Edit:
So in my opinion, the answer for the American economy to start achieving steady growth and create jobs isn't a single solution. For an economy to grow you need innovation. Innovation creates new markets, and helps the old ones evolve. If America once again becomes the leader in innovation then all the jobs that go over seas have to comeback because the only place to stay on the leading edge is to be where the innovation is happening.
Along with that the government must be fiscally responsible and manage the funds properly. Government funding would increase as the new markets and new technologies open new jobs and create more of the ones we already have that are needed to support the framework for innovation, the people who take these jobs would spend their money and all the sales taxes and income taxes and business taxes etc would increase with the economy, allowing the government to reinvest that same money back into its population with more affordable education, improved and updated infrastructure, funding for the many government agencies we have that are incredibly in need of funding etc. Which also creates jobs. This reinvestment in our education in particular would pay huge dividends to fill the high skill level jobs that would be created.
Basically it creates a positive feedback loop of prosperity.
"But Britton, where does all this innovation come from?" You may ask. I say look to history. What happens is, competition drives innovation. The space race is a great example. Which brings me to my next point.
NASA. This single agency which motivated and inspired generations to invent and create and think about the future, could be the leader and facilitator of the next group of innovators like it was in the 60s and 70s. It currently operates on half of a penny for every tax dollar earned. That's it. If we doubled that imagine what becomes possible. If we decided to start pushing the frontiers of human exploration once again, not only will all of society reap the benefits of the discoveries and technologies invented to accommodate that mission, but it would inspire and permeate our very culture. We could mine asteroids, and other planets, and keep bodly going. The things that would result from that are immeasurable and invaluable. Not only would it boost the economy but it would boost our humanity along with it.
Be it military, science, exploration, NASA can facilitate it.

My views are "looked down upon by people". I think that if we did communism in a good way where an unselfish and competent leader (alone, without any other government officials) started things up where everybody worked jobs, got enough food, and was "paid" the same then the leader quit leading and became a normal person everything would work. Imagine that school and college was free to everyone, you would be guaranteed retirement, food, water, and housing was free and all luxuries would be earned by your pay. If nobody had more power than another things would work well.

Less mandating on small businesses. Lower minimum wage. Become energy independent. Have a balanced budget. Probably many more but these are on the top of my head.

Lace newly printed bills with explosives That'll put a "boom" in our economy

Edited by ShpadoinkleBeks: 2/17/2015 9:59:43 PMInvest in energies that will end our dependence in any foreign source to be honest give money to nuclear research. That word is so taboo but yet the one thing giving the whole earth energy is technically nuclear powered. If we invest money into recreating the fusion the sun makes we could have untold power. Freeing concerns elsewhere. Even hydrolysis to get hydrogen needs work, but it is still more promising than wind or solar.

Clean renewable energy. The world wants to get off fossil fuels so whoever can be the first to do this effectively and cheap will be the leaders of a new industrial revolution. Kind of like how Rockefeller and Carnegie ushered in the original industrial revolution.

I'm not much of a polisci/sociology guy, so this could be off the beaten path, but my thinking would be of a high initial cost with a long term output of an overall more stable, innovative, and equal opportunistic valuing economy, with more money in individuals pockets. Eliminate post-secondary tuition fees. I don't think I have to grab the statistics (but I can if you wish) to say that more schooling = higher average pay, as well as more schooling = lower crime rate. I'm not saying more schooling causes crime not to happen either, just crime rates are higher with individuals that make less money, and individuals who don't go to college, as compared to the ones that do. This of course is littered with problems such as the scarcity of jobs, however I would also say that more people with higher education degrees would allow for more businesses to be created, and to occur. These business can thrive since more individuals will have more money to spend due to having a skilled or professional job requiring schooling/ intensive training. Just my two cents. The economy isn't fixed by traveling down a one way road though.

We need a way to force corporations to trickle down. Cap salaries for those higher up maybe.

Not a bad idea. But a lot relies on one agency, and it would take a lot of funding to get to that point of innovation (mining asteroids and bringing the materials back to earth sounds pretty expensive)

Edited by perinski93: 2/16/2015 12:26:55 AMto be honest. war. before WWII, we were in a depression but once we got involved in WWII, car manufacturers where taken over by the government to produce tanks and planes. Something similar could be done now. it would create jobs and would jump start the economy now. That, or the release of half life 3
