Okay, so we know that light levels you beyond 20. The best way to make the most of your light, is to upgrade your gear. You will get +2 light for each defense spec you upgrade on your armor. I would recommend upgrading your level 20 rares if you don't have any legendary yet. For me, the easiest way to getting rares were by participating in the Crucible. You can also get rare gear from doing Strike playlist, but I found the Crucible to be easier since each match is only about 10mins. So every 10mins you have a chance to get 2 rare gears.
