Welcome to the Mail Sack

The very best Fridays at Bungie start with a bagel and end with a Team Meeting. Sometime between the post-lunch coma and the happy-hour buzz, music from our game rings out across the studio.{{more}} This touches off a stampede to the cavernous hall where we break for meals. During a team meeting, we dine on the fruits of our labor. The beer fridge might get looted as well.

That happens soon, so I’ll have to be brief in delivering the weekly parcel you’ve been waiting for. Before we gather en masse to survey what’s new in Destiny, we’ll open the Sack.

Ragnarok174  Are we there yet?
You’ll know when we’re there, but we hope you’ll appreciate the scenic stops we make along the way. Personally, I love those community-focused moments. It’s always exciting to hover an eager finger over that shiny red button for Bungie.net labeled “Go Live.” This game has us all pretty excited, and it’s always awesome to welcome our closest friends into the fold to share a little more.

If you have no idea what we’re talking about, Welcome to the Frontier.

rennagang  Who do you fear most on the Bungie team?
This will be a tough question to answer. Out team is staffed with deadly assassins who have mastered every art and science of the known universe. Making this choice is a contemplation of one’s own weaknesses as much as another’s strength. When I look deep inside the dark recesses of my mind where I dare not go, I see Urk staring back at me, like a bizarre reflection of my ginger self.

Let’s see who makes the skin crawl on our panelists.

None of you understand.  I'm not locked up in here with them.  They're locked up in here with me.
John Hopson, User Research Lead

The only possible answer is Jerome.
Alexis Haraux, Engineer

I fear Achronos.  His hammer of justice is swift and strong.  Did you think the Banhammer wasn’t an actual, physical object?
Alex Loret de Mola, Engineer

I do try to walk quietly when walking behind Harold.
Travis Pijut, Test Engineer

I have no doubt that Harold could make sure that nobody would ever find your body if he wanted you gone.
Tom Gioconda, Engineer

Harold. No question. I’ve seen him bench… cars.
John Stvan, Graphic Designer

DeeJ, because he probably twists my Mail Sack answers to say whatever he wants.  Plus, he is by far the most devilishly sexy manager of any community known to the Internet.
Jake Lauer, Web Development Engineer

Chucky, the engineering lead, but only because when you hear from him it’s because something is horribly broken. (We love you Chucky!)
Brendan Walker, Engineer

Raspy the Tiger. During crunch, he speaks to me, audibly.
Leland Dantzler, Tester

I. FEAR. NO. MAN.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

CraftingGeek What kind of names are the characters are going to have in Destiny?
They’ll have names like CraftingGeek, and Arbitor5, and ChorrizoTapatio. There will be no characters in this game more important than you. We’ve always believed that “the player is the most important actor…” and that in turn means the gamers in the Bungie community will be vital to Destiny.

POKEY CLYDE  What do you do to better yourself?
If you’re not a fitness junkie, there are bunches of people stalking these halls who go well out of their way to make you feel like a total slacker. You see them leaving the showers with that strut in their gait, as if to say, “Yeah, I just worked out. How did you spend your lunch hour?”

I saw a man doing one-armed pull ups on the LED-emblazed bar in the kitchen yesterday, while my idle hand guiltily clutched a piece of junk food I had pilfered from the cupboard. That’s just one way our people strive to level up. Here are some others:

Be awesome.
John Stvan, Graphic Designer

Practice all the things! I have a lot of hobbies that I don’t want to atrophy, so I make sure to give each of them some time each week.
Jake Lauer, Web Development Engineer

Exercise. Find time to read. Learn new skills. Try new foods.
Travis Pijut, Test Engineer

Are you saying I have a problem?  You think you're better than me?
Rahsaan Green, Sandbox Test Engineer

Stop and listen to other people’s opinions.  I have a personal goal of not assuming that my beliefs are necessarily the right ones.
Alex Loret de Mola, Engineer

I try to do some sort of exercise five or six times a week. I only have one body, and want to take care of it.
Evan Nikolich, Designer

I like to write and shoot short films.  I try to pick some aspect as a challenge and do something I haven’t done before or don’t normally get to do at work. It’s a great way to keep stretching and growing as a visual story teller.
Kurt Nellis, Technical Cinematic Lead

Try to turn unknown unknowns into known unknowns.
Brendan Walker, Engineer

Everything. Nothing?  I don’t really understand the question.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

Me neither, Chris. We should really go for a walk outside.

ChorrizoTapatio  I saw on your careers page there is an opening for "Raid Designer" and the very last requirement is as follows:  Max level character with significant end game Player versus Environment experience in a popular online game.  Could you please shed a little more light on this position?
The designer who wins this role will work in lock-step with Luke Smith. As such, some of the nice-to-have skills that didn’t make the cut of the listing include a thick skin, a vivid imagination, an almost impractical vocabulary, and a heart for fierce debate. This is what else he seeks in a collaborator on deep adventures:

If names like Ragnaros, Vaelastrasz, Trakanon and Veeshan are more to you than just letters on a page -- and you meet the job description’s requirements -- we want to hear from you.
Luke Smith, Design Lead, Scarab Lord

EZcompany2ndsqd  What do you miss most about where you came from before coming to Bungie?
Like the gold rushes of old, it’s true that many of us left past lives behind to migrate west and seek our fortunes in the land of Bungie. Were you to ask a member of our team about their new destiny, their answer would invariably be: I regret nothing! That doesn’t mean we’re not sentimental (and don’t ever get me started on the subject of deep dish pizza). These are a few of our favorite things – the things we miss the most.

The babies I’ve fathered.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

Being 15 minutes away from work.
Kevin Hart, Artist

Cheese.
Alexis Haraux, Engineer, Parisian

The Charles River that divides the cities of Cambridge and Boston. I use to run along the river a couple times a week, and sometimes catch a sweet sun rise.
Evan Nikolich, Designer

I faintly remember there being some large yellow day-star in the sky.
David Johnson, Engineer

Canada.
Tyson Green, Staff Designer

Buffalo Wings from upstate New York.
Kurt Nellis, Technical Cinematic Lead

My youth!
Lorraine McLees, Senior Graphic Designer

Nothing… since I’m from here.
Alex Gendron, Tester

Tigerman  What kind of things can Guardians do in The Last City, other than mill around and socialize?
The Tower is a friendly and familiar place to regroup, rearm, and repair before heading out on your next great adventure. As a Guardian, the Tower is a refuge – a sanctuary – but it is also bustling with all the activities you would expect to find in the last safe city on Earth.

Krieger  Switch places with anyone you want for a day, who would it be and what would you do?
I always wanted to be a cop for just one day, and I would spend the whole time behind the wheel with the sirens screaming. I bet I could thread traffic on the 405 like a piece of fishing line though the eye of a needle. Our panel would play a game of turnabout thusly.

I’d trade with Colin Kaepernick on the day of the most recent Super Bowl.  During that last drive, I would have ran the ball in myself on 4th down, and then basked in the glory of being voted Super Bowl MVP.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

Chris Owens, so I could understand how to better troll others.
Alex Gendron, Tester

Felix Baumgartner, the guy who dove from orbit. That would be insane.
Kevin Hart, Artist

I’d be a bigwig oil magnate and release the hidden plans for a peanut butter powered engine to the internet.
Travis Pijut, Test Engineer

Goku, and I would go to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber so I could be Goku for a year.
Alexis Haraux, Engineer

I would switch places with Batman and I would punch criminals in their faces.
Joey Gibbs, Broducer

Window washer on the Burj Khalifa.
Leland Dantzler, Tester

I’d like to live as the Mars Curiosity Rover for a day and just see, with my own eyes, what the sunrise and sunset on Mars look like from the surface
Lorraine McLees, Senior Graphic Designer

I’d switch with DeeJ, and the twitter feed would never be the same.
John Stvan, Graphic Designer

And not a one of us would survive that day, John.

Oleg The Great  Is Destiny the only game Bungie is working on?
All roads lead to Destiny.

Arbitor5  Does Bungie speak to NASA a lot? You're always keeping us updated with their projects and it seems that you chat quite a bit?
We don’t speak to NASA, they speak to us. We’re pretty star struck, and they continue to be a constant source of inspiration for us.

Old Monarch  Do you have any Bungie tradition for employee birthdays?

I guess I’ll find out on Tuesday.
Tom Gioconda, Engineer

Someone shouts, “HEY EVERYBODY! IT’S __________’s BIRTHDAY!  Then comes clapping.  Then comes embarrassment.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

*clapclapclap*
Jake Lauer, Web Development Engineer

S-somebody talked!
Michael Jelley, Engineer

They’re allowed to be unshackled from their desks for five whole minutes.
David Johnson, Engineer

Very grizzled ancients may receive a call from the ghastly choir—a group of other ancients in another room on speakerphone, singing Happy Birthday in the deadest monotone.
Tyson Green, Staff Designer

DE4THINC4RN4TE  Is it true that Game Informer will have some new Destiny details in their next issue?
Chris Butcher and Pete Parsons did an interview for Game Informer’s PS4 cover issue, and we bolstered their words with a handful of new assets. You should get yourself a copy. As much as you may like to get all of your Destiny news right here on Bungie.net, we do like to invite other people to join the chorus, and Game Informer has a lovely singing voice.

Camnator  Do you understand how lame you are?
Despite all the bluster on this here blog, you won’t find our people trying to convince you that they’re rock stars. Help me prove this point, panel. You understand all too well how lame you are.

No I’m doesn’t.
John Stvan, Graphic Designer

Considering we all slow-clap every mistake made around the office, I think we have a pretty good grasp.
Jake Lauer, Web Development Engineer

Not only do I understand it, but I revel in it.  Own your lameness.  OWN IT!
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

Yes? Wait, no. I’m confused, can we start over?
Travis Pijut, Test Engineer

I am hella lame, but have never attempted a precise measurement of the magnitude of my lameness.
Rahsaan Green, Sandbox Test Engineer

My Mom reminds me every day.
Alex Loret de Mola, Engineer

I think we’re more self critical than our external critics could ever hope to be.
Tom Gioconda, Engineer

Game development has a magical way of grinding humility into you.
Brendan Walker, Engineer

That would make a great fortune cookie.
Josh Eash, Release Manager

Is that a trick question?
Alex Gendron, Tester

Does anybody truly understand their lameness?
Michael Jelley, Engineer

If by lame you mean amazing, then yes.
Joey Gibbs, Broducer

Dark Delta 6  What do you think of the community's reaction with Destiny so far?
You honor us with your enthusiasm, humble us with your dedication, astound us with your creativity, amaze us with your attention to detail, and frighten us with your ability to let your imaginations drive you. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Keep dreaming, and we’ll do our damndest to measure up.

zh515  Who uses Grognok?
We’re glad you asked. We’ve seen some folks incorrectly assume that Grognok is, in fact, the name of our game engine. It’s not. Grognok is actually a world-building tool – just one single component of the technological terror we’ve constructed to ensure Destiny will become a fully operational battle station. Community guys like myself know not the euphoria of meddling with the forces that shape the universe. Who among you is entrusted with such power?

The creators of worlds.
John Stvan, Graphic Designer

Grognok uses you.
David Johnson, Engineer

Being a world designer, I use it every day.
Evan Nikolich, Designer

I used Grognok once. Grognok was not amused.
Joey Gibbs, Broducer

Make sure to consult your doctor before using Grognok. There may be side effects, such as increased excitement over cool stuff that just happened on your screen. You may also experience increased creative energy. Using Grognok with Bonobo may compound these symptoms. Productivity may ensue. Stop using Grognok if you feel lightheaded with power.
Lorraine McLees, Senior Graphic Designer

Zubb The Zombie  After about an hour or two digging around I gave up searching. At what time should I be camped out in front of my TV watching E3 for your slot.
You’re already parked in the perfect place to capture every minute of the show. Watch the front page. Follow each other’s leads on the forums. Let the sweet tweets wash over you like a high tide of inside information. No one who ever paid attention to Bungie.net ever felt left out of what we were unleashing on the world.

Mighty_Sandwich  Will this year's E3 presentation leave us as awestruck as the Halo 2 demo featured at E3 2003?
No pressure!

dmg04  Will you be at PAX this year?
We know what you’re really asking. “Will Destiny be at PAX this year?” I’m afraid I can’t answer that question. What I can promise is that you’ll undoubtedly be seeing Bungie faces at PAX this year. It’s right in our backyard, and we love a good party attended by gamers.

Sure will.  Feel free to walk up to me and give me compliments and free stuffs.
Chris Owens, Test Engineer

As a consumer.
Kevin Hart, Artist

Only if you send your four day pass to our studio.
Alexis Haraux, Engineer

Yep, handing out cookies as always!  Don’t forget to donate to Child’s Play by acquiring a cookie from the Cookie Brigade.  And remember, we don’t sell them: we give cookies and humbly accept donations.
Alex Loret de Mola, Engineer

Wait, what?  Are PAX tickets on sale?
David Johnson, Engineer

I usually only just go to see the interesting panels.
Tom Gioconda, Engineer

That depends. Is your mom going?
Joey Gibbs, Broducer

Charlemagne  Do you think you'll run out of Mail Sack titles eventually?
The day we run out of Mail Sack titles is the day you run out of Mail Sack questions. You want to know what it’s like to make this game. We want to talk about what it’s like to make this game. On a long enough timeline, we’ll all know what it’s like to play it together. The Mail Sack is our bridge to that glorious day, and to each other. It will continue for at least as long as they let me drive the blogmobile on Bungie.net.

Joey’s about to play our song, so I have to run. I’d love to sneak you in to watch, but we’re sticklers for what’s worthy of being seen by your eyes. Just know that plans are underway to create some more scenery for you to enjoy on this adventure, and that you’ll have a front row seat when it arrives.
