How can you not be cynical?

I don't understand how people on here can be as motivated and excited by Destiny when Bungie's last game (their "swan song" for the Halo series) was, by all accounts, no more than a disappointment to the franchise that put them on the map for console gamers. I mean, we know extremely little about this game when it is only six months out. What we've seen so far doesn't necessarily indicate anything impressive. It bothers me that people aren't approaching this game with the same level of scrutiny they are other games. Sure, it's Bungie, which has an amazing track record, but some of the people who helped build that legacy aren't even working there anymore. I just don't get the hype. The only time I was excited for a game as much as the people here was when Halo 3 was announced, and back then I was 11 and had only experienced a handful of games.

  •
a disappointment to the franchise
I'm guessing there are plenty of fans who disagree. In any case, I think it's clear that by the time Bungie was working on Reach, their hearts weren't in it anymore. My understanding is that they were contractually obligated to produce another Halo game as part of the deal to split from Microsoft. Destiny is a passion project. I think people have high expectations because they can see that passion from Bungie, and passion is contagious.

One name, that's all. Just one name: Bungie.

  • Dude you're on a game specific forum. Go to any other forum for a specific game and you will find the same level of enthusiasm.

  • Cynical isn't a necessarily a bad emotion to feel, and you're right that a lot of people have blind faith in Destiny. With that said, if you truly read every article, listened to every podcast, broke down all of DeeJ's subtle and coy comments, I think you might get what some people are excited about. You'll always have fan boys -and you shouldn't blame those people for trusting a company that makes kick ass games- but I consider myself educated in game development, specifically Bungie and Destiny, and my concerns about this game have melted away entirely. I won't spend all night explaining the specifics, but I would encourage you to really look past these forums for Destiny info because there is some really great stuff out there. And let's be honest, with 600+ people working on a FPS for 4-5 years after 2 years of pre planning, it's bound to be a blast even if it isn't game changer.

I don't think I'm excited anymore. Optimistic and cynical at the same time seems more along the lines of my current take on Destiny. I'm hopeful due to the what's in the background and not the focused attention on PVP and the E3 demo. But I'm jaded because the aspects of adventure are not being confirmed but Bungie is bending over backwards to confirm PVP. Slayer and balanced arena PVP? Really? There's franchise after franchise toiling around in that puppy chow of nerf and nerf again mentalities aplenty. But do we really adventure out there or is it just a sensational quip for Game Informer? I don't know other than those swaying lines on those unused shuttle in old Russia. Those stairs being lit by the ghost as it travels up to turn on the lights. Those small unnoticed depths that say there's adventure just hold on.

  • I'm with you. They haven't shown anything about the end game and that's what this game is all about, get to max Lvl. then get gear. Yet they haven't said what the PvP game tips are going to be how many maps there are; or how many Raids and FTs missions there going to be. But its GDC week and will see if they show or tell us anything about that.

  • Considering there is a lot of new tech (-nology and -nique) being used in this game, I'd say it's very much worth the initial price and wait.
