What D&D kit do I need to learn the mechanics of D&D?

So there is a possibility I might be getting into another D&D session.. And here is my problem.. When it comes to stats, rolling and rulings.. The mechanics of D&D, I have to have someone hold my hand on that stuff.. I was wondering if anyone knew what I SHOULD buy to get started in understanding how to play D&D when it comes to stats and stuff like that? I'm strong though with the role playing and developing unique characters, with interesting backgrounds. I don't own any D&D material myself.. not even the dice. I want to learn to be self-efficient with the game that I don't need to ask, "Oh.. Do I roll for a fortitude or something else" or something silly similar to that. By the way.. I have three characters I'm working on: Necromancer Daris is a Undead Skeleton Archer/Fighter Col is a Lizardfolk Wizard Damien is a Human

  • Personally I would stick to 3.5 core if you have trouble with all the stats and stuff. Whatever you do don't get 2nd edition and 4th is just a video game you have to read.
