Favorite Dark Souls II environment?

So, there's been plenty of talk on Dark Souls II, and I notice that a lot of it centers around the disliking of areas. Amana's funhouse is artificial difficulty incarnate! Mythra's windmill palace of poison goes up into the sky to the iron keep! Aldia's keep goes up into the sky to the dragon areie but we don't see this from outside of it! And I'd like to put that all aside and ask a simple question. What's your favorite area in Dark Souls II? Not enemy wise, but location and environmental wise. Funny enough, I found myself really enjoying the vibe of the gutter. The place is so far down in the dark, and out of the way. It felt suffocating, in some manner, with all those pillars of garbage and trash, and the fact that there was so much sitting on top of it bearing down on everything. But it was quiet, peaceful even, and the undead there really did have a refuge of sorts. It was both constricting and dangerous to navigate, but a place of freedom as well. And, of course, I love the Shaded woods. There's almost no information about the place, and yet, it sits in ancient ruins and a forest shrouded in fog, overshadowed by King vendrick's palace. What was this place, and why was it so covered in darkness?

Hmmm... tough one. I love the Forest of the Fallen Giants because it is on of the larger areas in the game. With a variety of areas and traps. I love the Lost Bastille because it is the largest area in the game. It has good story behind it. Heide's Tower of Flame is just an amazingly beautiful area, even if it doesn't connect well with Majula. Aldia's Keep, Dragon Aerie, and Dragon Shine are both great areas; very beautiful and of course dragons! On my first play through, I thought Undead Crypt was terrible. But on my second I discovered the torch that lite the whole are, Damn was the a great sight. Iron Keep is great. Beautifully designed, leads to Belfry Sol with no questions, has Smelter Demon, and lava. Brightstone Cove because of, well, mainly Freja's layer. Great, refreshing, new boss fight, with a dragon above you. Earthen Peaks because it is a vertical maze. And cannot forget about Drangleic Castle. Very beautiful, with great ideas of the Golem. So, no clue on my favorite area.

I'm really not all too fond of the landscapes of Dark Souls II. It seems.. inconsistent in art style compared to Dark Souls. What irks me most is the layout of the areas in relation to each other. They seem so disconnected.

    • My favorites as far as design have to be Iron Keep and Dragon Aerie. Every time I enter Dragon Aerie, I like to just stop and drink it all in. I swear it's so beautiful and breathtaking.

        • Iron Keep was bad ass. What's more bad ass than a dark castle full of knights with awesome katanas? A bad ass dark castle full of knights with awesome katanas surounded by lava and a freakin' king that lives in the lava.

          • I'm on Dark Souls, so I would say Anor Londo. It's a beautiful change of pace.

            • The Gutter, Old Wharf, Iron Keep and the Aerie are all pretty good imo. Doesn't compare to how great the environments in the first one were though.
