Bungie Morality System (Never Seen Before)

No Morality System (Bungie is not BioWare)
Morality: - the differentiation of intentions, decisions, and actions between those that are "good" (or right) and those that are "bad" (or wrong) - beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior
Morality is something that plays a big part of who we are as human beings. Destiny is supposed to be what you make of it based on the choices you make. Just as with all humans, "Not all Guardians are good." With that in mind, will Destiny have some sort of Morality system in place to supplement the way you play? I'm not suggesting the dialogue heavy choices that you see in BioWare games, but perhaps a BioWare Light version. Destiny is an action game after all, and I'm sure Bungie wouldn't want something to bog down all of the action. Perhaps this Morality choice will be something as simple as assisting Human Sympathizers from the various Alien races, or betraying an evil NPC only to take his goods for your own personal gain. These little nuances may also affect the way your character looks or how NPCs react to your presence. In all fiction, Humans are the most versatile as far as ability and intellect, which is why they are so dangerous. What do you think? • I don't think it was ever confirmed that all Guardians are going to be PCs... I think that there will be at least a handful of NPC Guardians to interact with. I find it more likely that those would be the bad apples rather than the players. Personally, I never liked morality choices/loyalty to a specific faction in games. Not because I'm one of those people like, "I don't want to have morals in my game," but because I like to play as much of the game as I possibly can as one character. It starts getting annoying to me when, in order to access a specific part of the game (that I didn't know about when I made the choices in the first place), I have to either do a ton of stuff to reverse my morality or pay some fine to be in good standing with a certain faction. It never stood out to me as being fun or even remotely enjoyable.

I think it would be good to have a morality system by actions. So if theres a situation where there are prisoners say these prisoners are at gunpoint you could go guns blazing but if your not careful they could get killed or injuried by yours and enemy fire. etc But i disagree with the fact all bad decisions are evil or wrong In some circumstances say there's two sets of hostages but you only have limited forces maybe drawing off the majority of a more major VIP to get them out safely is more important that the minor hostages etc of course with more players it would be easier to save both but if the situations are time limited before execution etc

I don't remember where I read/heard it but I'm pretty sure DeeJ said that we'll have enough baddies to deal with in the world of Destiny and that guardians are all basically good guys. This was in regards to PKing in public spaces, I think; maybe I dreamed it. Wouldn't be the first time our lovely community manager graced my dreams. ;) I mean, on a level that goes beyond gameplay mechanics, I guess you could just be a dick to people you come across but then nobody would want to play with you.

        • No one will be able to be "bad" in Destiny. Guardians protect humanity, that's it. I dont get why people are excited to be pirates and mercenaries when that's not what Destiny is about. Your defending the last of humanity, not raiding human vessels for glory and plunder.

There is no need for a morality system in this type of game. Half of they time they end up lazily developed and half-baked and being completely binary anyway. It doesn't matter if I'm a good Shepard or a bad Shepard, in the end it's just one big bland Shepard.

            • Morality systems never work right. Look at Fable, you get good points for killing bandits. You could spend hours, slaughtering every innocent person in some town, racking up evil point after evil point. Then when you step outside and kill a bandit, which you need to do to survive, you are awarded good points. You weren't killing him because he was a bandit, you were killing him because he would attack you, and you like killing things. Morality is such a complex issue. Intent and method come into play, and it cannot be properly represented in a one dimensional meter of good/evil. Much better would be a reputation system. Although this still bases things only on actions, it allows each action to be judged as good and bad by different groups at the same time. Looking back at the Fable example: imagine if each time you killed a bandit, your reputation with bandits dropped, but your reputation with townspeople grew. It's one action, but each group views that action differently. Fallout attempted to do this to an extent, but I feel it could have been better executed. This is how I hope the factions in Destiny will work. I don't want factions to be a direct player choice. I want each faction to have a set of values, and as you complete missions and perform other in-game actions, your reputation with these factions changes. Some, if not all, of these values should be mutually exclusive, so that you cannot appease all factions at the same time. Only after you've gained a high enough reputation with a particular faction are you invited to join. That way, your faction membership actually means something about how you play the game.

              • Destiny really seems to be chock full of themes like hope and the return of the civilized world from the ashes. In such an idealistic game I doubt there will be room for GRIMDARK guardians.

                • Perhaps something similar to Spec Ops: The line? There is no morality system as such but you are given moral choices with no choice being truly right or wrong.

                      • no morality systems ever! for any reason! seriously nothing ruins a game like a morality system. your actions with other players alone should define you and really I haven't seen anything yet that suggests you can be a boogerbrain. separate loot streams, no suggestions of pvp in the story mode.

                      • That idea seems crazy I'd love that feature in Destiny. Moreover, your description of it and your sources are pertinents. in terms of role play and "making your character unique", that would be perfectly appropriate. Haven't seen a topic that pertinent for a while on this forum, your idea is great, maybe one of the greatest I've seen by far. Cheers bro !

                        • Well... in EVE Online I liked to grab a frigate or a cruiser and hunt down pirates and renegades operating in the shadowy sections of the universe. In Halo 3 and Reach, when someone was being a jerk and trying to kill you or trick you into killing them to get yourself banned from the game (so that they could steal your weapon or vehicle), I would go out of my way to put them down in a way that didn't get me banned.... So... I am the Anti-Hero. Yeah, I go around murdering other characters and doing a whole lot of bad, nasty things... But I only do them to bad people and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

                              • It would be cool if Bungie took their own spin on this. I'm a huge fan of Mass Effect and Fallout, that being said I want Destiny to be it's own original vision. Morality definitely lends to replay value as you can go through the game multiple times, playing good, bad or indifferent. I also enjoy that it increases tension when you know your decisions affect the lives of those around you and how the game reacts to you from that point on based on your choice.
