Ships: adding a new Layer of Gameplay

There is no question that the combat & general gameplay of Destiny so far has been smooth, enjoyable & overall well done (For those suffering from constant disconnects, my apologies for your misfortune.) However, one concern from players has been repetition becoming taxing on the gaming experience. With the Dark Below, we'll have some additional content to keep us busy for the next few months (weeks for some of us,) but here's an idea for down the road to mix things up. To veer away from the FPS gameplay along a second parallel path, what would you think of introducing interplanetary flight zones for exploration, PvP & random events? Right now ships hold nothing more than an aesthetic value you can appreciate for just a moment as you wait on a loading screen; only catching a glance of what your teammates are sporting. Looking past painted pixels, there is potential for players to further appreciate their ships & have them stick out with distinction on a whole new level. As you read on, keep in mind the gameplay style similar to StarFox 64 on the All-range mode maps. What I'd like to do is have the ability to get in the pilot seat and partake in a variety of activities. For Starters, you could have one free range area for exploration in the Reef (16 player server limit, as it already is.) The idea would be we've waged war & regained a foothold of our inner solar system; now it's time to keep pressing the front lines and take the fight to the enemies on the frontier long lost to the darkness. It would be an open area of space (simple physics) where you may fly around, engage in combat with enemy ships, complete patrols with the occasional all out dog fight of a public event. Specks of floating debris here and there could hold a hidden cache of a chest containing either random materials from one of the four planets or as forerunner of incorporating a new fifth crafting material. As the Queen comes to the tower, she can give bounties for a variety of activities that could be held in this zone along with other flight scenarios. Beyond Exploration & basic PvE, you could have a chance for relatively quick ship battles to take place while in transit from one planet to the next. Say you leave the tower with your fireteam & head to Mars. Along the way to your strike, you are intercepted by a cabal cruiser. A dozen fighters zoom out of the mother ship & you have to defeat both the cruiser & its fighters to proceed. The rewards would be a possible engram (slightly greater chance than opening a chest), glimmer, and materials. If you chose to run away, you may retreat back to Earth, but with no reward gain; if you proceed back out to Mars, there's another chance of being intercepted. PvP would start with one or two maps, one in Earth's orbit, the other out in the Reef. Both would be standard dog fights, one team based 6v6 or 8v8, the other a 6 man free for all. I'd even be interested in a scenario where you have 4 two-man teams; call it wingmen. Last but not least would be the pinnacle of air to air combat, the weekly aerial event. For PvE, raids are currently the only source fun with a 6 man fireteam. Some of us wish there was something similar to the nightfall or weekly that could be completed with more than the standard trio. This event would be it. Do not expect to be victorious if you intend on flying around aimlessly firing at enemy ships. You're going against an Armada with six ships and you're only chance is to work together to survive & prevail. With the amount of enemies you're going against (with no wipes) expect to be engaged in non stop fighting for 35-45 minutes. If you manage to defeat the oncoming threat, you and your teammates will be rewarded with ascended materials, rep, & possibly exotics or ship parts; which brings me to the next section... To make this all work, either changes need to be applied to ships already in use, or a new tier of superior models would be introduced. Every ship would have 4 stats & 3 mod slots: Ship Stats -Durability: How much your damage your rig can take before you're blasted into spacedust; your ship's healthbar. -Speed: Top Speed & Acceleration. -Mobility: How well your ship handles. -Firepower: Your ships' built in capability to power & support your cannons (more power, more damage) Examples: -You could have a ship with top speed, but poor mobility, resulting in larger arcs for turns, and more haphazard movements when changing directions abruptly; but you'd be able to get out of dodge in an instant. -Or you could have poor speed and mobility, but top durability & high firepower. This would make your ship operate like a WW2 bomber; a floating fortress packing a punch, but vulnerable to ships that are more agile and swift. -(I could go on, but I'll round it off with a 3rd example) Try having above average speed and mobility, but your durability & power is below average. In the hands of an experienced guardian, you cannot be out maneuvered, but you better keep maneuvering as a few hits will make you history; plus you'll find yourself making more frequent passes to get the damage in on your target. Ship Mod Equipment These are items that can be incorporated into the loot system however you see fit Bungie, but their purpose would be to allow the player to customize how they choose to play (similar to how class tree choices affect your gameplay style.) -Cannons: Different cannons can fire different ways. Some fire a nonstop barrage of smaller rounds, others charge for a large attack or fire at a steady, train-chugging-along, rate. Some are mounted to the sides like Gatling guns, or you have one large one like a tank. Different damage archetypes would be present here as well (void, solar, arc, kinetic.) You could even go as far as having mods similar to weapons; Eg. you have high rate of fire, low impact cannons that level up to have projectiles track target to a degree (like those god damn guns vandals use.) Another Eg. would be having projectiles that penetrate targets. -Deflectors: Whereas durability is your ship's healthbar, this is your over-shield. Your shield regenerates after a period of not getting shot. Your durability does not replenish until either A) You win the instance B) You are destroyed, which leaves another two options: 1) Your teammate flies by and gives you a 'jump' bringing you back to half durability or 2) You all are destroyed: In Pvp, you'd respawn. In PvE explore you respawn with half durability. In random interplanetary interceptions, you wipe, you return to Earth's orbit with half durability. In the Weekly, death brings you back to Earth's orbit with half durability (Someone was nice enough to Tow you) where you must repair your ships with the shipwright before attempting the weekly again. Deflectors can have armor mods too, similar to ultras' arc, void, solar & even have kinetic shields. Other mods could affect recharge rate & other variables. -Utility Hardware: Beyond dealing damage & mitigating it, this is your slot to mod your ship for something special; speed brakes, laser guide for your turret(s), grappling hook to temporarily ensure you keep behind your target, afterburners to give you a sudden boost of momentum, screen overlay that highlights friendly & enemy targets, whatever you can think of! As far as ship repairs goes, you can dismantle ships you don't use for ship parts, have parts drop, or trade in marks for parts. In conclusion, I'm not trying to pull away from the FPS experience (though I kinda am.) This is designed to add another level of competitive gameplay I'd think me & my fellow gamers would enjoy as a refreshing break from continuous FPS combat. By switching it up a little bit, the 'grind' some players are feeling should dissipate to a degree. Thank you. & I just want to let you know..Good Luck, we're all counting on you.

  • I totally agree. I jist made a post about this too. It would open so much more in the world of Destiny. Read my post "Destiny Dogfighting" and you will see we share similar ideas although you have gone into far greater detail as to the workings of it. It sure would have been great to fight an intense battle just to board Oryx's ship. Or use your ghost to call in a starfighter strike on a Walker that just dropped in front of you. The idea of space combat doesn't only open up gameplay, but it could also be used to open up the story of Destiny. Ever wonder why the Fallen and others were so formidable in space? Be great to find out first hand!

  • I Actually Made A Post SIMILAR (Not Exactly This) To This, And I Made 3 Pretty Valid Point About The Shipwright And Ships, You should Check It Out. BUT ANYWAYS, Many Good Points Were Made Here, I Agree With ALL Of Them, I Love How Posts Like This Get Lots Of Attention

Bungie could make the ships like starwars battlefront 1 or 2 where you had to take down the enemy command ship from either the inside by docking or the outside by bombing Certain systems

          • While I don't personally care about ship combat...this is a pretty damn good and well thought-out idea. Too late for this game, but it's got potential for sequels.

            • There was a great game I had for the original xbox that was ~open world. Some fantasy - anime thing. At one point you got an NPC in your party who had a boatblimp you flew around in to load new parts of the world. Randomly, a Galaga style enemy attack would happen. Not always, but sometimes. It was hilariously awesome.

            • While I appreciate your overall scope.. I believe it is too in depth for this current game. Basically, the addition you are pitching would have to add more content, interface, items, etc.. Which would open a gateway to more bugs and problems... I don't think this game even has enough life to implement it prior to the launch of D2 (unless something similar is already fleshed out and withheld)
