  • Yes, it's called salary and overtime-exempt employee classifications. I just left work on a Sunday on a holiday weekend, in fact. No pay for that, just one of the obligations to my job and the product I create (hint hint, little free-dlc metaphor there :)

  • That's actually a common thing to do in mmo's. Give out a special hat around Christmas, or a scythe for Halloween, etc. Something you can only get if you were playing that day, but doesn't offer a huge advantage or anything. Or a special Halloween themed mission only on Halloween. You know, simple stuff like that

  • They work on it in advance and patch it in. No biggie.

  • It doesn't even take much time, remember when the skyrim developers were given one week to do whatever they wanted? They ended up coding a bunch of stuff.

  • Yeah, that'd be a pretty cool thing for bungie to do.

  • Why do companies sponsor charity organizations? It gets their name out there, and allows them to advertise their product while also doing a nice thing for humanity. By providing a free shader or class item every once in a while, Bungie could decrease player retention and increase appreciation for their product.

  • Actually, the biggest reason is a tax break, the pr is just a nice after effect. But yeah, it's good to give loyal fans a little service like that, and it keeps people playing your game, pots you back in the headlines, etc.

  • My question was directed at the OP for complaining. Thank you for your service though, are you combat or operations?

  • I didn't mean to complain, and I apologize if it came across that way. My point was that I don't want this going the same direction CoD has with their microtransactions. (Activision is partnered with Bungie, so this IS a risk.) Paying 2.50 for gun camos, you can't earn certain weapons, you have to pay 5.00 to get that gun, etc. And by INSTEAD giving out a free class item or shader every once in a great while, Bungie can decrease player retention while increasing player appreciation. It also provides players with something cool to show off to new guardians.

Submarines. So mostly Intel gathering. There's potential combat, but avoiding world war 3 would be preferred, lol. But to be on topic, the main reason this discussion comes up is that extra content used to be free. Before consoles had internet marketplaces, PCs typically got regular content updates for free.

  • Oh ok, being a single player gamer most of my time I never had such benefits. My preference is buy it once and pay for Dev labor, buy it again when they revolutionize their own mechanics. Like Megaman legends 1-2 my favorite ps1 game, Onimusha 1-3 was my favorite ps2 game(ignoring Onimusha 4 exists), for ps3 I did like infamous but was sad infamous 3 was ps4. I'm only getting ps4 for destiny and then getting the older ps4 games on sale. I wish infamous 3 was like a hybrid between Lichdom, Star Wars kotor, infamous 2 and warframe. I liked the idea of city of Heroes/dco/marvel but hate the execution.

I have before, just a few hours here and there due to the fact I was given a job and feel that my boss should get something in return for the effort he put in to make keeping us employed possible. In saying that though, I wouldn't be doing anything like that for a multi-national company with billions of dollars. Either way the game will make enormous profit, a few pieces of content here and there (doesn't have to be anything major) to show appreciation for the community which is supporting them isn't something unrealistic to ask for.

Not necessarily the game series Is a 500m investment. They might make it back they might not.

It's the most preordered game in history, they will probably recoup most of their dev costs on this game just from the initial sales. It's also 500m for the 4 games spanning 10 years, not just this one title. Granted the initial title will have the most work involved and probably be the most costly, but now that the groundwork is in place like the engine and stuff the sequels will be easier and cheaper to make. Throwing in something small occasionally to make people feel appreciated for their support is a good investment, because people will feel appreciated and more willing to spend more to support them. People don't need whole free dlc packs, that's a bit unrealistic. Small pieces of content every now and then wouldn't hurt though.

Re-check that statement I think you have the exaggerated version. It's the highest preordered "new" IP. Meaning other franchises surpass it.

Meh, picking at details now. Fact is if it's the most preordered new IP in history, it's likely to sell well after release too. A lot of people wait for initial reviews and release day bugs to be ironed out before purchasing. Activision wouldn't have committed to a 10-year half a billion dollar business agreement based just on a slight chance of success, it's a calculated risk to them and they've been doing this long enough to have a fairly good sense of what will be successful or not.

  • They wouldn't be making a new cod then. But I digress, anything could happen.

What? Are you trying to tell me that CoD doesn't gross hundreds of millions of dollars in profit per title? The Ghosts sales figures were far less than projected but it still made HUGE profits ($293m net profit in first quarter 2014 in fact), the original Black Ops also made a 400% ROI, you can't tell me that Activision couldn't afford to throw a free map or 2 in, they clearly aren't that hard up for cash. People wouldn't be quite so bitter towards CoD if everything in-game wasn't monetized, it wouldn't have killed them to throw a map in here and there for free to make the community feel appreciated. Not doing so has led to the widespread hatred towards the franchise, even from within its own fanbase. People would be more likely to deal with small issues without complaint, if occasionally they were given a little free thank you gift for supporting them throughout all these years and made to feel at least slightly appreciated. The only free addition to a CoD game (at least since MW2) was the addition of the map Terminal to MW3, which was directly ported from MW2 so it was lazy as hell. The release of CoD:Ghosts worried them with the lackluster sales figures, which were far less than what they projected. The fact that they removed any kind of ping indication, possibly in a last ditch effort to hide the fact the game was a laggy broken mess was also a big slap in the face to a lot of gamers and led to a lot of frustration from within the community, and would have helped drive those sales down. Those poor sales figures are likely what led to the increased the budget for this iteration, and the attempt to innovate a little more in the hopes they can try and revive the series and keep their cash cow alive. If CoD flops again like Ghosts did, I think they will start seriously reconsidering the idea keeping that IP alive.

Yes, with millions of players in the beta, the majority of whom loved the game, coming from a company who has had major hits in the past and a huge fan following, this game totally won't make its investment back, there's no way. *sarcasm*

  • So far judging by the beta they've only made 300/500 (estimate) back. So if ppl don't buy it after 9/9 they might have a problem.

  • The 500mil investment is in the series as a whole, not just the first Destiny. Bungie has stated multiple times that 500mil is "Nowhere near" what their investment was in the first Destiny.
