MS is backpedaling hardcore for Windows 9

I might actually upgrade from Windows 7 for that

I don't care

Lol Windows, ChromeOS FTW

Does anyone even say FTW anymore?

As a user of Windows 8.1, I'm pretty happy with my OS. There have been some cosmetic changes (like having the Start Screen appear on top of your desktop) and functional changes (like the ability to boot to desktop) that make the experience better for us lowly mouse-and-keyboard users. We also got out Start button back. Yay. But it seems to finally be sinking in for Microsoft that the mice among us are just not getting used to the Metro UI. The latest rumored change to Windows 8 is where boot-to-desktop is enabled by default. The option is currently hidden beneath some layers of menus, and I wouldn't have known about it at all if I hadn't have read it on the internets. Other changes include putting Search and Power buttons on the Start Screen itself. You currently have to either right-click in the bottom-left corner of the screen to find the power options, which seems way too complicated for such an obvious feature. Search is similarly hidden in either the Charms bar, accessed by moving the mouse to the rightmost corners and dragging towards the middle, or on the Start Screen where it can be accessed by simply typing. Metro applications can also be pinned to the taskbar, rather than just the Start Screen which desktop users will apparently never have to see again, and they can run as windows on the Desktop. This is more or less a reversal of what Microsoft wanted to do with Windows 8. In that OS, the Start Screen was the main UI for everyone and the Desktop was just another app. In Windows 9, it appears that the Desktop will play a more prominent role.

  • I still have windows 7 and refuse to use 8. I will never use 8. In fact i just built my new pc a few weeks ago and of course I went with Win 7 ultimate. No way on earth I would use 8. It's not for me and I hate the UI in 8 with extreme passion. I do not even like xbox 360 or the xbox one's blocky user interface, just annoying and harder to find info quickly when it's spread across the screen like a galaxy lol Windows 9 will be better. MS knows that they can't make an OS for pc users work like a tablet touch screen anymore. By then Win 8 will be outdated and people won't be screaming at me to get 9 anymore, instead they will say I should get 9 and will gladly do so if the Ui is better. Nothing frustrates me more in an application, web browser, game or OS is when Ui is change just for the sake of change and it's WORSE than how it was before. UI is made to be USER FRIENDLY and function! When UI gets to hip and cool for it's own good and confuses veteran consumers even you've got a problem. Just youtube like "why windows 8 sucks" and you'll get plenty of logical and reasonable explanations for why the OS UI doesn't work for everyone. Good for those who do like it. Not taking away your fun but not everyone likes it or has to like it. I'm glad I can stick with Win 7 for as long as I desire.

    • All of the lab computers at my school's CS department were upgraded this year from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Today I had to print out a Lisp Assignment for class, and the only computer in the lab was booted up in Windows 8 rather than Linux, and I was in a rush, so I figured "Eh, how bad could it be?" Goodness. What were they thinking? Downloading the file from my email wasn't so bad, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how to open the file system from anywhere. I had to open the file browser by clicking through the recycling bin on the desktop. That's right, Microsoft made me metaphorically climb through garbage to get at my shit.

      • I just got a new computer with Windows 8 on it. I'm not finding it too bad so far. I want my Start button back, but I've managed to ignore all of the other annoying features.

        • What terrible poll options, none of them are what I would want to vote for :( And this might be a bit off-topic from the thread, but I thought Microsoft was saying that they were going to stop releasing major new operating systems and just make occasional incremental upgrades to Windows 8?

            • Been using Win8 since day one. Used Win7 before that since RTM. Used Vista before Win7 from when it released. (January 30, 2007 I believe) I never had problems with any of them. I actually had more problems with XP than any of those.

              • I don't really care. I'm comfortable with 8.1 now on my newish desktop and can't see myself upgrading my OS until it's reached the end of its lifespan.

                    • >windows 9 uh, you're talking about rumors for 8.1 update... it''s not windows 9 unless they announced a new OS compatible with real computers instead of laptops and tablets. in fact each "new" windows version so far has just been using shiny new UI upgrades and hardware optimizations over the same system core from windows 6.
