Why do all shooters have terribly boring, flat, similar maps nowadays?

Basically all FPS pvp shooters I’ve played as of late have maps that are all somewhat symmetrical, pretty flat, 3 lane, and no vehicles or interesting interactions. I mean I just got black ops 4 thinking it may be a nice relaxing game to just mindlessly shoot stuff and I realized the maps are all pretty similar. They may look different but for the most part they play pretty similarly. Sure there’s like 1 or 2 that feel unique but otherwise I feel like I’m just playing the same map over and over. This got me thinking and even halo 5 (favorite new gen shooter) has pretty boring maps. Not so much symmetrical (though there is a lot of that) but nothing that made halo maps feel like halo maps. I mean Ascension the halo 2 map is a good example. Kind of symmetrical but not, banshee and rockets to control. Big lift. Zanzibar is another that comes to mind. Now you look at halo 5 and all the maps play basically like a Sanctuary. No vehicles, relatively flat, nothing cool or u inquest about the maps. — I mean part of this could just be nostalgia but I do feel like all pvp fps games are trending toward this ‘competitive’ no bullshit, ‘fair’ maps which are great and everything- it’s just they all feel very similar and I’m getting bored of games faster and faster because of it. Even in halo 3 games felt very different on Standoff, compared to construct, compared to guardian even tho these maps are relatively symmetrical. I mean idk what my point is... maybe I’m just bored of fps games after too many years or the style of game is changing fundamentally, you tell me

  • That is actually one of the things i really liked about titanfall, due to the focus on lateral movement, the maps felt like they were more so built to be three dimensions instead of 2. It made even the at times smaller maps feel bigger and feel like they had a lot more options available for routes to take.

  • Seems like they’re all going backwards in PVP. You would think large gaming companies would ignore the media and keep fine tuning their craft instead of kicking out refurbished junk. Destiny and COD are winners by default giving them a false sense of security. One strong shooter will wipe them both out. You can only sell hype so many times: What are your Forsaken sales numbers Bungie?

    • You've never played Titanfall 2 then. Best looking/functional PvP maps ever. Destiny 2 maps look fantastic, but are a bit annoying when paired with a fairly high TTK.

      Halo 5's your favourite? I know there's pretty slim pickings when it comes to shooters these days, but Jesus Christ. About insipid map design, though? You've already come to the correct conclusion in your post.

      • Titanfall 2 had good maps and as well as halo. Destiny had good maps in my opinion.

        To be fair, CoD tried to emphasize vertical movement and creative tactics with wall-runs and boost jumps. And there were indeed MANY ways you could get around maps besides running through the usual lanes. But it got too much criticism and now we're back to boots on the ground.

            • Well 3 lanes tends to work and helps keep the combat fast-paced without making people feel bored. It's also easier to design maps better around this way. Take a 4 lane map when it's a 6v6 and matches can become boring or longer than needed. Two lanes would be hectic (that one Halo Ce map comes to mind). 3 lines is essentially perfect as it allows you to build around it better, it also won't be one big giant mess. Mind you im speaking entirely for myself, this is just my own opinion.

                  • It's because all the GOOD map designers from the old school Cod's/Battlefields/Halos etc. have all moved on and are making VR games now.

                  • Yeah maps like blood gulch and Valhalla are rare to find nowadays. Can't actually think of a PVP map I've actually liked since reach.

                  • People complain about people camping power spots or power weapons One good example would be snipers and rockets in the old halo games (haven’t played halo online since reach) Spawns can also be advantageous due to being able to get to certain spots faster too Certain maps also don’t have a good “flow” to them, respawn on the wrong node and you can take a while to be back in the action It also doesn’t help that most competitive games have multiple releases, it’s much easier to mirror a map instead of designing two balanced sides from scratch. We see that in many first titles there can be unique “unbalanced” maps that are really fun to play, the veterans know the lanes and how to play it, but the noob gets dominated So in short I would say it’s due to a more casual player base combined with overall laziness At least with my experience on console

                  • I agree. I’m really liking black ops 4 except for two things. One is how pretty much all the maps are exactly the same and are shit. And the fact if I’m sprinting, I ads and then stop ads I continue to sprint

                  • Maybe you need to try the more fantastical shooters. I don't really play the hyper realistic shooters like Battlefield or Call of Duty, and I haven't found that all maps found the same. Correlation doesn't mean causation, but it is worth investigating further.

                  • Because all shooters want to create pro league friendly maps and the pros want arenas instead of locations. Dramatically asymmetric maps mean that one spawn is better than the other and in pro matches that creates uneven playing field which can determine match outcomes. So luck plays into it a lot. Skill becomes less important. Not healthy for pro league. Rise of esports is a double edged sword.

                  • Destiny 2 doesn't seem to have this issue, ive looked and most maps have a gimmick to it that makes them stand out

                    • Halo has big team battle. Big maps, vehicles, 8 vs 8. Really can't get better. 4 vs 4 maps are too small and putting 4 vs 4 on the big map you'd never find anyone. Battlefield as massive maps with up to 64 players on a map. Aircraft, tanks, boats all included.
