I felt a bit sad when his family actually died, they could have just been badly beaten and abducted. Fred would have had to buy their freedom, thus giving the villains motive and advancing the plot. But you're a Deathbot and I suppose you have to do these things.

    The family dying was the best way, and most cliche way, of developing the protagonist's motives. Anything else wouldn't have as much impact, at least in my mind. Plus I did try and chalk it up to make it as sad as I could, I didn't want the story to be all comedy. Originally it was going to be a completely silly, outrageous story but then I figured some stuff would be too much. So I figured a serious plot line sprinkled with silly elements would be the best idea.
