So my friend and I had an argument... The topic: Is Magic: The Gathering a pay-to-win I will not give you my or his arguments because that would ruin the point of this. Come up with your own logic, and let me know what you decide. Also remember this is opinion... I do not intend to create any arguments. My opinion: Yes Edit: I am talking about the card game... Also please comment why because I would like to know your reasoning..

  • Depends at the level you're competing. If you've been collecting MTG for years and attend FNM often, you're likely to pick up on the most recent trends that players are doing with their decks. No doubt that there are always better options to go with for cards, but you have to balance that with what is currently available to you. I have a couple decks where I have dropped $120 on them, but ultimately you have to know what the play and how to play it. That's entirely a game of it's own. You can look up the top 8 decklists of 2013 or even at certain tournaments, build the exact same deck, but if you don't know how to play them in accordance to your opponents, it's not going to do you any good. My opinion: nope.

  • It's true that the best cards are in high demand and it can take a couple hundred dollars to create a deck that's the flavour of the month. However, simply having such a deck is no substitute for the skill that is required to know how the deck works, how it matches up with the other decks in the metagame, what your sideboard should be, when to sideboard, counting cards, all of that jazz. There's still a ton of skill involved, and while money is a big aspect of unlocking your abillity to do your best, it's like saying Nascar is play to win because your Average Joe doesn't have the money laying around to buy himself a racecar. Not to mention there are other competitive ways of playing Magic that aren't as gated by money, like Sealed and Draft, these limited formats are great for adding to your card pool without the waste of just ripping open booster packs.

    • All I know is that Magic's overrated as hell. I've tried numerous times to get into it and I just can't stay interested.

      • Not necessarily, no. Are the best cards expensive? Yes, in most cases. However, it's still possible to make some very good decks for low amounts of money. It's all based on a player's knowledge of the game and their ability to put cards together into a deck that will work well together. You can put $5,000 into a deck and use cards like Black Lotus, but it won't do you any good if you don't maximize and efficiently use your deck's potential. My best friend made a Dimir deck for less than $10 and that could effectively cancel his opponent's spells and then shut them down with Cipher spells attached to Invisible Stalkers and other creatures. The strategy was fairly reliable and often did very well against all sorts of decks. Now, I believe that the most expensive decks can most certainly be the best decks, but that's not always going to be the case.

        • Partially. More money means you can get better cards, but it isn't really necessary. I mean, I got a really good mythic rare in my first ever booster pack, but there is definitely an advantage to being able to buy more

          • Are we talking the actual card game, or the game on LIVE arcade?
