Maybe a stupid question: what's the point of glimmer? I didn't buy any weapons or armor after the first mission (and I think those were free). Everything I found outside of the tower, or was rewarded, was superior to the stuff up for sale. All of the high-end equipment seemed to cost Vanguard or Crucible points rather than glimmer. All I used the stuff for was a new ship (which doesn't do anything), and a new sparrow (because the golden one didn't match my armor).

I think upgrading you weapons actually cost glimmer, although it was so small a amount you might never notice it. And the rewards from Iron Banner cost a cost a couple of thousands if I remember correctly. Also, while you could get along with the equipment you looted, leveling the cryptarch allowed you to optimize your build. E.g. Max dicipline and a reload bonus for your facourite weapon.
