Would a Black Superman Seem Odd?

Yes

In light of recent discussions regarding the ethnicity of the Human Torch, from Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, I was curious as to what people would think of a black actor being cast as Superman. Now before I say anything else, I want to state that I have absolutely no problem with black characters or actors, as I can see this thread quickly turning into a "you're racist" flame war. Thus, I must remind participants to keep this discussion cordial. Now regarding a black Superman, allow me to set the conditions of the vote. We are not using comic book examples of a black Superman, as what looks good in a comic can look absolutely silly in a live action film (Batman's costume is an excellent example of this). Furthermore, alterations to Superman's costume will not be considered, as a change in palette can radically influence how a black Superman might look. Therefore, let's assume that the costume in question is the Man of Steel costume. Finally, I must once again ask participants to keep the discussion civil and cordial; no insults, allegations of racism, sexism, etc. Thank you for your time.

  • I'll be hearing jokes similar to Michael Jackson, soon enough.

  • Not really. If they were to do a black Superman, I think it would give him more of an insight into what it means to be human. Can you imagine a black Clark Kent experiencing discrimination simply because of his skin color, being tempted to use his powers, yet rising about it to help all of humanity? Obviously there always was this thing about Superman never feeling the same with him being an alien and all, but what would he think about humans hating other humans for something they too couldn't control?

    • There are so many black father abandonment issues that could be brought up for the origin story. I'm going to hell.

    • Yes. Superman is supposed to be bold, strong and heroic. And honestly I don't know many black actors who could pull of a Superman.

Obviously it doesn't matter at all but I don't see why they'd change it. I do, however, have a problem with the human torch being black. He's supposed to be Susan's (invisible woman) brother and the likelihood of the two having different skin tones to that degree is very low. It just seems unnecessary. Edit: with supes, his being an alien gives you freedom to really do whatever with his appearance as long as its consistent to the rest of the kryptonians.

        • It would be difficult to picture superman as black. To me it's easier to picture the Green Lantern as black because I grew up watching the Justice League from time to time.

        • I have no real real problem with it, but I think that rather than re-purposing older characters, they should create new ones. I wouldn't boycott such a movie, nor would I really have a problem with it, but I feel that there should be black superheroes and not regifted white ones.

        • Wait, why is Madness banned? Seriously what a -blam!-ed up moderation system we have "hur gib al da memberz powrs. sems liek a gud ideuh" OT: Yes, it would be odd. Unless if he pulled a M.J and changed his skin color then that's something different. It would be odd if Cyborg, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, or any other black superheros suddenly became white

          • Yes, superman is white. That isn't a racial thing, that's just the fact that he's a white character.

            • Yes. It's like making a documentary about Ghandi but the actor for Ghandi is white. It doesn't make sense because that's not who he is. Superman has been white since he was created. He's white.

              • I think the Human Torch and Superman are different in the sense that one has been culturally ingrained into our society and the other has not. The Human Torch is malleable in the fact that no one really knows who he is outside of comic lore, at least in comparison to the A-listers. Changing the ethnicity of Superman is different because Superman is so culturally stapled that it would just be an insult to the character.

                    • It sucks that people get so defensive about characters' races. It's like, a guy on fire who can fly raises no questions, superhero movie plots are holier that the Pope's Swiss cheese, but make one character a different race and people flip a shit because "it would be different!"

Yes. There was also a discussion I saw a while back where people were talking about how great Idris Elba would be as 007, but I couldn't get over how (for lack of a better word) weird a black Bond would be. Maybe that means I'm discriminatory, but whatever. Also, if they decided to change Bond's race for no reason it would kind of piss me off, as I'm a huge fan and it wouldn't really make sense to just change a fairly well-established character like that. I'm assuming the same goes for Supes fans.

                        • The whole black human torch thing never set well because it seems like a very obvious "Look guys, we're racially sensitive!" Black Spider Man? Sure. Black Superman? Sure. Black Batman? Why the hell not? Believe it or not, ethnicity does play a role in stories, like when people are brother and sister...

                          • Yes, as there has been over 60 years of Superman being portrayed as a white male. Not saying that it would be bad, just different and unusual. Odd, even.
