I've actually just started to somewhat get into playing trials and if it turns into SBMM that would be it for me.
SBMM is in comp and look at how a ton of players play comp. They run at the other team until the matchmaking plinkos them to the next rank. They do this because with SBMM the game decides so much of what's going on that it doesn't really matter what a lot of players do.
It's just not real. You don't even really want it.
Some people are gonna be like "Well what if I want to play with a friend who's not as good in trials?" This is where averaging comes in. Your score and your friends scores will be added then divided to put you in a lobby that averages out to a comparable team skill level.
Why do people think that matchmaking should work in such a way that they should be telling it what type of players they will find acceptable to play on their way to reaching literally the pinnacle PvP achievement of the game?
I'd rather play with people who are at my skill
In a real PvP where other real people are playing too the game can't always be concerned with you and who you would "rather play."
I'm sorry I'm not trying to annoy you but the things people think they are supposed to be able to ask for at the expense of others in this game are just mind boggling. Just zero consideration for what getting what you want will do to other people.
Its a mode where people are competing. It can't be stopped to ask you who you would "rather play." Does it work right and provide a high quality experience and is it trying to be as fair as possible given the various circumstances surrounding the mode is all anyone should really be asking for.

Comp is not Sbmm. It's rank based. Completely different.
-
Comp is sbmm and has been since shadowkeep dropped

Isn't it some kind of a mish mash of both? I know for me winning the 4 in a row at brave to get my title guilt was harder than the trials matches I played this week.

While in a match your performance will accelerate you towards the rank you "deserve" as interpreted by the algorithm, but once at the rank you perform at rank based makes it extremely difficult to move higher because you are playing against similarly ranked people who are likely just passing through your rank while moving to Legend. Imo, Bungie has it extremely backwards. Comp was designed to work with cbmm best. QP was designed to work with sbmm best. You can tell because the best weapons in Y2 were all attached to Comp. That means you had to earn them through skill. Sbmm doesn't work well in creating a skill gap and a skill gap is necessary if you want people to have to "earn" great weapons. Or you can just require a severe grind for those weapons so that hard work determines who gets them... like Redrick's Broadsword.

Edited by A_mo: 2/21/2021 8:57:00 PMThe way they hand out weapons is never going to be perfect with this game when it comes to PvP. Just remembering LH/NF, yeah it was cool if you were one of the people who got them early, but it just created too much tension between those who had them and those who didn't. SBMM should definitely not be in QP if for no other reason than that there are 12 players in a lobby. With that most of the time like 5 people aren't even really playing. They are just watching with no shot registration/terrible movement responsiveness. I understand the rank based aspect of comp but if you, for instance look at destiny tracker which somewhat correlates (although not perfectly, and by no means for all players) with whatever skill rating people have in game you can see that for some people you play your first match, you get ranked at diamond for that and then you are playing mostly diamond players for the rest of the time. Yes you are accelerated to whatever rank but that whole time because of the skill based aspect you are just taking turns winning with people who are similarly skilled to you so as not to have you or them playing too many people who are lower skilled. Or higher skilled for some. All of this is fine btw. Just as long as they keep it to that mode. As far as earning weapons through skill in y2. A lot of people didn't do that. And you know how they got the weapons and how they got them is probably why we won't be seeing a return to the more hardcore climbing to the top aspect of weapon handling in comp.

Edited by ThisIsDodgy: 2/21/2021 2:56:43 PMNot to be a d!ck but did you just say I'm being selfish for giving legitimate reasons why trials should have sbmm because and I quote.
I've actually just started to somewhat get into playing trials and if it turns into SBMM that would be it for me.
You realize you literally delegitimized your argument by saying this right? My argument states that it'd be better for the community your argument is 'I don't like it thus it's bad.'
Why do people think that matchmaking should work in such a way that they should be telling it what type of players they will find acceptable to play on their way to reaching literally the pinnacle PvP achievement of the game?
Sbmm isn't about who I want to play against it's about who is at a similar skill level making the games closer and individual efforts being valued more. (sbmm is already kind of done by the community when using things like d2 lfg discord and fireteam finder by saying things such as have a 1.2+ kd and 3 times flawless) Yet you don't want it to naturally happen in the game because that means you actually have to try harder because you'll be matched at your skill level. You see how that makes no sense right?

Edited by A_mo: 2/21/2021 3:25:21 PMNo because the way I want for it to work is its not all about me. I can lose at trials for the rest of the season without desiring tailormade matchmaking. Plus I can just not play trials at all because I suck at elimination modes. The difference is that I can just not play it if its not for me instead of screwing it up for everyone else who likes it, which is what SBMM does to playlists. It literally screws the people who like the playlist the most, over the most, in most scenarios. There is nothing at all natural about SBMM. You should read some about it and make sure you pay attention to some of the things that some of the people who first promoted it said it was supposed to be able to do. Things that have nothing to do with fair competition and things that imho no human being has any business thinking themselves smart enough to be doing to other human beings, I don't care how much smarter than me they are. Its not just about creating fair matches by finding people of similar skill. Not even close. That shit is evil and you should read about it. Probably okay for comp though. And I was surprised they removed it from rumble, but then again it really is just that bad. And with Trials it just can't be where some people get to go flawless basically by playing against their skill or lower the whole time. People can make arguments for the other modes (I guess) but it was always stated that flawless was something for people who proved themselves. You do not prove yourself by the game finding you 3 other yous to play all the way to the top. Of course it should try to find the best matches skill and especially connection wise in terms of card wins but other than that, its supposed to be challenging. Oh, I forgot. I wasn't trying to say you yourself are a selfish person. SBMM just creates a selfish climate that has nothing to do with teamwork or fair competition or getting better through practice and self-improvement. Its a mindset we all suffer from because of that kind of matchmaking. And its something you can see played out all over the internet and in the way people play the game to this day.
