Didn't they realize that the appeal of these games came from the goofy humor and bizarre things that you could do in the game? Another brown/grey zombie game sounds like a bore.

It's becoming more and more clear that Capcom executives are completely detached from reality. Having a game that excels at its own genre? Can't have that. We gotta remove what was unique to our franchise, what made people like the games in the first place, in some misguided attempt at stealing another game's fanbase. A game that isn't even in the same -blam!-ing genre.
