CoD most "Popular", Halo is still the Icon

So I was just looking through the BBC website and a article appeared about somebody talking about their top 5 games, the picture accompanying the article was the Master Chief. It seems even though everybody and their grandma knows about Call of Duty, Halo still has something CoD does not, the eye and memory of an entire Generation and is a generational Icon like Mario and Sonic before. Do you you think Call of Duty could ever claim the same privilege that Halo has or is their no character for people to identify with preventing it to be lifted to a similar position?

  • COD has to many different campaigns unlike Halo and Halo's side campaigns all branch off of the main story unlike COD.

  • It's hard for COD because with the WWII games, you were a nameless, faceless GI. Ok, fine, we don't need fictional heroes for that war. The problem began with 4. Price was only a nod from his ancestor in WW III, and wasn't the hero until MW 2. But it was too late- Treyarch already released WaW and after 2 did Black ops. Ghosts was just another of their continuity problems w/ lore. Halo has invariably been consistent, thus the recognition

  • Soap is the only memorable character. But that's not really saying much.

    • Cod has too many big time celebrity actors like Michael Rooker from The Walking Dead and Michael Keaton from Tim Burton's Batman movies.

    • Nah. It's very obvious that Call of Duty is the Transformers of video games. Every character is pretty much voiced by a celebrity. There isn't much depth or characterization to them. When I see a Call of Duty character I see a typical soldier. Someone I don't care about in terms of entertainment. While the franchise succeeds in delivering high paced action that is somewhat fueled by the actors performances, I don't see anything resembling the iconic prowess of Halo. Maybe in the days when Call of Duty was honorable and based it's games on veterans, but not today.

            • Cost on Delivery has no real iconic character. They could make a military looking guy, but some might mistake it for a military ad.

            • I have only played parts of Halo 3 and Halo CE. However, my friend is getting MCC and I plan on playing all 4 Halo games. As a PS player, I can say that codfish shouldn't even be mentioned with Halo. Halo is on a completely different level than codfish. And no, codfish will not claim the privilege Halo had. Halo only has the epic memory of the first 3 games that Bungie made. Halo 4 was a start of a completely new franchise. Although the same game franchise, it was a completely different style than what Bungie did. Even so, until the Halo series officially comes to an end, it will always be in a lot of people's hearts. And, hopefully, in mine someday too.

            • Halo is iconic because of its story and characters... underwhelming as they are, they are memorable. CoD is more popular in the public eye right now, but thirty years down the line Halo will be much more remembered.

They have no iconic figure. I couldn't tell you even what the story is about other than a bunch of guys trying to stop some terrorist. That's it. Master Chief could sell a Halo platformer with him in it tomorrow.

I don't think Call of Duty has that central figure they need to be the face of the franchise. Sure they have characters like Price, Woods, and Mason, but they only appear in a handful of games, and it's generally not the character you play as. Furthermore, the box art is always a miscellaneous soldier, it's more of a symbol than an actual character. Sure you can argue the Chief is miscellaneous because he wears armor and hides his face, but he's not Random Soldier 125. I'd argue the helmet actually makes him more recognizable and iconic, somewhat like a stormtrooper in Star Wars. I think out of the companies making Call of Duty, Treyarch is by far setting the standard of having a character you can identify for the most part. That being said, I don't think they're quite there yet, and they may never be. They're making their characters more unique, but by not adding them to the box art or showing more third person cut scenes they're hurting their ability to make an identifiable character.
