So uh I used to be interested in rock back then but once i heard Kody blu 31 by JID I had realized some rappers can have touching lyrics or talk about reality more than rock so I had switched to -blam!- 2024 and I’m not changing genres anytime sooon so what’s your story

Build our machine, by DAGames. Changed my taste from Christian rock to nerdcore and I've been loving it all this time

Never really switched music tastes, just expanded. Let's see... Power by Kanye West got me into Hip Hop Aqualung by Jethro Tull got me into classic prog No Kinda Dancer by Robert Earl Keene got me into old country/folk The entire MGR:R soundtrack got me into that sort of hard rock/metal sweet spot they're in Take Me Back to Eden by Sleep Token got me into Death Metal And, last but not least... Symphony No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 65: III. Allegro Non Tropo got me into classical.

Ngl, anime openenings leading to me listening to Jrock/pop more than other genres. (Not too much of a switch, but more of change in focus) I often try to understand the lyrics of songs I’m listening to, and most songs I hear on the radio are a little, meh in the lyrics/story department. Usually just “love” stuff. (I didn’t listen to many radio channels. It’s just during drives.) So foreign music helps prevent me from understanding any lyrics (unless Engrish… then it hurts a bit.) so I can actually focus on and hopefully enjoy the music itself. And I listen to Japanese mostly cause it sounds better (more flowy/soft) compared to Korean imo. Basically another instrument in the song. Sometimes they slip in an English word and I don’t catch it until I look up lyrics. Then it’s like a 40/60 on if it works with the song.
Going by song that started that all.. idk. Evangelion was the first anime I watched, but the songs are mostly English, save the OP which is iconic but I wouldn’t listen to it a lot. Probably some popular shonen anime from when I watched those. LiSA, ASCA, and Myth & Roid are pretty good bands/artists. But songs that made me look for non-anime songs? Probably that popular song by Yoasobi or Rightfully by Mili, (which isn’t Japanese but Mili is still great) which eventually changed up my YouTube feed and led me to things like Plastic Love (great song for homework or stuff) and other City Pop hits.
A都市の秋 By Lamp is a vibe. Dunno what’s with the cover, but song slaps. Can’t believe I almost lived life never hearing it. Kyomen no Nami by YURiKA is also great, probably the best and most impressive opening I’ve heard. Someone did a pretty good English cover of it too.

Switch? I dunno. I was only exposed to gospel as a child, but it wasn't "my" music. I heard pop music and disco through my elementary years and didn't really get exposed to real rock until 7th or 8th grade. I can't think of a specific song that tripped the switch for me, but it was what I have listened to as my primary genre ever since.

The Witness (Strapped)
Enacting the Final Shape with my Glock. - old
Knife Talk by Drake feat. 21 Savage & Project Pat Yeah, I definitely used to not be a big fan of rap, mainly listening to rock, but when I heard that one, I must say it was a game changer and it really helped me get into rap. So, that’s my exotic catalyst. -
I used to hate any type of metal that wasn’t super shreddy and flashy and would listen to almost exclusively bands like Judas Priest, and then I heard Custer by Slipknot, which introduced me to low guitars. And then I discovered A7X, which then led me down the rabbit hole of metalcore, then eventually I’ve come to where I am now with Djent and Prog Deathcore.

For a while, I never really had a favorite genre. but I started listening to through the fire and flames by DragonForce and that's what kick started my love for metal music DragonForce is my absolute favorite band right now and the only artist who's music I listen to by listening to their albums instead of just random, individual songs by a artist

Do people only listen to one genre at a time? At te most, I’ve seen songs that opened me up to new genres, but I’ve never “switched” music genres. I just have one big honking playlist with basically every song I’ve ever liked since I first got my phone. Specific songs occasionally fall out of favor, but never whole genres.

Imagine only liking one genre. Couldn't be me.

I used to be super into Punk but I'm more into Indie at this point. The biggest influence of mine in that direction is probably Elliott Smith and Neutral Milk Hotel.

I've always been a rock fan at heart, but between my upbringing and friends over the years giving me a very broad variety I've grown to have an appreciation for music in general, no matter the genre. A really good question, though.

Umm... I listen to all genres of music and think they all have something to provide to the music industry. -
I used to be in a rap sinkhole, but after listening to boygenius on a whim, I have tried expanding my musical tastes

I had an ai write me a song about how brave it is to rip -blam!- in public

Edited by Cultmeister: 8/4/2024 12:51:40 PMCan I Kick It by A Tribe Called Quest. Never used to be into rap/hip-hop but that song was used on an advert when I was little so it got stuck in my head for years and years afterwards. Rediscovered it when I was an adult and suddenly I’m into the genre now. I would take issue with your word ‘switch’ though. My music taste is only ever added to, not switched or changed. I still listen to some albums i heard when i was a teen and they hit just as hard despite my general taste broadening quite a bit.

Edited by Agent Vulpes: 8/4/2024 12:49:18 PMI’ve always been that “I listen to a lot of different music,” guy, but rock always (honestly) scared me. I was under the impression all rock was screamo and very heavy, although I did listen to Skillet at the time (and still do) but I guess I didn’t count that in the same category. And the I heard the song Rescue Me (feat. A Day to Remember) by Marshmello and was curious about A Day to Remember after having the song in my playlist for a while. That’s when I discovered Hard Rock. If I had to choose a favorite genre, it would be hard rock. Especially anything from the early 2000s, the sound is just what I love. Linkin Park, A Day to Remember, random songs I found and loved, hard rock is just awesome. Speaking of Skillet, I was just not looking at the band’s About page on Apple Music and apparently John Cooper (the lead singer) plays a bass, the more you know.
