Doctors oppose marijuana legalization, call weed a "dangerous drug" Opinions/thoughts?

Looks like America just joined the Dutch (who are getting rid of some of their coffee shops and making weed with more than 15 percent THC illegal to sell in "coffee shops"). Thoughts? Linky You have to click on the marijuana as medicine statement under 2013 to see the psychiatrists' view on weed If you're too lazy to click on the American Psychiatric Association's statement: "• There is no current scientific evidence that marijuana is in any way beneficial for the treatment of any psychiatric disorder. In contrast, current evidence supports, at minimum, a strong association of cannabis use with the onset of psychiatric disorders. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to harm, given the effects of cannabis on neurological development. • Further research on the use of cannabis-derived substances as medicine should be encouraged and facilitated by the federal government. The adverse effects of marijuana, including, but not limited to, the likelihood of addiction, must be simultaneously studied. • Policy and practice surrounding cannabis-derived substances should not be altered until sufficient clinical evidence supports such changes. • If scientific evidence supports the use of cannabis-derived substances to treat specific conditions, the medication should be subject to the approval process of the FDA. Regarding state initiatives to authorize the use of marijuana for medical purposes: • Medical treatment should be evidence-based and determined by professional standards of care; it should not be authorized by ballot initiatives. • No medication approved by the FDA is smoked. Marijuana that is dispensed under a state-authorized program is not a specific product with controlled dosages. The buyer has no way of knowing the strength or purity of the product, as cannabis lacks the quality control of FDA-approved medicines. • Prescribers and patients should be aware that the dosage administered by smoking is related to the depth and duration of the inhalation, and therefore difficult to standardize. The content and potency of various cannabinoids contained in marijuana can also vary, making dose standardization a challenging task. • Physicians who recommend use of smoked marijuana for “medical” purposes should be fully aware of the risks and liabilities inherent in doing so. AUTHORS: Tauheed Zaman, M.D. Richard N. Rosenthal, M.D. John A. Renner, Jr., M.D. Herbert D. Kleber, M.D. Robert Milin, M.D. " Discuss.

    • As harmful as weed might be, if at all, it is nowhere near as dangerous as a lot of prescription drugs. It would be a great substitute for the more dangerous drugs like Xanax.

      • You (plural) have no business telling me what I can do or put in my body that does not negatively affect someone else's life, liberty, or property. Similarly, I have no right to tell you what to do when that action does not negatively affect others life, liberty, or property. If one wants to ingest something that is harmful only to himself, that is his business alone.

The fact that marijuana is illegal isn't much of a deterrent; a decent dealer and $30, and you're set. The amount of jobs that could be created from growing the plant, plus the money the US government could make from taxing it like cigarettes or alcohol, is simply too much to ignore. And denying that marijuana is beneficial in any way is justified only by bias and propaganda, which is a shitty excuse to begin with. And that is my view on the subject. EDIT: Listen to Mulder, guys.

              • This may sound rude, but the AMA's opinion about marijuana legalization is totally irrelevant. Legalization is not about health. It is about allowing people the freedom to make choices about what they do to their own bodies. Besides, if the AMA wants to spend its time and money trying to have dangerous substances made illegal, it should concentrate on added sugar in processed foods and other unhealthy eating habits, which kills more people per year than alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs combined. I do not use marijuana, but I firmly supported legalization and voted in favor of Initiative 502 here in Washington State.

                      • It's still not valid in the formal setting since we have a lack of data to support using it as a prescribed drug. However, it is a lot less nasty than many antidepressants and antipsychotics. ...and that lack of formal data is because of laws, so maybe we should be doing research in Colorado.

                                  • You know where I stand on the subject. THC has a lot of uses as an everyday supplement for people who suffer various ailments. It is prescribed by doctors and distributed by hospitals. Weed is a source of THC. Dose regulation only needs to apply to minimum dosage because it isn't possible to get enough THC in weed to kill someone.

If it is ever federally legalized than it be a big blow to depression pill sales around the country. Cannabis is a better, less addictive, less dangerous alternative to depression medication. That's a fact.

                                      • The reality of the situation, and the real issue, is that alcohol, and tobacco which are worse health wise, are legal, while marijuana isnt. Fast food is bad for you, and doctors will agree, but you dont see them pushing for that to be illegal do you? It should be the persons choice, and the prohibition of marijuana was large in part due to racially motivated opinions. Legalization will change many things about our society on many different levels, and the pros outweigh the cons.
