Broken Machine

Part 2 ---> http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/91444511/0/0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Hunters!" He shouts. "Explorers, survivors, Masters of the Frontier." Offering praise? It was probable. But I was wrong, for it never occurred to me what he would possibly do. There was a certain mockery to his tone. A hint of hate. The Hunters of course, the wild type of Guardian's they were, were cheering and undeniably proud of this reaffirmation of their status. "But like dogs, they are drawn to the scent of reward." The cheer immediately stopped. "Greedy beyond measure, Avarice is the hallmark of these Guardians. Driven by what lies ahead, they care not for you, but for themselves, and the sake of their own benefit." It was by now that I knew at least one of them would rebuke these harsh and uncalled for statements. I only hope it would have been another. Cayde-6 stepped forward to defend his title, and that of his fellow brothers and sisters, of Hunter. "We may not be great Historians like the Warlocks, or strong walls like the Titans, but we are always there. We're the ones who expanded our borders when the Darkness rolled over us. We're the ones who dared to venture into the unknown and make it safer for the rest. We are worthy of that, which is more than I can say for you." This merely fanned the fire of the furnace. While Cayde said this, his opponent had an expression that made me feel disgusted. He appeared to revel in the tension. With a cruel desire, and that desire was satiated. And by now a sizeable crowd had gathered at the centre of the plaza. "Worthy? You of all Hunters should not use that term lightly. How could YOU be worthy? You are all killers, thieves. Vandals." Great anger within Cayde was unleashed at that moment. "HOW DARE YOU CALL US THAT!" he thundered. The rest were so fearful, not for themselves, but for the one who insulted the most fiery of Hunters. They didn't utter a word, nor a breath, that might invoke more anger. "I dare, for I KNOW. What was it like Cayde? What did it feel like, when she was dying in your arms?" Cayde was brought back by this. "What are you talking about?" He knew not what he was referring to, but I did. He continued, "You talk of worth and you imply honour drives your actions. Where was your worth then Cayde? Where was your honour then? A Baron of the Fallen House of Exile, who long ago helped this Hunter survive an overwhelming Hive force. She was mortally wounded, needing help, but none was offered. Except in the form of a bullet." "No, I didn't do that. I wouldn't." -"How would you know? Your memory is not as...complete, as it one was, isn't it Cayde-6?" "I wouldn't do that. I DIDN'T!" -"It is no surprise you were made to stay in the Tower, if you were allowed leave, who knows how much worse the situation could get?" -"I didn't do that...did I? I...don't remember..." Cayde replied in a weak, almost fragile voice. But before he could finish his sentence, the cruel voice rebuked, "What's wrong Cayde? Have my words broken through, or do you see something too?" There was a dark tone beneath those words, a cold wave rushed up my spine at the hearing of them. Cayde suddenly looked up, wide eyed with his mouthpiece open. "I..." He wanted to say something, but he couldn't, as if something was stopping him. While he was frozen in awe, his opponent stood tall, grinning with an evil flame."There is only one thing that drives you Cayde, and it has driven you since the moment of your awakening. Gaze upon your Vanguard, Hunters! This is the example you all follow. Honour indeed. If honour was present that day, the Fallen would be a great deal more grateful. Now crawl back into the Tower you pathetic waste of metal, back where you can dream of your great adventures." Cayde was broken, shattered, he was in a state of shock, he still had that same expression on his face, wide eyed and open mouthed. And with that he slowly walked back to the Vanguard Hall. The Exo still stood in the centre, burning with pride. But he did not end it with the Hunters. He desired more.
