As far as I can tell, Going to Orbit is a pointless load screen for eye candy's sake. Why not instead of Go To Orbit, you hold the button to bring up the exact same menu? Skip a load screen (of which there are a large number of, half of which being Going To Orbit) in the process?
Edit: To those saying it's a lobby and for fireteams, I'm not saying get rid of the functionality of Go To Orbit, I'm just saying lose the load screen and backdrop, and just have it a menu you can access straight away by using the same Press and Hold that we use now. No one's instanced 'physically' that you invite while you're in Orbit now, so there's no worry about what inviting people to your Fireteam and Party might be like. It would change nothing

My theory on the Orbit system is that like others are saying it is a "lobby". This is necessary because it gives them 1 server that can handle all the players connecting to the game. When you select a destination and we see the loading screen, I am assuming that the 1 server we are on sends us to a machine called a Load Balancer. The Load Balancer picks a server running your selected destination and has the lowest load and/or best network connection. This helps with the complete instancing of all areas, and helps them keep lag to a minimum. When the load times are taking longer I assume it is the Load Balancer taking a bit longer to find a proper server. Another thing I think they are able to do because of this setup, is slowly update/patch the game without taking all the servers down. Because of this Load Balancer set up they can shut off 1 server sending all players to orbit. The Load Balancer wont see the server anymore so wont try to send any player to it. Bungie can then update the server while everyone plays on the other ones, then turn the server back on and rinse and repeat till all the servers are up and running. To address the OP's edit: No one is "instanced" physically period as that would be playing on LAN. The issue with having Fireteams and Parties join you directly is that it would by pass the server selection process. Having one or two groups do this wouldn't cause to much of an issue, but if everyone did this it would increase the server load significantly and would cause more lag.

Don't you want to look at your cool ship you know the one you cannot pilot and fly! lol
-
When the guardians gain the ability to teleport from planet to planet instantly like the Vex is the day the "Go to Orbit" functionality will vanish.
-
Maybe post this in Feedback instead of Destiny. Might get seen better there.
-
It's basically a load screen, every place you go is an instance and you can get to your profile so I don't see the issue.
-
I agree. Why do I need to go into Orbit to go from the tower to Cosmodrome?
-
I like the orbit. I would rather see a "Go To Tower" button implemented instead for when you are in game.
-
Edited by GalaxySpider: 9/30/2014 9:38:55 PMIt's a lobby if in case you haven't noticed it yet. And I think it's a better alternative to getting shot or -blam!-ed up in the actual game/missions.
-
But.... my jumpship.....
-
Yeah the fact that you have to load up twice to do anything gets old real fast. It kind of ruined the continuity for the story missions too since you had to go to orbit and then load up the next mission manually.
-
It's an easy way to form fireteams. Plus it just looks cool! Beats staring at a loading screen
-
Everything should be centered around the tower, a/k/a the social area. Have the hangar be the launch point for missions. Its where you park your ship. Guardians supposedly "live" at the tower so that should be our starting point whenever we launch the game.

Edited by Space Monkey 8: 9/30/2014 7:35:09 AMI defitnetly agree with this. All you are doing by going to orbit is loading a menu. You end up having to load twice to do anything. It its just a waste of time. Also getting and turning in bounties should not require going to tower. You end up wasting so much time to continue playing. You end up with 4 load screen one to go to orbit one for selecting tower another to go to orbit again then another for whatever you choose. Same goes for cryptarch. Having to go through 4 loadscreens when you only need go through one or none is just bad design decision.

Only place to gather a party.
-
Orbit is actually also needed to put AFK players there instead of letting them waste space and bandwith in any other location.
-
Yea, who needs pregame lobbies anyways? Anybody that played gta5 can tell you it's not a hassle one bit to continually leave and join lobbies trying to find one that has room for you to invite friends. And when you finally find one, it fills up while you're sending out invites. But oh well, just quit and join 7 more times before you finally have a team. OOORRRR.... we realize that going to orbit is completely necessity. Could you imagine trying to get a raid team together without a pregame lobby?
-
Orbit is a lobby for forming fireteams. You try and get teams of 6 together in the tower.
-
My friend. This is he BIGGEST problem with destiny right now. If they fix this, all other problems won't even matter.

Destiny is such a mess
-
Actually, I'm betting it has to do with server searching and queuing. I don't mind since you get to show off your ships and plan things out where everyone isn't distracted.
-
I actually agree lmfao
-
I concur.
-
Orbit just extends game time. So does the tower. It makes the game seem much longer than it actually is
-
I think it creates a more immersive experience. If you really wanted to, this game could be a mathematical game about increasing your stats on a spreadsheet but it's not.

i love the orbit, dont take it away from me :'(
