Spawn, think the beta will be announced at GDC? I am figuring that some cool stuff will be presented, unsure however if the beta will be unveiled then

  • I imagine the beta date being announced with an epic trailer to really ramp up the hype machine. GDC isn't a viable spot to announce something like a beta date.

I imagine no. The announcement of the Beta is a big event that requires a large stage because not only does it provide an opportunity to get more people to sign up and participate in the Beta, probably more than half the people who have registered to play won't show up unless you remind them when and where it is going on. The word MUST get out. GDC just isn't the right atmosphere for that sort of announcement. It's an Industry Conference, there will be press there, but not at the levels you're looking for with this sort of announcement, and also it seems sorta cruel to have several of your Animators cobble together this really interesting and in depth presentation on Animation Workflow only to have DeeJ and Urk broadly march out at the very end with confetti and cannons going off saying "YO NERDS I'M REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU AND YOUR SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT AND ALL AND IMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT WE GOT US A BETA TO ANNOUNCE! WHAT WHAT!!!!" It's not to say we won't get anything out of the conference. Like last year, they will certainly have resources to help illustrate their points and a lot of interesting information for more designer-minded people to digest, and I'm certain we can get a healthy amount of speculation out of the whole deal, but no, not a vidoc, and not a beta announcement. This being said, I don't imagine that we'll have to wait all the way to E3 to get a Beta Date, it makes more sense to create an artificial big event earlier than E3 and use E3 as a reminder of the Beta and also a place to show off more Beta Footage. You know how DeeJ and Urk have been flying over the pond lately? You know how they've had "old friends" over at their studio? Just as they've said in the Weekly Updates, they are setting up the pieces for the next stage. There must be meaning in its roar.

"Your science project sucks and I want to know more information about this project you can't tell me about!!! Plse!! I promise I won't tell the internet!" My unsourced timeline for Bungie that may very be equivocally incorrect on many levels: >We'll know a focused timeframe for the beta before mid May from some media (next bungie podcast?). >Bungie will regurgitate the announcement of their beta at E3, media/press will be present, good timing >The public beta won't be open until Bungie Day time frame. Give/Take a week or so.

Yeah, now that you point that out, I agree: GDC is not the place to announce the beta release date. But then, E3 might be too close to the Beta's arrival. So we might be seeing an independent announcement for the beta between the two as you said. Sorry about the edit.

  • Hard to say. Bungie has been known to leave "cliffhangers" at their GDC presentations, so it's definitely possible. Hopefully when they have Q&A time at the end, someone asks a question regarding to it and we get a teaser. Last year we did get a full blown concept trailer, maybe we'll get the same again as well. Time will tell!
