What planet are you living on? Forsaken was the highest selling digital-version video game for the month of September. Registered player numbers are the highest they've ever been (12 million accounts). Engagement numbers are the highest they've ever been this long after a major release (1.8 million PVE players, 790k PVP players daily as of last week). The game's first seasonal event was very well-received (When was the last time you heard "Festival of the Cost"?) ...and Activision (Blizzard) has their own problems right now. Diablo Immortal (mobile version of Diablo) had a disastrous announcement at Blizzcon....and investors over-reacted and their stock dropped sharply. Activision may have 99 problems but Bungie isn't one of them.

Once again you do what the BDF always does, distorting the truth. Not long ago the numbers you are talking about were some of the lowest EVER! The reason this game was given out already TWICE for free on digital stores! The number of players currently playing increased exactly right AFTER it was given out for free the second time! Trust me, i know, as i followed these numbers often. So please, don't spread wrong facts. Also, i guess we all would be better believing Activi, rather than a forum BDF member's personal accusations.

  • What part of "biggest brand management catastrophe in 30 years" was unclear to you...and how in (any rational universe) is that seen as a "defense" of Bungie?? Forsaken needed to be as good as it was to SAVE THE FRANCHISE FROM GOING UNDER. Activision's expectations that vanilla Destiny 2 could be as bad as it was, and the player base would not only forgive-and-forget.....but then GROW the player base without having to be aggressively marketed was laughably unreasonable.

  • According to Jason Schrierer(probably misspelled his last name), it's not as good as they hoped...guess Activision really only cares about maximizing profits at any cost like people say...seems super greedy to have such a great selling franchise and be disappointed in it

  • lol try the EXACT opposite Activision admitted that Forsaken sales underperformed relative to prior sales in the series AND they admitted that player engagement has gone down in Forsaken nice try buddy, but no nobody seems to like the increased RNG, grindiness, and lower drop rates of Forsaken. Except for a hardcore minority that doesn't seem to bring enough money to make a difference.

  • https://destinytracker.com/ Someone's got their numbers wrong. Destiny tracker gets their numbers directly from Bungie with respect to player engagement. As far as sales go, sales get evaluated according to PROJECTIONS....not whether or not those expectations were reasonable. ...and expecting Destiny to just roll on and continue to grow as if nothing happened last year was almost childishly unreasonable. Vanilla Destiny 2 was one of the most catastrophically misguided efforts to RE-BRAND a product in the last 30 years. The last effort to re-brand a product that went this badly...and forced a major corporation to backpedal and roll-back the product changes in their entirety...... ....and "New Coke" back in 1985. The consquences of that catastrophic mismanagement were not reflected in last years numbers. They were goin to be reflected in THIS YEARS numbers... ...and expecting Bungie and Forsaken to do anything other than what they did-----To right a sinking ship of a franchise, and re-establish the player base----is unreasonable to the point of absurdity. Like I said below, it was NO coincidence that Eric Hirshberg left as Activision CEO last year. He was getting out of town before the consequences of some of what were almost certainly bad decisions on his part, came home to roost. Well, now they're home.....and in typical corporate fashion these days.....the man responsible took off before they arrived.

You talk bullcrap dude. It seems you forget all those that got the game for free and haven't paid anything! Although i know you didn't forgot it, but as a BDF lemming just ignoring this bothersome little truth! Dude, Activi is a far better source for what's going on, than you, a forum BDF member. So please, stop spreading fake facts and distorting the truth. Activi doesn't say something like that for fun. Should be obvious to every moron on the planet.

I want to remind you that you know crap and that you NEVER EVER EVER did ANYTHING for the better of the game! While many people, me included, were fighting for the better of the game, fighting EV, fighting for more and meaningful content, all you did was brownnosing and defend Bungie whereever you could! So, again, you know crap! All you know is what you see through your pink BDF glasses, so don't act like you the s***, as i lmao when reading your crap! Don't forget to thank us for the game that you enjoy today! As if it would have been for you, it would still be low a** crap! Just a reminder and hope you never forget again. Big bro's watching^^

  • Facts and statistics without their proper context are meaningless. ...and expecting that there would be no consequences to the Destiny franchise as a result of one of the most catastrophic efforts at re-branding a successful product in American business history.....was just absurd on Activision's part.

  • Kelly, I almost always agree with you, but the evidence is against you this time. Activision says D2 is a disappointment. Sure, Forsaken sold well in September (and it's fantastic!). But it's not drawing in the broken fandom as much as Activision expected. We don't really know what Activision means by this. Does it mean that it's a failure? Maybe. Does it just mean it made money, but not as much as expected? Could be. All we know is that Activision is disappointed, and it's reflected on their earnings call. It's going to take time to put the fandom back together. Bungie's response to the worst sequel ever made was way too slow and way too insulting. It took them a year to fix that boring dumpster fire of a game. It might take more than a year for the fans to trust the companies that made that dung ball and laughed at us for not liking it.

  •
But it's not drawing in the broken fandom as much as Activision expected.
...and that expectation was not realistic. All that being a "disappointment" means is that the Forsaken failed to meet Activision's expectations. It says nothing about whether or not those expectations were reasonable under the circumstances. Considering that vanilla D2 was a failed re-branding of the game that violated a major trust that the consumers of the game had given Bungie...expecting to aggressively GROW the game with this DLC was unreasonable. It may grow OVER TIME, as that trust is rebuilt. But to expect the consumer base to just say "Hey lets just let bygones be bygones" was never goin to happen.
We don't really know what Activision means by this.
Oh yeah we do. You just have to be able to parse the corporate-speak, and understand how publicly-owned companies are run. They are slaves to "Wall Street Expectations". Which in this case means a certain projected growth in the sales, profits, and the value of the company....which then gets reflected in the value of Activision stock. Activision was clearly expecting Forsaken to be a certain part of that growth....but the reality is that the decisions that were made in handling the game last year DAMAGED the brand. That damage was not reflected LAST YEARS sales numbers. THEY ARE BEING REFLECTED NOW...and Activision was being unrealistic in not expecting that there would be consequences for last year's mismanagement. Like I said....it was NO coincidence that the CEO who was likely behind a good deal of that mismanagement choose last year to step down...and get out before the "bill" came due.
Bungie's response to the worst sequel ever made was way too slow and way too insulting. It took them a year to fix that boring dumpster fire of a game.
No. The response was the only response POSSIBLE. Destiny 2 was a nearly CATASTROPHIC esample of brand mismanagement. Destiny 2 was almost certainly a failed attempt to RE-BRAND the Destinty franchise into a game that Activision could turn into an e-sport....and that would allow Activision to "double-dip" in terms of generating revenue for both home sales....and e-sports. Activision owns Major League Gaming....and EVERY Activision Blizzard property that has PVP has an e-sports presence. So I'd be SHOCKED if Destiny 2 wasn't an effort to leverage interest in the Crucible....and the popularity of Trials on Twitch....into a game that could become an e-sport. The only problem is that the community REJECTED this because the majority of the player base are RPG gamers who play this game as a loot-based RPG....and not shooter gamers looking for the next Halo or Overwatch. So all the change that were made to Destiny 2 that were tying to make it "e-sport friendly" (fixed rolls, bland basic weapons, badly nerfed abilities, 4v4 PVP) only succeeded in BREAKING the game for how the majority of the player base saw the game....and wanted to play it. So they had to be rolled back, and the game basically REDESIGNED....while people were still PLAYING IT every day. The software equivalent of trying to fix a house built on a cracked and uneven foundation. By LIFTING THE HOUSE UP OFF of that foundation......POURING A NEW ONE.......and laying the house back down on the new foundation..... ...while people are still LIVING in the house. No small feat...and not something that can be done quickly or easily.

  •
The software equivalent of trying to fix a house built on a cracked and uneven foundation.
I know people keep saying this, but repetition doesn't make it true. Some fixes could easily have been present in Osiris. But at that time, Bungie was still laughing at us and telling us what idiots we were for not liking the worst sequel in the history of electronic media. If Bungie had been proactive instead of slowly reactive, Warmind could have been the change that was needed. The reality is, Bungie wanted to sell more copies of Forsaken. They waited for Forsaken to implement the needed changes TO SELL COPIES OF FORSAKEN. Not because it was so difficult to put those changes in the game. It was a money decision. They thought it would drum up interest in their most expensive DLC and help them recoup some of the money they lost on Osiris and Warmind. This failure to act cost them the fanbase. Had they acted, the worst sequel ever made would have only been bad for 3 months, until Osiris came out. Some silly fans keep defending them with the "But, it's really hard to program" argument. But that's not the truth. Money is always the reason something gets done or doesn't. ALWAYS.
