Page 90
this page might maybe come as a surprise
Sunlight shines into the hunter's eyes and glints off of black armor. Golden eyes take in the beauty of the Dreaming City for the last time. And she finds herself approaching the last person she would have thought to.      Though her back is turned to the silent hunter, Petra speaks to her. "After your traveler woke... my dreams became darker. Brighter lights... deeper shadows."      Petra turns to face her with a nod of acknowledgement. "Shadow."      She comes to a stop only when she is standing shoulder to shoulder with the Queen's Wrath.      Together, they gaze into the misty distance of the Dreaming City.      A long moment of silence drags out between them.      "How are you holding up?" Petra asks softly.      "Decent enough." Shadow doesn't bother to ask how Petra is. She already knows. "I won't be coming back."      The sudden statement causes Petra to glance at her. "I'm not surprised. I know you've been going ...elsewhere."      Shadow avoids the topic. "I helped as best I could. I wish I could do more."      Silence. An inward sigh.      "You so easily fell into your place." Shadow mutters suddenly, thoughtfully. "I envy that." Her voice is quiet. Wind whispers through crow-black hair, tossing it into her eyes.      "It hasn't been so easy." Petra sounds weary, confused by the hunter's unusually civil nature. "I almost became a techeun, you know."      Shadow finds the information faintly surprising.      "Maybe everything would have been different if I had chosen that path."      Shadow sighs. "We both chose our paths."      "We did."      Another awkward pause.      "I don't suppose you'll be telling me or anyone else where you're going?"      Shadow meets her gaze. "No."      Eyes of ice and fire lock together.      Petra raises her chin and ever so slightly narrows that eye. "I have a feeling I know where you've been going. And I would be lying if I said I won't be sending someone to find your whereabouts."      "I'd expect nothing less of you." Shadow almost smiles. Almost. "Don't expect to find me." She turns fully to face Petra.      Petra hums, hands on her hips. "You have heart. Whatever you're doing must be important."      There is a challenge in both their gazes— as well as a mutual respect, however hidden away it may be in the hunter.      "I wish you the best of luck here."      "And you, in your... endeavors. We may not be friends, but I respect you, guardian."      "Oh, I'm not a guardian anymore." Shadow turns away. "But I will always be awoken."      "I expect I'll see you again, one day," Petra calls out, turning to watch her go.      Shadow looks back, nods once.      Petra returns to her post, tossing her last words over her shoulder. "Let's just hope it's not on opposite sides of a war."
