The Dark Army: Clues & Theories, Pt. 2

In updating the original thread I passed the characters limit, so I'm going to post our expansions of my original theory of the 5th Race and new information on this thread as they come up, and try to keep them short. Updates will be in order of newest to oldest. ________________________________________ - Just a thought: what if the "Glimmer" is a single entity, a legion of sorts? In the moodboard, Race 5's panel shows only one enemy figure, maybe in association with the smoke itself. Recall that one enemy silhouette is also shown in the "heart of the fortress" in the Moon, as well. Perhaps the Glimmer, as some others have suggested, IS the smoke. And maybe this guy is the manifest physical form conceived by the Smoke/Glimmer. Imagine the silhouette figure teleporting behind the Guardian once he gets a look at him, leaving glimmering trails of smoke and shadow in its place (Slenderman in space--Oh God help us all). If this theory is true, the Glimmer could also likely make an army of image copies of itself. - The smoke, supernatural light, and zombie-like march of the eerie Fallen and Cabal walking together in the Dark Patrol concept image has lead some to suggest that the Glimmer may be mind-controlling enemies, or possibly even shape-shifters. - I took some screenshots from a few of those super quick frames from the character development video from the conference. These concepts appear to resemble the floating creature on the moodboard: Unknown creature #1 - possible Glimmer? SmithsRevenge pointed out that this same approximate stance seems to be the shape of a sihouetted figure in the middle of this image in the Moon fortress. It's small, but you can see him right below the large orb being constructed in the center. #2 -Possible influence on Glimmer character? It draws hints from the moodboard. #3 - totally unknown species. Lightly colored face might represent Glimmer concept from moodboard #4 - This is a very different look and less likely as it doesn't quite look like the creature on the moodboard, but we don't know what this creature is and it appears to have an onyxy sword and look quite powerful and sinister. Any relation? Could this be an army being built by the Glimmer? It may be a Fallen type, but it looks more brutish and has only two arms. - Unknown pointed out that Bungie trademarked 5 terms at the same time. Vex, Fallen, Cabal, Hive, and Glimmer. The definition of the word "glimmer" fits for this race.

  • I dunno why, but I always thought this picture was of the Hive (Those triangles being a sorta hazard symbol), and the green one with that guy spurting his soul out of his head was the glimmer. But you just gave me an idea... That guy in the concept art has no resemblance to any other known species, suggesting whatever they are is tangible to any enemy. Then I thought... Those things aren't hazard symbols, they're the Obsidian Pyramid Ships! So my idea is that these guys most likely live within these ships (Theres a crap ton of them in concept art) which are most likely on Venus (The most unspeculated planet, and the only one without a trademark enemy) and steal the bodies of anyone who fails to steal their riches (and dies obviously). So from there, lets say that all dead bodies act as a new home for that ghost smoke, and they gather an army to both defend their ships and Venus!

Could this mysterious 5th enemy perhaps be manipulating one or more of the others for its own ends? Perhaps the Fallen are in their current state because of a prior run-in with this 5th race? Based on the recent ViDoc & Moon videos, we know that the Hellmouth is inhabited by the Hive. But what if they are being summoned by this mysterious 5th enemy as conscripts in its so-called "Dark Army"?

        • The glimmer isn't the name of the 5th enemy, glimmer is the currency of destiny.

          • In Warghost650's picture of the guy in front of the moon base or something like that, doesn't that sphere look like a smaller version of the Traveler. Maybe the Glimmer are trying to create their own. Anyone else notice that?

              • I've read that one of the inspirations for Destiny was the LOST series. If this is true than the Glimmer has to be the frakking smoke monster that was never explained. Perhaps now us LOST fans can find some closure!

                  • Very well thought-out analysis of this topic. I agree with you on all points. One of the first thoughts I had after watching Bungie at GDC 13 was "why did they not explain the 5th species on their list of enemy species?" (the same picture you used at start of OP) Thank you for writing this, you did very well!

                      • #4 seems to be a kind of Fallen but it seems to fall under the grunt fallen type witch of course would be the easiest for the glimmer to have access to for domination and conquest
