(Fanfic) Legend Untold, Ch23 Pt2 “The Maze”

Again, an apology. This will take several posts to fit the whole chapter, and I don’t mean to spam posts in the forum. Chapter 23, The Maze Part 2 As we reached and everyone began filing into shelter with Hunter, I looked to the right again. It felt like my blood froze in my veins at that moment. A few meters away, in the middle of the path, a Hive Knight watched us. But it wasn’t a Knight. The shape matched, but it had only a single white eye, and its flesh and bone were a pitch black that somehow emitted a soft glow. Its head twitched violently just once. I glanced back to the others for a split second, but when my eyes returned to where the creature stood, it was gone. Confused and wary, I did a slow spin with my gun raised, but the strange Knight was nowhere to be seen. No one noticed my tardiness as I climbed into a shallow shelter between the stones with the others; they were all focused on what lay ahead of us. The path really only went one direction from here, but it split and wound around slanted boulders. Nothing told us if this was the right way. Deciding to hold my tongue about what I had seen, I listened. “-should climb up on the rocks so that we can see everything and won’t get surprised walking around any corners,” Warlock was advising. There was a pause for a moment as everyone thought about what she said and looked out to plot a path, and in that silence, I heard a soft beep, like that of beacon. “C’mon,” Sierra urged, and Hunter began to step out to lead. The beep sounded again. “Wait!” I whispered warningly, catching Hunter by the cloak to keep him from walking out. I pulled him back behind the rocks just in time to avoid the source of the beeping. A single Vex glided past us through the air, its beeping sensors joined only by a low clicking hum that could only be heard once it was right next to us. It had the form of a Harpie, but its eye and the outer edges of its plating and tendrils glowed with strange white light. Moving slowly, the Gorgon’s eye swept the path ahead of itself with focused devotion, not even bothering to search the shelter we were in. After several agonizing seconds, it passed from view, its strange sounds growing fainter as it continued on its way. Curiously, I looked out after it. “Well,” Hunter sighed, “That was-“ My hand shot up in front of his face in a silencing motion, keeping him from finishing his sentence. The Gorgon had stopped as soon as he started speaking. Not daring to move, I watched the Vex hover in the air, still as death. Drew began to shift up for a look, but I held my other hand up to halt him. An eternity passed before the Gorgon finally moved again, floating down the path. Dropping my arms as soon as it was out of sight and hearing, I sighed in relief, but did not relax. “What just happened?” John questioned. “It heard us,” I whispered. “Never grab my cape or hush me again,” Hunter ordered sternly. “Noted,” I responded, not sure if I would be able to keep that promise, “Let’s go before another one comes.” Straightening his hood grumpily, Hunter led the way forward across the path and up the slanted face of a jagged boulder. At the pointed tip of stone, we looked down upon four winding splits in the path, all leading the same general direction through the narrowing cavern. Another boulder lay a short way ahead of us, within jumping distance. Guardian and Hunter braced to make the leap, but froze when another Gorgon came around the path below us. It must’ve taken a solid minute for the slow patrol to move out of sight, but no one dared budge an inch. When it was finally gone, Guardian hopped down and watched the path while the rest of us followed and scurried up the next rocky incline. The tip of this one came close to that of another, making it a very short jump, but the ceiling came lower here so we would have to be careful not to mess up at the risk of falling hard. I glanced back to the base of our perch and took a sharp intake of breath when I saw the Gorgon had come back around. All it had to do was look to the side. “Traveler above,” Warlock muttered, and I turned as quietly as possible to see that a Gorgon was coming from either direction on the path below us. A couple of them started trying to shift backwards to get out of sight. “No no no!” I whispered with as much urgency as I could, “One’s behind us.” “We need to move,” Hunter declared quietly, then cloaked himself and dove for the next boulder. Halfway across, he used his Light to propel himself in a second jump, landing on the stone and slipping into a nook between the ceiling and boulder. As soon as the hiss of air moving under Hunter’s feet broke the air, both of the Gorgons underneath him snapped their gazes up, probably only missing him because he was invisible. And the only reason they missed us was because they were looking towards the other boulder. Panicked, I glanced behind us, but was thankful to see that the other Gorgon hadn’t been close enough to hear and was continuing on unawares. After a minute, the Gorgons lost interest, but they began following paths that didn’t lead very far away from our position. They came back around under us once more, and when they were once again at the furthest edges of our view of the cavern, we made our move. Everyone jumped in quick, single file to join Hunter and spread over the top of the boulder he was on. Confident that we hadn’t been heard after looking back for a moment, I concentrated on the path ahead. This was the last large mound of stone before the cavern grew so low and narrow that it was more of a small cave. The slanted bottom of the boulder let out into a single path broken only by a few large rocks and Vex-made columns. A few lights were placed around, illuminating some structures built into the rocky walls. Then I saw it: one of the white lights was placed in a small side tunnel that was hardly more than a crevice in the wall that ended after only a few meters, but I could see a gap in the stone and metal that one could crawl through. There were a few plants around it, and it seemed to slant downwards. Normally I would’ve assumed it was placed as a clever trick or would have started weighing risks, but in front of the tiny gap in the wall stood a Guardian. It was me. With gun raised, the other me seemed to be watching for Gorgons, although it was clear that his opponents were spaced differently because I could see a Gorgon almost right in front of him. Apparently satisfied that his presence wasn’t known to the Vex, the other William began backing up to the sliver in the wall. As he reached it, my double paused for a moment, and I realized he was staring straight at me. Before I could figure out what to do, he ducked out of sight. “There,” I pointed the tunnel out to the others, “That’s it.” I knew I was being a hypocrite for not telling anyone about the things I was seeing, but all they had done so far was help. “What makes you say that?” Guardian’s Ghost asked. “You have a better choice?” Warlock seemed annoyed with the Ghost’s worrying. “We’ve learned to just go with what he says,” John told the other fireteam, “He’s usually right.” “That’s not a good reason to-“ I began to protest. “Are you really gonna argue against your own decision?” Sierra turned her helmet on me, probably rolling her eyes underneath. “Yes,” I answered firmly. Discussing options and being cautious was always a good idea. “Bruh,” Drew facepalmed, “Just…just don’t.” “Anyone not want to go through the creepy mouse hole?” Rush asked rhetorically. “I don’t think Sally does,” Drew reported. “It’s okay, I never want to go anywhere…” Sally spoke for herself. “Why can’t my Ghost be cute?” Hunter mumbled. “Hey!” his Ghost protested. “Let’s just get this done,” Warlock rallied, “For Sally.” “For Sally!” every single one of us aside from Sally and Guardian echoed in a whisper, some of us pumping our fists up in the cheer.
