken and crumbling, their ruins a reminder of civilization long lost and all around me twisted frames of steel and rust. A processional of eroded vehicles pointing the way to a massive wall. The wall was a massive, foreboding structure. Supported on massive columns of concrete it was nearly one hundred feet tall and stretched as far as the eye could see. Rectangular steel plates were positioned in grids between the columns, though many of them were dented, broken or completely missing, revealing the webbed metal structure beneath. I could only imagine what it must have looked like in it’s prime. That’s when I heard a voice. It told me that it had been looking for me; that I had been dead for a long time; that there were things I wouldn’t understand. It was right. The ghost - my ghost, as it called itself, explained much to me that day: some of which I understood, much of which I did not. It also showed me a great many things, and guided me through the wall to the tower. The tower - a story for another day. And that is the story of my awakening. The moment this life began. The moment I became aware of who I am - of what I am. My name is Angel and I will become a legend, for I...am...a GUARDIAN.
