Why do I suck so bad at Destiny PVP?

Alright prokillers, here's your chance to school somebody who will actually appreciate it. Quick backstory; Last time I played an FPS in PVP was when Marathon was hot property, so some of my problems may just be because I'm really rusty. Anyway, what's the deal with PVP in Destiny? I feel like I'm just doing it all wrong...every time I blink somebody gets me with a one-shot kill and it doesn't seem to matter much what weapon they're using, or what I'm trying to do to stay alive. None of my weapons feel anywhere near as powerful as what the other team is using. Honestly I really want to like the Destiny PvP experience, because I've got a sentimental attachment to Bungie and this game is lots of fun for me in PvE. So help me out. How do I get the most out of this game? I've got military experience (which basically boils down to having a great deal of training in following instructions) and lots of time to kill once the game ships (retired), so if you folks can boil this particular PvP system down to some basic tactical and strategic elements I'll be able to pick up on it and have fun with it, but right now I'm feeling pretty worn down after having the brakes beat off me repeatedly in the beta. Thanks in advance for your thoughts (and for the inevitable insults from the kids table). p.s. Don't think I'm blaming the game...obviously people are winning at PvP, so the system works...I just down understand how it works yet, so I'm not one of them.

  • 2 words, my friend: Fusion Rifle. I'm becoming pretty effective at using it over ones who use a shotgun. You just have to time the charge rate. Good luck!

Don't feel bad. the PvP is shit in destiny. They might make some changes before release but not likely. Insta-kill powers don't belong in a competitive shooter. Imagine if every coach in the NFL had a special flag they could throw that automatically grants their team a touchdown. The other team does a solid job hammering down on the defense, sacking the QB and plugging the holes for the RB to run and basically shutting down everything with raw skill at the game. Then on 4th down they just throw the flag and all that hard work to shut down an offense was for nothing. That's the same thing as when your team is able to take down a group of enemies guarding an objective with their guns, aiming at their heads and generally just being good at the game. While they're capturing the objective a lone enemy walks in. This should be suicide for him right? He should just go capture an objective that's less filled or guard one of his own. But he has an insta-kill. And he uses it to take down this group of players capping an objective that they worked hard to do so. All of that skill that you have, your reflexes, hand-eye coordination, is for nothing. Because some guy mashed the bumpers and threw a giant purple glowing bomb and wiped your team out.

My friend had a 0.30 K/D his first match, so I told him try to sit back or use your teammates (Lol) to get kills. An example being one of my friends loves to charge at the enemy players, so he would just follow him and throw grenades for kills. He would stay back more and go between objectives we owned to secure kills with scout rifles and snipers. I like to do both styles, if I know I'm up against players who are decent I tend to stay back and let them come to me while I patrol two objectives, and if they're players I know I can take 90% of the time, I'll go wherever I think they would spawn. It all boils down to playing and gaining the experience from it, you'll notice maybe after a day, a week, or even a month. You'll start to pay more attention to the radar, remember the players you're facing, remember the class abilities, know how to use the weapons etc.) In my opinion the difference between a good player and a great player is simply thought process and reaction time. Both those can't be taught, they're learned by your own playstyle, I wish you the best of luck though in the Crucibles of the future. -P.S- A little self promotion here, I stream every now and then and have some Destiny gameplay on my twitch channel if you ever wanna pick apart my games or ask any questions, you can message me if you want to know it / or have specific questions.

    • shotguns can be over powered or REALLY under power i like using shotgun but us your radar a lot so you know where an enemy will be then be more aggesive and chase him and when your close two shots usually kill my shotguns pretty high so 1 shot for me

    • If you are doing bad then just do what everyone else does... gather up a six man fireteam and stack a server. If you still suck after that then try camping... it is pretty much TDM after all.

    • Stack toughness and recovery if you are dying a lot... That may help you out. I was playing with the hunter and I loved it, especially their super! Don't forget to use your super when it is ready, preferably on an enemy ;) , as it will spawn orbs to fill teammates super energy and in turn help you to keep filling your own. Scout rifle is amazing, and always nice to have a good AR in close quarter PvP. Practice makes perfect and always aim for the headshot and you should see yourself improving.

    • In this game gear is going to be a huge factor in most matches. IF they have a mode that puts everything to base stats then you are pulled back more towards skill. Map awareness is going to be something that you just need to practice at. Remember that things will come from odd angles as we will all have a double jump.

    • PvP in FPS games is all about reaction time and steady thumbs. Remember, always, always, always...shoot em in the head. Hodor.

    • It takes time to get used to, it's way different than BF4 or CoD. First. You need to find which class fits your play style then choose the right weapons for pvp for me it was an auto rifle and shotgun this can change depending on map. Using surroundings for cover is important also make sure your watching your HUD to see what direction enemies are coming from and note you can't see the HUD if your aiming. Working together with your team also helps rather than trying to be a lone wolf but u can still succeed this way. Also biggest thing is aim for the head to get critical damage. But really I think it just takes time maybe try mastering the class u pick get good and getting head shots in over and apply some of those skills to pvp. I'm sure u will get the hang of it soon enough goodluck.

    • First off I'm not the best player ever but I was drastically improving my stats on last day of beta. First off in my opinion find a gun or guns you're comfortable with. It matters because of what kind of player you are,as in do you like to rush, hit and run, snipe etc. Dont go rushing from cap point to cap point in this game. Capture a flag an chill for a moment. Be aware of the radar. Pay close attention to it. It's your best friend. In close quarters always be ready to switch to your shotty. When you have a Super don't blow it on one enemy, wait until you can find a group 2 or 3 or even 5 enemies capping the same flag. Then nail them. Most of all try not to be a lone wolf. If you run into more than one enemy and you don't have a super you will lose the gun fight most likely. Just have fun and learn the maps.

    • Firstly, I'm not an incredible force in PVP, but I've held my own and scored high in matches. Mainly it's how quick you are to respond to a threat. A sense of the map is the beginning, then the radar warns you of the general area where threats are coming, and from there it's a lot easier to be accurate looking down your sight instead of firing off the hip. Lastly, while honing your skills be resolved to die. Every death is a lesson in the way.
