Artifacts shouldn't be retired each season

One of the coolest additions to D1 was the artifact slot. It radically changed your playstyle, depending on your class, how you fought, and the like. From giving up your Super, for more ability charges, to something simple like no sprint cooldown, these things were a welcome addition. And, always around. I feel like, despite a few oversights, like the increasing costs and discouragement to experiment, the artifact's reintroduction, to the series, was pretty cool. But I don't want it to go away. Nothing in the artifact's list of perks really pertain to the rental activities offered this season, so keeping it around would be no big deal, I feel. Simply release a new artifact, and allow me to choose between them. Maybe where the Gate Lord's Eye was so Void-centric, with a little Arc on the side, release another one that is Solar/Arc-centric, with a little Void/Solar on the side. But, when we go into the Season of the Dawn, unlock all perks for the last season's artifact. I'd like to have opportunities to try the new with the old. If an exotic comes out next season that would've worked great with the Eye, I'll be pretty bummed that its not there to equip. Just keep it around, and let me swap between the Gate Lord's Eye, and the SotD Captain's Tubes, or whatever, to allow me to be more Void-centric in my builds, or lean more towards a different element, depending on the activity and, more importantly, my mood. I get you guys want to get rid of this and that, make it more unique and memorable, or some odd reasoning, but I feel like these would be more memorable if they stayed in my inventory. Maybe I get a friend into D2 two, three seasons from now, they only got one artifact, and I can show off my Gate Lord's Eye and Captain's Tubes, in action, as opposed to, well... not. It'd feel almost like a trophy, of sorts, a "I was there" type thing, you guys are trying to impress upon the community.

  • The whole point of the Artifact system is to test out potential new perks for armor or subclasses while putting a system in place to retire them if they are too OP. Keeping them around permanently would not fit that view, and if we have to deal with a Crucible filled with Thunder Coil and Arc Battery any longer, the world will explode

    • I don't think their servers could handle keeping all the artifact abilities. I mean slotting mods make the game crash as it is now. 😂

    • I don't mind if they reset the artifact each season, but please get rid of the crap champions mechanic and mods that can only fit certain weapons. It's totally restrictive on play style and makes the games endgame content boring as there isn't even variation in loadout that you can experiment with. Give us the grind to add power, give us a set of rewards like this season, only make them worth the effort to get. (lots were useless in this season) Make the mods add to a specialty type build but not one that forces us to use it if we don't want. I like the idea of faster grenade recharge by using super energy and other similar stuff.

      • That’s too much work for them. They will have to outsource more programmers because their permanent staff only have the ability to nerf the sandbox

        • They should make seasonal artifacts permanent and just make it so that you have to level up the new artifact to get the benefit of the power level with the artifact mods but If you still want your absolute maximum power you should be able to switch back because there's absolutely no way I'm regrinding all of that. But we have to compromise somewhere.

          • I has to. The point is that there are mods in the artifact that are OP by design (arc battery). If everyone knows ahead of time that those items have a shelf-life then they can be tolerated. The forums would be on fire with one-eyed-mask level hate if the artifact mods were permanent. It's actually a smart way to allow OP abilities in the game without them being a huge hindrance on the sandbox down the road.

            • Sometimes I forget about the no sprint cooldown thing. In Vanilla D1, there was no sprint cooldown. At some point during development, Bungie implemented sprint cooldown and didn't explain why. People thought it was a bug and asked Bungie to fix it. They didn't. Then RoI hit and they put in an artifact that removed the sprint cooldown entirely but did nothing else. You had to equip this piece of gear to fix a problem Bungie created. Then, at some point, they nerfed the artifact and re-implememted a shorter sprint cooldown between certain actions and didn't tell anyone. Just Bungie being Bungie.

            • Yes, the artifact is the quintessential of Bungie’s shifting metas as a means to create content. Season 8: increased void grenades dmg Season 9: increased solar grenades dmg. Here guys I have the content for the next season. Now you can go home peacefully.

              • Don't be silly. That would let us play more like how we want to. Restricting to a single artifact that's tuned to only a limited weapon set allows Bungie to try and direct us to play how they want us to. Bungie wants us to choose how we play, so long as it aligns with how they want us to play.

                • Oh man my favorite thing about this current season's artifact is arc battery. As a warlock main, I like knowing that hunters can dodge and become invulnerable while using wormhusk to fix their mistakes on a 25 second cooldown, while I have a 90 second cooldown rift.

                • They already have enough trouble loading all the current mods into the UI, I can only imagine what this would do to their systems. It’s a nice idea though. Maybe in another, better version of Destiny.

                • They can take it away when I can actually pull anything from the Collections and it'll current year. All of that Year 1 collections is just taking up game space. Bring that up to current year and maybe collection wouldn't be so damn useless.

                • I don't think you understand why it resets. It's basically a way for Bungie to cut off a large chunk of testing. Oh, something's broken, well it will be gone next season anyway so deal with it until then ... It's basically a way to do less work.

                • They shouldn’t do this because it’s meant to be a SEASON artefact, that’s the whole point of it and that you are meant to play during its own season to level it up and earn new powers as the season goes on

                  • Or they could just make artifacts like they were in d1. The new system is just another example of them fixing what was never broken. The old system was both more rewarding and more balanced.

                  • you realise the artifact is essentially a testing tool for Bungie and we are literally "live testing" for them. Watch this space to see Arc Battery become perk of some random exotic in the future. The artifact mode allows Bungie to see what works and what doesn't work - something too powerful...yup don't need to nerf it, its going away at the end of the season when it can be "retuned" to make it seem something else.

                    • Agree. For most players getting an artifact leveled requires a lot of play time. Too much to do every single season.

                      • I'm pretty close to a +26 on mine... requires 2,700,000 xp to got to +26 from +25. Cant image 20,000,000+ xp just getting reset back to 0 but if the rank rewards start over I guess it would be okay.

                        Some builds are just way too fun to give them up. Artifact power can go to zero, but the mods should stay.
